MEDIA RELEASE

Due to some unusually warm temperatures over the past week, the Home Basin has insufficient snow cover to proceed with opening day as scheduled and unfortunately we will be postponing the start of the 2017 season.

Despite receiving snowfall earlier in the month and our snowmaking upgrade to Upper Easy Rider, the temperatures on the mountain have meant we cannot make enough snow on the Home Basin runs.Operational staff are monitoring the forecast closely and weather services forecast freezing levels to drop during the week. Treble Cone are hopeful that this will fall further allowing more to be made on the main runs in the Home Basin, putting the mountain in a position to open. The Snowmakers are working hard and making snow when the conditions allow.

“All our staff are ready to go as soon as the snow does come and we are hoping that the colder temperatures are not far away. Unfortunately, the mountain has been experiencing extremely warm conditions for this time of year. Our Base Building sits at 1260m altitude, which is one of the lowest in the Southern Lakes making it difficult in these weather conditions to create snow all the way down to our base. We will open as soon as we physically can for all of our customers, the ski community and staff,” commented Jackie van der Voort, CEO, Treble Cone Ski Area.

Treble Cone has been extremely busy over the summer months with the new Twelve60 café and customer storage extension built in the Plaza, the Learner’s area and Snowplay upgrade and expansion, drop off zone and extra car parking at the base building.

We have also introduced for 2017 our own Queenstown Express Shuttle bus, as well as building on the successful Wanaka bus service and are celebrating our partnership with Mountainside Early Learning Centre for our customer’s childcare needs.

Further information as it unfolds on the mountain’s opening will be updated on the Snow Report on treblecone.com and on Treble Cone’s Facebook page.
