Afternnon all!

Got here safe and sound after a relatively painfree drive down. The girls played their DSi the whole way. A request for a toilet stop just before gouldburn macca's meant that the girls also wanted to eat, it was close enough to lunch so thought what the hell. It was about 1130am.

Stopped to fuel up in Cooma and pushed on to ski tube. Just missed the 230 train so we were in the lodge about 330pm.

Guns were blazing on the half pipe when we got here, trying to get people motivated for night skiing.

No night skiing because we had 4 ski's to tune and wax.

We gott a good production line going with the waxing - I put it on and Icecold scraped it off :)

My old ski's had to be adjusted to my boots which wouldn't happen, we think the bindings are broken (they are 10 yrs old!)

I tried for a while then asked IceCold to have a look, he got fed up and just said. 'Just use my spare's' YAY.

170 Salamon Hot Chilli's for me!

The whole carpark is white which means the reported couple of cm came all the way down to the 'village'. We couldn't tell last night if it was snowing because the man made was dusting over the lodge. Never had man made cover my accom. Oh and we are on the other side so didn't hear the guns which is a plus, I heard a couple of groomers and skidoo's tho.

Having lunch at blue cow terminal. Will probably do one run after, if the weather is still sh!t (and I think it is as it has been getting worse all morning) I will ski back to perisher and call it quits.

It has been alternating between big flakes, nothing and balls of ice all morning, not to cold though.

So back to this morning - getting the girls dressed and out the door proved pretty easy and we made it 10mins early to ski school drop off.

I had to come back to the lodge to pick up my pre arrange ski pass and ran into another family who invited me out skiing with them. We headed over to the Forrester Quad and headed up to mid station. We then did two runs down Happy Valley T-Bar which was at your own peril... you couldn't see 5 meters in front of you and there was definatly a few obsticals coming through the cover.

A quick stop at mid station for a hot choccie and then we decided to head over to Pretty Valley - it was busy over there - the punters weren't stupid it was the best visablity in the resort but we didn't stick around we head straight for Interceptor.. Two runs at interceptor and I left the family and went over to find IceCold over at Blue Cow.

On the way Roller Coaster did not look like it had been groomed but that may have been because the cover is getting a bit thin (do they snow make there?) quiet a few unmarked obsticules made it no where near as enjoyable as it usual is.

I decided to hit up Zali's as it had been listed as Groomers pick of the day... not sure why as it didn't even look like it had been groomed. I know I was late getting to these runs but it was pretty quiet over there so it couldn't have been tracked out that quickly...

I found IceCold and spent a very long lunch debating wether to ski again or not. Decide to have one run with IceCold (we have never skied together) so we headed up Summit and down Zali's again. Back up Ridge and this time we headed over to Excelerator, which was an excellent idea because as soon as we got to the top the sun made it way through the clouds and it turned out that Excelerator is what should have been the groomers pick of the day. It was soooo nice. A trip up Ridge and a quick photo before the clouds rolled back in almost instantly so I decided to make my way back over to Front Valley.

I picked up the girls and we headed back to the lodge. Thankfully they weren't to keen to go out again.

I have also done a post on my blog on why I am now leaning towards a Perisher seasons pass

Good morning

I have a new noise to complain about...

Forget groomer's skidoo's and snow guns... Last night was a bit warm so that mean the snow was melting which mean it all fell of the roof. It sounded terrible you had to keep reminding yourself. What is was cause sometimes it sounded like a gun shot!

The worst was when you were almost asleep then CRASH, you were jumping out your skin. I am still amazed the girls sleep through it. I didn't even realise there was that much snow on the roof.

It is not the windy down on front valley but am sure it will be up high.

Afternoon all

In some ways today was better and in some ways today was worst.

Had a shocker of a morning girls weren't co-operating and we were later than I would like dropping them off to ski school. The I realised i didn't pack my lunch or fill the blader on my pack so basically I was carrying an empty pack... except for the one thing I knew you would all love my camera.

So lots of pics today and even a bit of video to show you how windy it was.

Back to the day. After dropping the girls off I clicked in about 9.20 and decided to push/skate over to the Quad as there was a massive queue at the village 8. I should have paid more attention because when I rounded the pub I relaised there was a massive queue for Stuart Tbar (sorry if I am not getting the right T names..) The Quad was deserted - they weren't expecting to turn that baby on at all today, so I had to **** it up and queue like everyone else for stuart T. A couple of emails to Pods whilst in the queue and she suggested i head for Smigs as it would be more sheltered (If i ski Perisher I am normally with people who know the mtn well so really dont pay attention to where or what we are doing I just follow blindly, but skiing on my own as much as I am and I am very much out of my comfort zone).

But just as i got to the top IceCold called and said he was at Mid station on the Quad so i decided to head in his direction so headed down to Lawson and then leichardt T's and over to happy Valley. Hung out at Mid station for a bit deciding where to head to next when someone in Mtn Ops suggested trying Eyre as he thought it would be more sheltered. So in that direction we headed.

We went down Happy Valley and headed over International way, then Eyre. He was were right, nice windblown stashes and the wind definatley wasn't as bad. At around this point I recieved a call from Jahoota. I told him that it was really nice over this way and said come join us. We tried International again as we had seen a nice line of windblown and we decided that International was the pick for the day. It was slightly more sheltered than Eyre too. It was just they very top as you came up the T and then for a couple of turns it was a bit hard going. Spent an hour or so here and did a couple of runs with Jahoota and his son before our tummy's started rumbling.

IceCold had rememebered his lunch but I had to head back to the lodge but I didn't mind my face was burning a bit.

I found out when I got back to the lodge that i had left my rolls in the oven and they had to be rescued before they caught alight. Opps. I am not used to getting 3 people ready for skiing. Thankfully no one was to concerned.

A couple of friends when they were skibuming in Europe taught me the best pack lunch for the mountain. I am really anal about frsh bread so stock up on the decent sized parbakes and then pop them in the oven for a bit and then make ham and cheese or leftover from dinner the night before. I also throw in a piece of fruit and a chocolate bar. Yes I admit it is a bit hard when you are trying to get kids organised but usually if i have a bunch of friends with me we get a great routine going.

Also I think I checked the girls into ski school with Hackett07 well I know his first name and put two and two together, was too embaressed to introduce myself as I am sure I looked like a phsyco mum LOL.

Anyway here are today pics

A very quiet Mid station. this was 10am so prime Hot Choccie time.

yep, thread hijack! great to met you ozgirl over on mt p. The queues over at eyre and internation were great(like no one!). Everywhere else was horrid. I have never seen it so bad.

The wind hold of lots of chairs created chaos. The plus was not many people ventured over to eyre & international. :D

catch you for coffee tomorrow.

OMG it was crazy busy at pick up - even more disorganised than drop off - there is no system everyone pushes and shoves to find there kids.

Oh course there was two class that were late back and my youngest charge was the absolute last of the last.

There is two boys the same age and ability as the girls and we were all glad to see that they were put in the same classes. The two eldest and the youngest one went back up the ski school magic carpet we pleaded with them to let them up but then the wouldn;t let them down the ski school area and sent them over to front valley. so the other parent had to run over to help the four year old.

Not long after the last class came screaming into view - you shoudl have heard all the Muuummmmmmmm's that were screamed as the kids all skied stright to their parents.

Did not see Hackett again and towards the end of the wait i thought - would it be funny if he was their teacher? but no. I hope that doesn't mean he didn't get a class as we all know that a monday class means a whole week. He was very polite to the crazy lady this morning :)

I have a bit of video but you will see a major quailty difference but oh well.

ozgirl
20-07-2009, 06:36 PM
Decided video is crap and the video of the kids this arvo is quicktime and i dont have the software to edit it.

Lot's of free plugins and codecs available for windows software to play .mov files.

or try;

Mpeg streamclip (http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html) it will convert all video files into almost all formats for free.

ozgirl
20-07-2009, 09:01 PM
Yeah It does Pods - but the cideo is crap - nothing really on it.

On my phone it brought it in on the PC as quicktime and so i cant edit it.

This is the two eldest kids and then youngest (4yo) riding the magic carpet. The Lifties and an instructor let them on then the same instructor closed the lift at the top and made them go left instead of right - around the fenced off adult magic carpet and on to main front valley - a long way away from the drop point whilst we were waiting for the other two kids.

Here is the last class of the day coming back at around 3.50pm word is that there was a tantrum by anohter girl in the class and she just wouldn't move anymore. Go the instructor for getting her down I say.

http://tinypic.com/r/30l2nb6/3

Re the kids 2 girls (my charges) and three boys.
Boy 1 and Girl 1 are 9 and in black diamond class.

Girl 2 and Boy 2 are both 6 - and are in black diamond as well but not the same as the older kids.

then there is Boy 3 who is four - i shall refer to them as that from now on :)

quicktime format is .mov so your pc should be able to edit it in windows movie maker

ozgirl
20-07-2009, 09:26 PM
It wont import it - error msg - The file H:\BlackBerry\videos\VID 00008-20090720-1553.3GP is not a supported file type, and it cannot be imported into Windows Movie Maker.

tis okay I can upload them seperatley just wanted to edit them into one - wont use my phone again - crap quality anyway.

Not that the camera is any better.

yes, cause quicktime will play that file type, but the native file format for QT is .mov. yours is .3GP which is a mobile phone format, you need to convert it to something else for a PC to edit it.

Do you have a point and shoot digi cam? They are usually in a different format, easier to manipulate and better quality etc

What an amazing day!!

Such fun.

Started with a coffee with Jahoota, and his mate and we also bumped into BrumbyJack. Nice to put a face to them name.

Then we headed over to Mt P to meet up with the rest of Jahoota's lot. Spent the morning over there before I headed to Blue Cow.

Lots of punters on the mountain today. Got some pics and lots of stories.

First guy was around mid station - competent boarder but he was wearing jans and a windstopper. My guess is that he was an inside worker who forgot ski pants. Wasn't quick enough with the camera.

Next was a couple of losers on the intercepter who didn'y move over to let people on at mid staion, their punishment was that one of them snapped their poles in two. So funny - sort of got a pic of that i think - camera is flat currently charging it.

Pol knows Perisher like the back of his hand, probably better and for anyone that does it's pretty obvious where you're staying!

Hi all

Just having too much fun :)

ozgirl

No friends on a powder day....

Well I wanted some but no one wanted to play with me.

But then I got a new friend - Hoots gave SC my number and so we hung out for the day.

The morning was so so, we spent it trying to escape the wind and queue lines - we didn't have much luck.

Stopped for an early lunch at Guthega Pub - which is now up there in my top ten!

I had never been there before - they are lovely people. Service with a smile and all that jazz. I heard that it is pretty much a given that we would be there on the slide weekend, so looking forward to that and having some of the food there. The plates that went past looked YUM YUM YUM.

Speaking of looking forward to dinner at Candlelight tomorrow night :)

After lunch we did some random runs that were really fun - SC and I seem to like the same stuff.

And my form was better so the afternoon was a lot more enjoyable than the morning. SC had to keep reminding me that I had to pick up the girls.

Of course they didn't want to go out again - I was stunned. Got a few laughs out of the instructors when I exclaimed 'It is one of the best days of the season and you want to go in!!'

Tomorrow will be an awesome day but the groomers have a bit of work - the wind exposed a lot of unmarked obstcules.

Just uploading some other pics and also a bit of vid.

OH MY GOD

OH MY GOD
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have just had one of the top 5 days days of my life!!

Def the best skiing day EVER in oz!

First of all thanks very much to skijac for looking after me and lending my her +1 set up which definatley helped make the day awesome.

I have only just got home after a really nice dinner at T-bar resturant. Food was amazing everyone loved their dishes, I had the beef tenderloin - Yum. Cooked to perfection. But yes service is SERVERLY lacking. I waited 15mins before I got someone attention to order a drink.

But back to the day - you may have to wait til sunday for the pics as I am going to go to bed soon and tomorrow is going to be crazy with check out and trying to ski.

woke up at 6am and it was rush rush rush go go go to get the girls and all our gear over to ski tube for the 7.12 tube.

Got to thredbo at 8 and d1icked around as only one can do with kids and it was almost 8.45 before I swung in to say hi to spaz and get the girls breaky at avalanche. Found Jac at spaz and we headed of to get me breaky gourmet 42 (nice coffee) before getting gear for me and heading up the mountain.

ozgirl
24-07-2009, 10:37 PM
Oh and we had to organise to drop the car off at dead horse gap.

It was about 1130 when we were about to head up the crowd was horrendous!! But I fixed that by accidently breaking the bindings on more borrowed ski's - opps... I was crushed. Thankfully nothing was actually broken and Jac just ran off to find some brute strength to get it back together. Thankfully that was the only hickup of the day.

And I was really worried that there was going to be more. I was worried I was going to hate hiking and that I would whinge the whole way and ruin it for jac. (I hiked to kosi last summer for the first tome and whinged the whole way - and have been know to complain doing BC overseas before)

Anyway while Jac got the binding fixed the queue eased slightly and in no tome where were on the lift heading up to the nasty wind. You know the type where you actaully striggle to get off the chair? At the top of crackenback I actually conteplated not going any further but I pressed on.

ozgirl
24-07-2009, 10:44 PM
Next we headed over to the basin, there wasn't too may people around.

It really wasn't that nice at all. We pushed on to karels where the wind was just getting a bit worst. It wasn't very nice when we stopped to put the skins on.

Again I thought about sugesting turning around.

But very shortly after we set off over the back of karels towards Ramshead I am not sure whether the wind died a little or that I was having so much fun Skinning (seriously who would of thought I would enjoy it, or even be ok at it - and jac said I was!)

That I just didn't care?

ozgirl
24-07-2009, 11:02 PM
I really think skijac is going to have to fill in the blanks of all the names of everything because I am a bit too tired to remember. But at one point the wind really did die down. But not before I had another moment of doubt, the clouds were rolling in but even though I had only met jac that morning I knew she wouldn't go out if she was worried so we pushed on.

Oh and I never mentioned any of this to jac LOL.

So yes it was a bit of an effort to get out there but really it was no where near as hard as I thought,

And the reward??

Oh the reward was oh so nice!!

We got a hint of it when getting in and out of our skins that we were sinking to our knees.

My ski's (pocket rockets) were awesome and glided through the snow like butter. The snow was still very fresh and soft. There was a couple of patches of ice in wind blown areas but they only lasted a second.

Although we had seen other people heading out the back and even followed a couple of tracks out there when we got to Ramshead there were none and for at least 2/3rds of the run we had fresh tracks.

It was only the last 5 mins when the snow instantly changed and it was very heavy going.

When we got to Jac's car the best thing was she pulled. A bottle of chardy out of the back!!!!

ozgirl

A perfect way to end a perfect run!!

Half a dozen snowboarders pulled up just when we were drinking the wine and very very impressed.

I told them 'see that's the benefit of taking girls out BC'

They had done DHG which was pretty tracked out so I was very glad to borrow the set up and be able to go out further a field.

I am really not sure this report is doing it justice - and really really want to thank skijac for taking a chace on me and taking me out there.

I have been trying to think of a way to repay her but there is just nothing I think that could even come close!

Ok, so I took Ozgirl outback from Thredbo for a taste of the Australian backcountry skiing.

Yes the snow was one of the best I have found and the tundra was complete with powder rather than waves of ice and straz.

We headed out from the top of Karels heading to the back bowl of the Ramsheads. We had quite a wind blowing, but once we hit mid Ramshead the wind disappeared yet we could see that it was still happening. We could see that Perisher was in cloud.

Ozgirl was still recovering from a cold and had a cough - so we took it easy - she did not complain, which is good.

Moving into the bowl section we could see that lovely snow was covering the whole area, Pyramid was looking very nice, so I put that one away for another day.

We moved onto the mid section of the Ramsheads and pulled off the skins to ski across to Ramshead proper and we then skirted around looking down at Leatherbarrel and continued on to South Ramshead.

Well as I expected South Ramshead had the powder, one that is rarely seen in Australia.

We skied down to the trees had had fun weaving through the trees and the powder was absolutely fab, dry and fluffy, not creamy.

We skied down to the car at the lower Dead Horse Gap carpark - where we declared that we should open a bottle of chardonnay - yep it was fun, and fab one of those memorable days.

Today I did another ski outback and skied a few other faces, with the final run as a repeat of yesterday, but the moisture had a heavy hand overnight with a cold snap creating a crust over most of the areas, with pockets of yesterdays memories.

Another fab day - will post photos later. Much later.

Weather is now closing in at Thredbo, the change is coming in and we could see more snow tomorrow and next week.

We are looking up towards Cascades valley which then goes to the Barry Way. To the left in the picture is Bobs Ridge.

The ski down from this point all the way to the top part of the road, was powder dry and not creamy - just one of those memorable days. The only person we came across was a guy heading outback skinning towards the top of South Ramshead. No one else seen and no tracks.
