We have been given a very generous offer to have the use of a 4wd for about 6 weeks for our Colorado adventure.

We will only be using the vehicle in Colorado itself. Anyone know anything about insurance cover on vehicles being valid for non residents.

Colorado has a minmum level of cover required by the vehicle owner for it to be legal.

We have a 4WD booked form Hertz and dont want to cancel until we are all sorted...

    Any advice appreciated.

    Anything on a dmv website?

Can your owner ask his insurer: at the very least I'd think the insurer needs to know there's a new regular driver from a country that drives on the 'wrong' side of the road.

Hertz hutz, and I think they upsell insurance to tired travellers. There are plenty of places on the net that include all insurances and so me are nil excess. Our Jeep is about $35 p/day over 3 weeks.

    I'd...

    1. Do as Vet says as step 1. Ask friend about coverage on their insurance for other drivers. An oz driver licence should be fine (in theory) if their insurance conmpany is OK with it. I know other people who have done this in cali.

    2. Contact AAA in colarado and ask. They may have something suitable for out-of-towners.

    3. Ask over at the dark side. I seem to recall Cherry Ripe's in laws live in colarado and she & +1 travel there regularly. Which means she probably borrows their car!

    Personally,

I stopped taking "extra" cover on any rental years ago. RORT, RORT, RORT.

I rent a lot and insurance has become a complete rort. Yes they should ring and ask what's covered cause USA is even more stupid.

Ask yourself, cheaper to rent than borrow??? Does that make any sort of sense?

    It hurtz.

Yesterday I looked at a big brand's policy - seriously it was full of the most ridiculous escape clauses. I'm not complaining, I just wish I could get away with selling something that doesn't exist.

While its not relevant to Northern boarder I found supercheapcar.com, economycarrentals.com and cars on vaustralia.com.au offered a 'insurace included;' price. economycarrentals offered 'no excess' too.

Also worth checking what your travel insurance offers in terms of excess cover etc to make sure you don't end up double insuring. I had a Hertz car when over there with their basic insurance. Ended up breaking a rear light, expected the worst and lots of red tape but when I checked the car back in the inspector looked at it and just let me go!
