    pack
    shovel
    transceiver
    probes
    food/water
    others with experience
    first aid kit

    i would also take:

    phone
    extra layers
    spare gloves
    thermal blanket
    snow shoes/ skins

    Day trip, walking and carrying skis. nothing too serious, are there guided trips you can do to kind of get the know how?

    also, wasn't planning on venturing out too much further than i knew where I was, then again, that may be an ignorant comment. Is most of this stuff avalb. in Australia or will I have to find a foreign website?

    First off, don't do it alone.
    How are you going to get up slopes so that you can ski down? I would suggest snow shoes, and a small pack that you can tie your skis to when you're climbing, and your snow shoes to when you're skiing.
    A probe is probably overkill (at least in Australia), unless you're going into areas where avalanches are a possibility.
    Some sort of emergency shelter - just in case you get caught in a blizzard (better to be safe than sorry)
