Post O/S car insurance and ccard policies

I recall I think posts suggesting one doesn't need to take out a hire company's policy if one pays on credit card. I thought I'd check with a platinum card's insurer, Zurich, if I could simply not take out say Hertz car insurance and would still be covered if the hire car was totalled. Answer: No policy which means no excess exists for the card insurer to indemnify me for. Ouch. At least he warned against wasting money on a 'no excess' policy - but the excess now has to be less than $A2750. Last time I looked, excess on hire cars was $US3,000. Hmmm.

Translation: It seems that card's complimentary travel insurance won't cover a bingle in a hire car unless you take out the hirer's insurance policy and pay a top-up to reduce the excess to $A2750. ($A2,750 isn't close these days to an excess of say $US3000)

As part of the hiring arrangement You must take
up all comprehensive motor insurance or waivers
offered by the rental agency, whether discretionary or mandatory, against loss or damage to Rental Vehicle during the rental period.

From my card insurance T & C. Other travel insurance that I have taken in the past doesn't state this, I'm pretty sure.

Hired a car in USA in Feb this year (also have platinum visa with Zurich) and yes...you are correct re having to take all hire car's insurances.

FTR - I didn't understand a word you said either until you translated!!! You have a unique way of expressing yourself Vet!

Well I have been told that the car hire I have has no excess. It's included and that if they try to sell me this when I am over there to tell them it is covered in the car hire policy I took out. I was very curious about that when I booked it but Flight Centre rep was adamant it was. The clause says - Full Vehicle insurance cover including Third Party, Fire and Theft with NIL EXCESS (in large print that last bit to stand out)

It can vary greatly depending on the c/card's insurance policy.

For example, the latest version of the CBA gold/platinum policy covers vehicle excess provided:

as part of the rental agreement you have taken comprehensive motor insurance against loss of or damage to the rental vehicle
No requirement to take out all insurance, or have all of the excess below a limit. The cover is limited to $2,250 of the excess - so you'd wear any difference above that.

Note: Zurich is the underwriter of this particular policy, so there can be quite different terms despite the same insurer being involved (as Vet's example).
