Hey Guys

We have a week in late July at perisher and well my friend and I both have Wranglers and will have a full cars which means there is no room in the car for ski's and snowboards so I am taking a trailer down from Sydney, but being a good 4w4 er but very inexperienced at driving on snow/ice, last year was my 1st time driving on it, I am worried about taking a trailer up the mountain especially,

IF anyone has any experience doing this and some safety concerns, especially as wranglers are not a very heavy 4w4 it worry's me

I towed a trailer into Dinner Plain plenty of times with snow / ice on the road, never had any problems.

Hotham RMB will make you fit chains to your trailer if your going over the mountain and chains are being fitted to 2wd.

Yes, I know that it is NOT Perisher, I would tow a trailer up there in winter behind a 4x4.

Keeping in mind your chances of having a 'moment' will be higher with a trailer.

Maybe ring the RTA and see if your even allowed to tow.

Thanks Azz, I think it might be a good idea to call the RTA

You will need to fit chairs before you leave home to all wheels including the trailer. When I drive to the snow I will fit chains before I leave home every time just in case.

If you have good tyres on your trailer you should be fine. Parking may be a problem if you are staying on the mountain. Why not rent a roof box?

Not staying on the mountain
Staying at the station I can see parking a problem there too,

Roof box will not be able to hold everything as there is no boot space with my back seat down although will be big enough to hold ski's and boards that's it,

and I am planning on taking the other wranglers luggage so either way I am taking a trailer its just a matter if I take it up the mountain or not
Also roof rack I wonder if I can even have one fit as its a soft top/hardtop, should just make em catch the ski tube rofl

If you are staying at the Station. Tow the trailer there dump everything in your rooms and take the 4WDs only up the mountain.

You'll be OK for parking at the station. Even at the busiest times I found a spot. You just might have to park a far way away and then walk to fit the trailer.

I even parked on the grass in front of our room a few times tongue.gif Even though your not meant to, but I didn't have a choice! Gotta love driving over logs! graemlins/penguin.gif

Leave the trailer at the Station and drive to the skitube. Even if you have to take the trailer to the skitube, there is always parking at the tube carpark.

you won't have your luggage in the car when you head up the mountain, so leave the trailer at the station and once at Perisher, leave skis up there overnight, problem solved

Take the bindings off, and they will pack heaps better. We have Thule box, and its great.

oops... didn't see the soft top bit... maybe you can pretend its a ute and put in fake bars to hold stuff up there..like the snowatch mobile has in the pic HERE (http://www.snowatch.com.au/)
however I see that might be a bit of overkill if it's a once in a while trip to the snow.... ;)

The way I read Shorty's post he/she has a full Wrangler (4-5 people) and therefore no room for any luggage/skis in the car at all and that is the reason for the trailer so.............
Bags get dumped at room at Station
1st day HTFU and get the rear passengers to hold skis with boots etc tucked under feet for a short 45 min trip.
Get a week locker hire at Perisher for storage during the week
Last day reverse the back seat passengers to have an uncomfortable 45mins ride down the hill
Eliminates need to lug a trailer up and down the hill every day which in the end would probably cost more in extra fuel than a weekly locker hire

we have done what pol said a number of times - particularly with 4 people in a suzuki swift! you can make it work, but it is uncomfortable. ditching things at the station makes the first ride up that bit easier, bit there isn't much you can do on the last day.

I've always found roof boxes too one dimesional. eg. they're blardy hard to fill with a load of mulch or soil compared to the good old boxy.

Thanks everyone for your input
I do actually have a hard top on it at the moment, but I don't think I want to put a roof box on it, I am really not sure how they go with the hard top cos it slides off when i put the soft top on,
I am thinking might just use the ski tube,

Reason being if my back seat isn't folded up there is no way boards and ski's will fit min atleast 3 in my wrangler, and 4 in the other wrangler, last year was ok as was just 2 of us in my jeep and I still had my board hit me in the back of my head

and shorty, roof box sliding off? umm you attach it to roof racks, no chance of it sliding off then. Can you put roof racks on your hard top?

Shorty936
12-05-2009, 10:40 AM
no no no lol

My Hard top slides off nice and easy and its mostly plastic I don't really want to be attaching roof racks to it as it wont be the most stable setup with how the hard top works

Also my hard to pis 3 piece's that go together

Just remeber to bring a chain and paddlock with spare keys if your planning on leaving the trailer somewhere. better yet bring a trailer lock.

also make sure the wheel bearings are serviced on the trailer before going because the last thing you want is them collapsing halfway to the snow
