not sure what you mean by good, but, Aqua dining is lovely food with a great, nay, spectacular view of harbour bridge etc. It is above Luna Park.
Service can be variable, but food and view worth it.
not cheap, but not Sydney's dearest.
Garfish is more a good local restaurant. We have been to Crows Nest a few times for breaky (spanner crab omelette yum, waffles with bacon and maple syrup also yum. They have another one at Kirribilli and I'm guessing the formula is the same.
Japanese, I can't recommend Koi at Hunters Hill highly enough. Really really interesting modern Japanese. Sushi chef was head of ANA Unkai for a long time, dessert chef was from Rockpool. The menu reads as very exy, and I guess it is, but the food is stunning (eggplant w miso is fantastic)...don't skip dessert. It is not hard to get to from North Sydney (easier than the city and parking no worries). If you get there early you could have a little walk down to the old dry dock at Woolwich. Nice area.
If you went in with a $100 a head budget you would be well fed and watered. Spend more if you want excess, or go easy, drink less, and spend more like $70 a head.

There's a tepanyaki place in the Coles centre near the Oaks, which is just over the highway from North Sydney. Great little spot!

I havent dined out for a couple of years now so I'd go with everyoine else's ideas - mine would be hopelessly out of date!

There is a great pre theatre restaurant in the Ensemble theatre at Kirribilli.
Bayleys. It is right on the water at Kirribilli. Really lovely spot. The menu is small but everything on it is great. Nice wine list too. And best of all, it is not too exy.
You could try to book a bit later, or book at 6 and go see Mary Stuart (I think that is what's on ATM). It's a very excellent period drama on Elizabeth and Mary...really well done. Greta Scachi plays Elizabeth. Not all the silly frilly words of Shakespeare though, so much easier to follow.
google ensemble.

Rengaya in North Sydney. Ultimate Japanese fine dining in Sydney IMO!
