Is Swine Flu going to stop your travels? Just interested to find out what other people are doing.
I might put travel on hold until we all know what's going on a bit more ...

I think that if I was planning on going, but not yet paid, I would postpone unnecessary travel.

If it's still a problem in September we will think about it then!!!
I've got more important things to think about right now.

ABC website has a good graphic on how it is transferred so easily. Basically because pigs are large mammals, they are very similar to us, human diseases are able to move to pigs, and transform and come back. the graphic explains it much better than that!

pigs are one of the closest animals to humans
we use pig skin for grafts and there has been discussion about growing organs for transplanting from pigs

Well travel plans have been postponed. I can't get travel insurance that will cover me medically anywhere worldwide against anything that is flu like.
Rule number 1. Always buy travel insurance after you buy the ticket!! Don't trust credit card insurance!
I originally was using the credit card insurance, but I used a voucher towards payment which means I ain't covered... then I go to buy one and realise arghhh swine flu !
:(

“People have asked me about sex in Bang Kwang, and whether sex and rape were regular occurrences, as they are within many Western prisons. I have to say that it isn’t the case. Thais frown heavily on rape, and are not tolerant of homosexuality.
There was a pig farm in Bang Kwang. Thai prisoners worked on the farm for a pitiful wage, but had learned of a way to supplement their income. For a few packets of cigarettes, a Bang Kwang pig would “love you long time”. Many Thais partook of this service, but the foreigners found it naturally repulsive.
The amusing thing was that, to Thais, the fact that you were having sex with a pig did not mean that you had to abandon your heterosexual tendencies. Sex with a male pig cost 2 packets of cigarettes; the price of sex with a female pig rose sharply to 5 packets. Presumably, for a few more packets you could pick between a wider variety of female pigs. After all, you wouldn’t want to get an ugly one.”
I guess the question about where swine flu could have evolved has probably been answered...

Interesting story - I think it shows just how skewed their values are though, if beastiality is ok but homosexuality is not.
Pow Pig, I hope there's no online version of the Swine flu though, otherwise I think you're in trouble!

Nah tam, I'm safe - I have virus protection!
This book and others like it should replace the Bibles in the drawers in Thai hotels to serve as a stark reminder to anybody thinking of carting smack back to Aus or anywhere else for that matter. To end up in a Thai prison for years would be a fate much worse than the firing squad IMO...

But Fellows and his partner in crime Paul Haywood (ex rugby league player with the Newtown Jets and Neddy Smith's brother-in-law) were allegedly non-addicts when they did it for the money. Fellows did it several times, while Haywood was on his first international run.
Irony is both ended up junkies in prison, and Haywood ended up OD'ing back in Aus 3 years after his release.

we're thinking of headin to Mexico !!... no not crazy , was in the USNavy for a spell and got vaccinated against this bug... lookin like one of the few good things that came from the service now !!
Hairfarmr even the vaccination against regular flu only lasts one year it is not lifelong immunity. There is currently no vaccination available against H/G1 N1 (swine flu).
Already one serving marine is infected.
Tests have confirmed a US Marine has fallen ill with swine flu and about 30 other Marines he came in contact with have been quarantined, the US Marine Corps said.
The US Centres for Disease Control "confirmed one case of H1N1 here" at the marine base at Twentynine Palms in southern California, a statement from the base said.
"The Marine will continue to be treated as an outpatient and will remain isolated at his barracks. He is doing well, and his condition continues to improve," it said.

Stockpile but don't panic
Aussies urged to stockpile food, water after swine flu alert raised.

Where did you get that gem from???
Remember, we already have an epidemic and are listed on the WHO list graemlins/big_laugh.gif but that's for Whooping Cough, I don't see anyone panicking over that one???
I just read the Egyptian government is seizing pigs in the country and slaughtering them (against advice from WHO and the farmers) geez some people do stupid things when they panic!!!!
There is an article in the SMH about it BJ. It is actually in the Health Departments pandemic preparedness plan that you should stockpile enough food and water to survive for 14 days. A touch of overkill in this case I believe. It was written for a worse case scenario where the WHO is reacting to a fast moving escalation of a potential pandemic. This one is glacial in real terms.

Are you sure it's in Australia??? I've spent all morning searching for it and just found it, but saying it was advice given to Australians in MEXICO CITY!!!!

BTW, reading the news and this sort of thing is what really causes problems...
In Mexico City, mobile health clinics have sprung up to deal with people who feel sick.
One caravan is parked near the historic city centre and hundreds of people, including Jessica Avanto, have lined up to see the doctor. Yeah, that't great... so panicking over reacting parents take little johnny who only has a normal cold or a tummy ache down to line up in a panicking crowd of people, some of which probably do have Influenza A H1N1... the name it's got now because stupid people were going and killing every pig in sight.
The whole article is worth a read. (http://abc.com.au/news/stories/2009/05/01/2557709.htm?section=justin)
And yes aren't we always supposed to have a stockpile of food and water for storms/bushfires/blackouts and other natural disasters anyway???

Link to the SMH article. http://www.smh.com.au/national/plan-says-to-stockpile-but-officials-say-dont-panic-20090430-ap01.html
And yes BJ we live in a tough country we are supposed to have an emergency stockpile.

Thanks for the link, I didn't know of that news site. I was only reading news.com.au and ABC.
I think they need to put a greater effort into screen incoming passengers, where there is a REAL risk, and forget about the panic merchanting for the average resident.
You know, the old Maxim, prevention is better than cure???

Now the official line is don't panic (but we don't have enough antivirals) and don't stockpile!!!
Health Minister says no cause to panic. (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,25413428-29277,00.html)

Well it's a level 6 pandemic now :/
Influenza pandemic alert raised to phase 6
11 June 2009 -- On the basis of available evidence and expert assessments of the evidence, the scientific criteria for an influenza pandemic have been met. The Director-General of WHO has therefore decided to raise the level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 5 to phase 6. "The world is now at the start of the 2009 influenza pandemic," she said at a press conference today.Source: http://www.who.int/en/
