People taking up skiing as kids rather than snowboarding.

According to some figures just released it seems in the under 17 age group, which used to be mostly snowboarders is now holding ground for being as many skiers as board riders, and as expected as they get older certainly more skiers than boarders.

I am not surprised with that Paul. Ever since they put a tip on the back of skis they are cool enough for the kids to ride.

Nor am I surprised about the spend on gear since age 10 - different gear for different ages, things wear out and there is always the next technology and technique to learn.

We've told ours that they can't learn to snowboard until they turn 10 (and ski all the blacks properly) - so far they're happy with that. Only 3 seasons to go (but they've done almost all of the blacks at FC).

My 16 year old son tried snowboarding two years ago, even though all his mates are snowboarders he decided after only two days of snowboarding that skiing is the way he likes to go.

I think it is just whatever you are into , if you skate a lot or surf or wakeboard then you would maybe lean towards Boarding over skiing , I know as a kid I did skiing and did not like it one bit and even now I ski like rubbish ! But put me on a board and I will ride all day long . In fact that experience with skiing when I was a kid turned me off even going to the snow for a long long time and didn't go back until we did a trip one time to Jindy just to hang out and I thought why not, I should jump on a board and from then on I have never not gone to the snow.

Yup done the same with our children, although not overly concerned about the black run thing. To be honest the blacks at Falls are not that hard really. Our little fella was doing them at 4 years old and I often see ski school snakes heading down them.
