Snow blankets the South Island resorts

New Zealand’s South Island snowfields have been blanketed in snow from a Southerly blast that started yesterday and still continues this afternoon in some areas.

The Remarkables, just up the road from Queenstown had to have the road cleared for access to the resort this morning, which was not an easy thing to do with wind drifts up to a metre in some places. Closer to Wanaka, Cardrona has reported 35-45cm up top creating a nice base cover that should ensure that lifts open on time on June 11.

Further north Mt Hutt received 15cm of fresh snow on top of the light cover they had from last week.

The remainder of this week looks like being cold with light scattered snow showers on and off through to the weekend. Cold temps will also mean that the snow guns will be able to get going.

It’s definitely looking like a good start for the Queenstown/Wanaka resorts.
