O.k. so this may be way off base , but there is talk around town that the quad will fire up to mid station this weekend. I think it will be worth checking the Perisher site tomorrow/friday.
As I say it is just what is going around town .
ohhhhh, I love a good rumor graemlins/cold.gif

is there any more natural snow coming soon frog?
Somewhere around the 23rd May? Maybe
yeah I heard the same rumour.. they had every intention of opening for a stint but apparently they changed their minds as there was something relatively important scheduled for this weekend within the company.. however I heard they maybe following through with a promotional weekend the 9th and 10th.. but again, this is just the talk I've heard around town.

at least they are using the recent falls as a base for the upcoming season, considering the fact that they have fired the guns to keep it there.
"Snowmaking Kick-Start!
Cold overnight temperatures (as low as -8.3°C) and calm winds have allowed parts of Perisher’s new automated snowmaking system to be been fired up across Front Valley. At around 6.00pm on Wednesday 29 April 39 snow guns went into action. Perisher is the first of the Australian ski resorts to kick-start their snowmaking efforts this season and combined with the recent natural snowfalls (50cm), a good base can now be established ready for the 6 June Opening Weekend Celebrations.

As much as I'd love a pre season fix of snow sliding, I think I'd prefer they consolidated the base with plenty of snow making etc

Despite how early it is in the year, any resort that does not seriously consider consolidating the base and attempting to keep it, will in the end lose out. Good on to Perisher smile.gif

If it aint gonna snow for another month I think consolidating this snow is either a waste of diesel, or good only for a weekend of opening like this weekend.

Start next week.
Have they all forgotten that it is still April?

Its nothing like that.
Its just got above zero for the first time in 5 days or so.
Its been neg 10 some nights.
Thats cold cold. Thats lowered the temp of the snow way down. making it last longer
Our way of thinking has been too influenced by the conditions of the past five years or so.
SW change..dump...get warm...

Donza, there needs to be another 24 odd cold cold nights (and days) to keep this snow in place (assuming it snows late May, not a certainty), and no rain. It could happen, but the chances of this snow and whatever they make still being there, I would think it is unlikely. The snowmakers might have been called for training on the new system???

Its not unlikely in the slightest. The temps we are seeing are consistent with mid winter.

You make and wale snow and it will stay far far longer.
I think they are super serious about projecting a image to encourage bookings.
Thats an image of lifts and terrain open.

i think theyll project that image to most un snow savvy people...
but its a cold snap... i cant see it staying
yea its cold.. and yea its helping to cool the ground.. so what we get later has a better chance of staying.. but lasting a month and a half? i think not..
even IN season... a month and a half with no new snow and it goes to crap... let alone the possibility of rain.
id love it to stay... but unfortunately.. its very unlikely :(

We have 37 days till the start of the season.
I think its way too early to get excited or stressed out about snow.
Its good having an early season dump, but there will warmer days & rain events happening during May, and with a freeze/thaw cycle, my prediction, Spring Conditions for the opening weekend. :D

The pitiful amount they had at QBW 2006 lasted a damn fair while.
I still think people are thinking of this in terms of a typical season.
Whose to say its going to be typical?
We had crazy summer conditions in Vicco/SA this year. The extreme bushfires were in no way typical.

Donza definitely has the clincher point here, if we were talking about the snow that is not going to be supplemented by snow making, everyone else would be absolutely correct, but we are talking specifically about whether the snow-making Perisher is doing now, will have a positive effect on the amount of snow in those areas in June.
Now from the looks of it, we have had a large amount of snow with very cold temperatures during and for almost a week after the event allowing for snow-making over a number of nights and a thorough freezing of the base. So now we are off to a great start, and even though there may be 'some' periods of 'warmer' temperatures or 'rain', the snow that has already been made coupled with the expected normal amounts of snow-making done in May should quite readily see us through to June at least in some extent. This would only be compromised if those periods of 'warmer' temperatures became much longer than normal and that 'rain' came in more unusual amounts. These factors are less likely to occur than the normal pattern of weather and so we are not including them in our hypothesis of what will happen to our precious snow.
Another important point in my opinion is the fact that Perisher is charging a fair bit of money to it's customers and I am quite happy to see it being used in a way that may benefit them. Now there is the slight chance that Perisher has in it's employment, people much more knowledgeable than us about the topic and they know perfectly well that their snow-making will do absolutely nothing but they are doing it anyway, just for publicity. But the fact is, I reckon that Perisher is employing people quite knowledgeable in the art of snow-making and I am fairly certain that they would not be willing to use such large amounts of money on it if they thought it wouldn't do anything.

they snow make pre season every year...

late may though
the key might be looking at the forecast. this high might be around for a couple of weeks, giving clear cold nights for a while. Remember last year, perisher looked at the longer range forecasts around the end of may and got a week of snowmaking in before anyone else, and before they normally do. in the end it paid off - the forecasts were right, and the first weeks of june were terrible for snow and snowmaking, meaning the snow perisher made early meant they had a run open when no one else did.
I think perisher have seen that the next 2 weeks they might have the opportunity to make snow on quite a few nights, and in doing so will make almost certain that they will have some terrain open on the long weekend... its paid off for them at least once before, and this time they are starting with 50cms on the ground.
now as we all know it won't matter, because of the 2 metres that will fall on June 1...

Just because 50cm fell doesn't mean there is a 50cm base, far from it. Perisher has always started snowmaking just before the other resorts and always seem to have front valley skiable before anyone else has runs open.
A massive slow moving high will dominate the weather over the SE of Oz over the next two-three weeks which will see fine sunny days and cool clear nights.

yeah thats 53.9cm of light snow, throw in a bit of melting and compaction and you will be lucky to get half that as a base probably only a 1/4.
the snow is holding up well cause of the cool temps, when we get the warmer winds off the back of this huge high the snow will suffer.

I read about the method they use for Spencers Ck somewhere once (wish I could remember where) and they do actually compact the snow down before to get a measurement of the consolidated snow base.
As for the high, every time I look at it on the charts it is sitting just over the top of us or slightly to west (good for a cooler airstream)and just appears to be staying put for days on end. To me looks like a while before the days will start to be affected by much warmer winds.

Hotham is holding up well still under cloud cover, but Thredbo is showing signs of some compaction.
Just 1.4C in Thredders at the moment with 22kmh WNW breeze. Not as warm as it will get just yet, but the rocks in the Basin are starting to poke through, the snow on Merritts is starting to look a little creamy, and Friday Flat is turning browner as the day goes on...
Oh well, was good to look at while it lasted. Let's hope it looks even better soon...

Now that Perisher's snowmaking program has officially commenced it is expected that the guns will operate at every available opportunity. Positive long-range weather forecasts indicate that above average snowfalls can be expected this winter.
Your words Paul? Taking over frogs job of forecasting? ;)

I for one am somewhat relieved the snow has melted, as that means the annual girls weekend for opening weekend can go ahead as planned ie drinking! It's the only weekend for the whole season I really over do it, if the snow had hung around it would have messed with those plans!
I like your attitude pods!

I think Perisher should have a portable rope tow set up on it for $5 a ride untill the season proper starts tongue.gif ;)
