Default 2017 skis tests and Colorado road trip.

My 20 year old son Daniel and myself have been to the USA snowsports industry trade show held at the Colorado convention centre in Denver, a great place for a shop buyer to see all the new skis and speak to the factory reps to explain what is new, we also wanted to spend the time looking at the skis specs and profiles before we headed to Copper mountain to ski on them.

We only had a chance to test about 40 skis, so making a list of what looked likely to be the winners while at the trade show was important, we also needed to test out the skis we have on order for the coming season, what was interesting to me was the skis that we tested were all good, but some were better than others, more on that in a later post.

A couple of brands that have made great skis in the past, but seemed to lose their way when tip rocker came out were Head and Fischer, I was quite pleased to see both Head and Fischer now have models with good tip rocker, so we were very keen to test those models out.

A few skis I had been selling based on other people reports were on my list, and I am glad I spent the time to try them for myself, I found most of them to be even better than I thought they were, an example of this was the Rossignol Experience 84, a really great ski for use in Australia and most likely overseas for most people.

As a Volkl dealer I was keen to try some of the new models that I hadn't been on before, skis like the Code Werks, this is a great ski, but is too expensive for most people to justify, so we don't stock them, but I certainly enjoyed skiing on them myself.

We both have the standard Volkl Code L skis with us here for days when there is no powder, the Code L is unchanged for this season.

One Volkl ski that really impressed me was the Volkl 90-eight, this ski appeared to do it all, fantastic edge hold, great in the chopped up powder, good in the moguls and when we found some, very good in the powder, I also really liked the wider version called the 100-eight, I think one of those two skis will be my next ski to use as a personal day to day ski for both Australia and overseas.

The RTM 81, RTM 84 and RTM86 were good as expected, I had already tried the new RTM 84 and RTM 86 during our winter, now I have tried the RTM 81 also, all 3 are great skis as expected from Volkl, the camber under the foot has improved what was an already great ski by giving it even better edge hold.

The RTM 86 is a fairly top end ski and I think it needs a reasonable level of skiing skill to get the best out of them, but if you have the ability, they are fantastic in all conditions.
The RTM 81 and RTM 84 are a much more forgiving ski that any level of skier would enjoy and not find them at all difficult to use, the difference we found was the RTM 84 was slightly better at the higher speeds, possibly due to the UVO device at the tip.

Saw you and Daniel in the latest SnowAction mag last night. Haven't had a chance to read your ski reviews as yet, will do tonight.

I have forgotten what I wrote now, I gave the info to the publisher while I was overseas and while it was still fresh in my mind, he is a pretty handy skier himself I noticed.

I didn't want to do too much of a report on here until after the Snowaction mag came out, but I will do more fairly soon on the other great skis we tested at Copper mountain.
