View Full Version : Commuting to and from work - is this a record?
Was chatting with someone from work today when she had to cut the conversation short because she had to leave to get home at a decent time. I asked where she lived and she said "Beyond Shepparton". I was shocked because that is MILES from the Melbourne CBD (where the office is). I did some google map directions and its like 200kms away?!
She said it takes her 3 hours to and from work!! That's 6 hours of commuting a day!! Holy crap - I almost fell off my chair!! I think I would lose the plot if that was the case - there are only so many TV shows and DVDs you can watch?
And I thought my 20 min walk to work was long enough smile.gif
Anyone's commute longer then that? For a few months I used to commute from Wollongong to Sydney. After about a month I just moved to Sydney smile.gif

Missus frog used to do 2 hours each way from the gong to North Sydney. She has a company car now so only takes an hour and a half to get to work.

graemlins/big_laugh.gif Now that's a great commute!!!
A girl on our project lives in Brisbane and works in Melbourne. She does the flight each Monday morning and Friday afternoon.
One of the girls from our software supplier is here pretty much every week at the moment and she lives in NZ!
A couple of friends live in Torquay and work in Melbourne.
A guy at our old vendor lives in Rye. When I found out I asked him what he did on the commute, 'Sleep' was the answer.
When I living in Sydney, I was assigned to a project in Melbourne. Spent 2 years flying to Melbourne on Sunday night/Monday morning and back to Sydney on Friday afternoon/Sat morning. Whilst tiring, at least it was only 2 days of "trael time" during the week. I could not imagine doing 6 hours every day.
One benefit of all that flying was the balance on the frequent flyer account got pretty high smile.gif Helped pay for many holidays.

I couldnt stand 1 hour each way for school....
In the long run, its approximately 250 days multiplied by 6 hours.
Think of all that spare time....
My boss works here in Canberra and lives in Adelaide. Commutes every weekend.

I think the commute is the time you spend to get to work each day.Understandably if you live and work in different cities and travel once a week, that's hard, but for me, the Shep to Melb girl who does that every day wins... although that's truly silly.
Lucky me .... my commute is a 30 sec walk across the back yard!

Yup agreed with Tambo. Whilst I was flying from SYD-MEL twice a week, I was less then 5 mins to the office when in Melbourne.
Travelling 3 hours each way just to get to work is pretty insane.....6 hours of day is too valuale to waste on a train or bus!

I live in Melb and work in Darwin/Alice Springs haha! 5-8 hour commute one way dependent on carriers route once every 2-3 weeks.
Also have done Melb to Bendigo commute 1.5 hours each way for the last 5 weeks and also recently Melb to Horsham commute 3hrs each way for 10 weeks prior (not every day but most days)
Have a friend who works for optometry chain and he does, Melb to Geelong on Monday to Tues, Geelong to Horsham Wed to Thurs, Horsham to Werribee Fri and Sat, and Sunday gets home for a rest in Richmond!
It ****s! :(

I know people who catch the train from Nowra to Sydney every day.
thats solid
Nowra - Sydney....ouch!!
If that was me, I think I would end up doing one of the following:
* leaving that job
* move to sydney
* arrange "work from home" 3 days a week.
I hope they have a laptop/DVD, etc to entertain them on those long trips!

thats solid wow...and unless they work close to Central Station, that would mean 2 trains then either another or a bus. No direct trains from Nowra are there? I think you have to change at Kiama.

Tobes, you gotta move to a more friendly public transport area smile.gif Mind you, that would be a challenge as Melboure's trains are pretty average at best...
Oh that's just because I am lazy and don't walk the 10 mintues to the station.
I live in a public transport friendly area. It's just quicker to catch the tram and two trains than it is to catch a tram which will stop at EVERY stop along StKilda Road in the morning and take longer to get to work.
There's a tram stop at my front door which has two different trams that travel down my street.
The station is a 10 minutes walk away.
The only issue is that as I live on the Sandringham line it doesn't go through the loop so I have to change at Richmond to get to the office.

A girl in our office does Newcastle - Sydney everyday.
My old boss used to do Shoalhaven Heads - Sydney Monday to Friday.
I've been lucky nearly always lived within 30 - 45 mins from work
Bah it only takes me 20 mintues to drive down there!
I still live 5 mintues from the beach, it's just not a beach I would swin in. graemlins/cold.gif
That said I will probably buy down that way when I'm ready to buy.

we have several people traveling from various parts of the central coast to sydney every day and one from moss vale to north ryde though that's not every day, only when they need to be in the office. however the customers that person visits are as far over as chatswood so they are constantly driving all over sydney from moss vale!

Years ago I was living down in Elwood (Nepean Highway?). Tram was right outside the front door but like you it took an eternity to go up St Kilda Road smile.gif
Rather then walk I got myself a razor scooter and scootered to Elsternwick or Balaclava train station (forgot which one it was)......the scooter saved a few mins I reckon!

Anything over 1 hr is just plain silly. Having lived out of Sydney for the last three years i think 10 minutes is stretching the friendship.
I currently work about 5 seconds from the master bedroom, but sometimes i have to commute 4 hours to the office (Wagga to Dubbo).

Otherwise it's Brighton Road. ;)
I live about 3 minutes from here. smile.gif
I used to live right near the Babble on Babylon cafe :)
Not sure if thats Brighton Road or Nepean highway?
It's Brighton Road there.
I used to live about 500 metres down the road.
Now I live around the corner.

I once worked with a bloke from Ansett airlines who lived in Melbourne and worked at Sydney airport. It would usually take him about 30 minutes to drive to Tullmarine and catch the next Ansett plane to sydney. On a good day he would be at work just over 2 hours after getting out of bed.
