This weekend marks the ‘Official’ opening to season 2019, even though a few resorts are already up and running due to the best early snowfalls since 2000. We take a look at what lifts each resort are planning on running this weekend.

Perisher

Opened last Friday with skiing and boarding on Front Valley. The V8 chair and magic carpet have been running all this week with a terrain park for those who love the jumps. The grooming team have been out preparing more runs for this weekend and we will see skiing and boarding at all of the four resorts that make up Perisher (Perisher, Blue Cow, Guthega and Smiggin Holes). The Terminal and Summit Quad Chairs in Blue Cow as well as the Triple and Double Chairs in Mt Perisher will be spinning with more lifts to be announced shortly. Great news today with the opening of the brand new Leichhardt Chair.

Thredbo

Friday Flat will be opening on Saturday for beginners to have a slide. For the more advanced the Cruiser chair up top will be running accessing the Merritt’s area.

Falls Creek

This weekend will be the BIGGEST opening on record for Falls Creek! 7 lifts will be spinning this weekend:

• Halley’s Comet
• Eagle Express
• Towers
• Drovers
• Gully
• Mousetrap & Pete’s Train

– opening up terrain to suit all abilities and offering the perfect chance to shake off the cobwebs and get your ski or snowboard legs back into action!

Hotham

Hotham will be opening on Friday with the Audi Quattro Chair running from 8.30am. Hopefully after some snow next week and cold nights we can see more area opening very soon.

Mt Buller

The brand spanking new Bourke Street Express chair has been operating since last Friday. This weekend Fox, Skyline, Bourke Street Express, Bourke St carpet and Mercedes-Benz will all be spinning giving skiers and boarders plenty or terrain to explore. Bourke St will also include some small jumps and features.

Mt Baw Baw

Mt Baw Baw has more snow than it probably has had at the start of the season since I can remember, and I’ve been forecasting for over 20 years. There was already a nice base before around 40cm of big fat flakes dropped on Monday. Lifts open for this weekend to be advised.

Selwyn Snow Resort

Selwyn Snow Resort was the first to open last Thursday with the New Chum Chair spinning, and well as snow play and tobogganing.

Charlotte Pass

Charlotte Pass usually opens a couple of weeks after the official opening weekend but this year due to the excellent early snowfalls will be running the Kosi Triple Chair to the top accessing plenty of terrain.

MT BULLER OPENING NEW CHAIRLIFT ON 1 JUNE

What’s better than FREE skiing?  Being the first to get on the slopes this winter and riding a brand new chairlift!

Today Mt Buller announced the resort is opening early on Saturday 1 June to mark the first day of winter with free skiing and boarding on Bourke Street riding the new Bourke Street Express chairlift.

Mt Buller has been blanketed with over 35cms fresh snow so far this week and couldn’t wait until the Queen’s Birthday Weekend to roll the new 6-seater lift. 

Buller Ski Lifts’ owners Rino and Diana Grollo will officially open the Bourke Street Express at 10am on Saturday morning before inviting snowlovers to enjoy free rides for the day to celebrate the first day of the snow season – a week earlier than scheduled!

Buller Ski Lifts General Manager Laurie Blampied confirmed the exciting news this morning, “This $6m chairlift is a big investment and we are very pleased to get skiing on the first day of winter with a deep early snow cover and a brand new chairlift.”

This early opening of Mt Buller’s new 6-seater express lift is possible thanks to strong early snowfalls and a massive snowmaking effort from the resort, which has been busy making snow and preparing since April using two all-weather SnowFactories.

2019 marks the 70th year of lifted skiing at Mt Buller.  It started in 1949 with a single rope tow on the Bourke Street run.  Mt Buller is home to the most modern lift network in Australia with a system of 22 lifts and over 300 hectares of terrain.

Resort Management CEO Mark Bennetts confirmed Mt Buller and Mt Stirling will both officially open on 1 June, offering half price resort entry from Saturday until the Queen’s Birthday Weekend, which means less than $24 per vehicle when bought online in advance. Overnight parking will be free during this period. Shuttle services will operate from the car parks to the village from Saturday morning.

The Mt Buller Ski & Snowboard School will provide limited beginner ski and snowboard lessons from this Saturday and retail/rental stores at Mt Buller and in Mansfield will be open early for equipment hire. A number of hospitality venues in resort are open early and ready to serve meals and drinks. (Guide to: Choosing a snowboard for beginners)

Bourke Street ski run will remain open from Sunday 2 June at usual hours of 9am – 5pm.  Lift passes for Sunday onwards are available online from $66 for adults and $37 for children.

In celebration of Mt Buller’s inaugural Ikon Pass season, 19/20 Ikon Pass holders will enjoy bonus early access to Mt Buller for the 2019 season starting in June, along with regular access to the 2020 season. 

The Ikon Pass offers seven-day access to each destination per season, with no blackout dates, while the Ikon Base Pass offers five-day access to each destination per season, with no blackout dates at Mt Buller and some selected black-out dates at Thredbo. 

The Ikon Pass is available now at early discounted rates starting at $649 USD at www.ikonpass.com through Tuesday, 23 April 2019. 

To give Australians more time to take up the new Ikon Pass offer these early discounted rates will be extend through to the start of the southern ski season on Monday 10 June 2019 if bought through the following travel partners: Blue Powder, Mint Tours, Mogul Ski World, Scout, SkiMax Holidays, Ski Travel Company, Sno n Ski/MySnow Travel, Snowcapped Travel, and Travelplan in Australia, plus AMPED, The Ski Travel Specialists, and travel&co in New Zealand.
