Post

Hi Guys,

Learning the rules slowly for AFL at work and have just been given a research question by one of the guys.

So can anyone tell me who the original 12 Victorian football clubs were?

Thanks!!!

no worries!! To further expand.....
* Carlton (still exist)
* Collingwood (still exist)
* Essendon (still exist)
* Geelong (still exist)
* Hawthorn (still exist)
* Fitzroy Lions (merged with Brisbane - now Brisbane Lions)
* Footscray Bulldogs (now the Western Bulldogs)
* Melbourne (still exist)
* North Melbourne (still exist)
* Richmond (still exist)
* South Melbourne (now the Sydney Swans)
* St Kilda (still exist)

This is at the top of my head so happy to be corrected.

Don't forget University...
Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer!

Not sure if they are seen as "original", as I think they entered the comp around 1906 and only last a few years(?), but they certainly were part of the VFL (as whatever it was called in those days.

I think University was short for "Melbourne University"?

I should google it really

But I think you could be right Batty... pretty sure Uni were classed as foundation

Yep.... if you believe Wiki....

"Many of the current AFL teams date back to the beginnings of the sport of Australian rules football, including the very first club, Melbourne Football Club (1859), a foundation VFL/AFL club whose founders also first codified the sport in 1859. The Victorian Football League, commonly known as the VFL, started in 1897 with eight teams from the Victorian Football Association (VFA): Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, South Melbourne, and St Kilda. Richmond and University entered in 1908, but University disbanded in 1915. In 1925, Footscray (later known as the Western Bulldogs), Hawthorn and North Melbourne entered the competition. It remained in this 12-team single-state configuration until 1982 when South Melbourne relocated to Sydney, New South Wales to become the Sydney Swans."
Whatever!

Okies so getting back to Snowbunny83's question re: the "Original 12", I am guessing she still means:

Carlton
Collingwood
Essendon
Geelong
Hawthorn
Fitzroy
Footscray
Melbourne
North Melbourne
Richmond
South Melbourne
St Kilda

University seems more of the "forgotten" team given they last 7-8 years in the comp.

No, taking the question literally, University would have to replace one of either Footscray, Hawthorn or Nth Melbourne as the "first" Victorian teams.
1. Carlton
2. Collingwood
3. Essendon
4. Fitzroy
5. Geelong
6. Melbourne
7. South Melbourne
8. St Kilda
as the 1st 8 teams then add
9. Richmond
10. University
then toss up between
11,12,13 = Footscray, Richmond and Nth Melbourne
just because University disbanded in 1915 doesn't preclude them from being one of the 1st 12 "Victorian teams"

I'm sure some smart *** Trivia wizz would argue otherwise
Whatever!

Somehow I think Snowbunny83 is not really going to worry too much about the 1908-15 University team

From 1925-81, the 12 team comp stayed constant which is good enough for me

Did you grow up in melbourne??

i find that you learn a lot from other people and seeing i still play and spend 2 nights and 1 day a week at a footy club then you are bound to pick up a lot of stuff off the guys there as it is the main topic of conversation down there.

no worries Snowbunny83
Although I don't follow the AFL much nowadays, as a kid I used to absorb Rugby League/AFL/VFL/cricket history statistics like it was going out of fashion. I seem to have retained alot of what I read when I was younger!

I can prove quite useful at trivia nights when historical sports questions pop up

I blame it on my parents. At easter, rather then give us chocolate eggs, they gave us kiddies books to read
