View Full Version : Snowy Trip 22-24 Jan 2009

Decided to have another crack at Mt Townsend since the weather stopped our last attempt at New Years. Took Friday off work and booked in to Stillwell lodge at Charlotte Pass. The plan was to walk out Fri morning and do the Main Range walk (clock wise) and set up camp around Wilkinsons or just above Lake Albina, walk up Mt Townsend the next morning and then head off back to Charlotte’s again.

Thursday 22 Jan

Went in to work early to be able to get away at a decent time and ended up getting a 4.00pm train home. Left Woonona at 5.45pm and headed over the mountain and on to the Hume.
Cruise control on 115 km/h and push the CD button on the stereo to see what’s been left in the player….

…One time you were my little chicken
Now you’ve grown into a fox
Once upon a time I was your little rooster
But now I’m just one of your cocks…….

Aaahh, Stones Biggerbang and Roughjustice, this CD will easily kill the first hour of driving while Little Swede’s busy playing Nintendo.
Stopped at Exeter’s Maccas and got some dinner and spent the next 20 minutes concentrating on driving, eating burgers, chips and not spilling TOO much in the car.
Marulan, Goulburn, Lake George and then it was like driving in to a big black wall. The rain was coming down at us horizontally and in such quantity I had to pull over and stop, you couldn’t see the front of the car. Thunder, lightning and howling wind, the worst downpour I’ve ever seen. Luckily it only lasted a few minutes and we could slowly continue on.
Stopped and got petrol, drinks and some Chupa Chups at the Hume petrol station outside Canberra.
Michelago, Bredbo, Cooma, Berridale, could probably close my eyes and still make it down.
10.15pm, over the little hill, small left turn and we can see the Jindy lights from the other side of the lake. Well, I can, Little Swede’s been asleep since Canberra.
Drive through Jindy and am getting prepared for the onslaught of wildlife that will face us the rest of the way up to Perisher, and it doesn’t take long before it all begins. Just in to the 100 zone a HUGE wombat crosses the road, the biggest ******* I’ve ever seen. Passed the Thredbo river the rabbits are running wild and just passed the National Park entry station the roos are out in force. Another wombat is waddling alongside the road just before Ski Riders and then a whole heap of roos and rabbits again. Then it’s quiet till we pass Perisher Valley where the rabbits are out I force again.
Pull up at Stillwell lodge spot on 11.00pm. Get Little Swede in to bed, carry a few things up to the room and it’s time to pour a couple of big ones of these and relax…

Friday 23 Jan

Woke up at 6.15am and the wind was still howling outside. Got the gear ready, had a nice brekkie, got Sal and Evan to check the weather forecast for us and it didn’t look too bad, possible showers and thunder storms and easing off early Saturday.
Started our walk from Charlotte’s at 9.00am and headed out the Mai Range walk (clock wise).
Little Swede’s always happy to show she’s a Snowatcher…

The weather was fine but you could already see some alarming clods over the range, Mt Lee and Caruthers peak…
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/Ecka_Swede/s61.jpg

Got to the Snowy River crossing at about 10.15am and stopped for a well deserved break out of the wind and fuelled up on some chocolate, nuts and water…

Got to Seamans Hut at 11.15am and the wind was absolute Gail now…

Little Swede signed the guest book and we had some fruit and water…

As we had a nice break at the Hut the weather deteriorated rapidly and when we walked out the wind was nearly blowing Little Swede over and you could hardly see a thing. If it wasn’t for the road you would have to rely on Compass or GPS to navigate. We headed up to Rawson’s pass where we got to check out the new facilities, gee that’s an improvement on the old portable toilets stuck in the middle of everything up there. Great work NPWS.
Got this shot as the clouds and mist cleared for a few seconds…
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/Ecka_Swede/s68.jpg

Had some lunch at Rawson’s and by now the wind was even stronger, visibility worse and it was also a bit of rain in the mix. We kept walking and met a few people all telling us it was even worse along the ridge towards Caruthers. As we got to Muellers Pass we (I) decided it was time to cut our losses and turn around since I had to literally hold on to Little Swede so that she wasn’t blowing off the mountain. Decided to head back below Seamans Hut somewhere for our camp.
We ended up down between Seamans hut and the Snowy river and it was still extremely windy, don’t know how we managed to get the tent up. Little Swede did a great job helping out, I was pretty sure we’d have to continue back to Charlotte’s there for a while.
Just as we had the tent up after 4.00pm a thunderstorm came through with pelting rain and we managed to get all the gear in to the tent in time, just.
The GPS said we’d done 17.6 km today, not bad for a Little Swede. Thanks for your great efforts and Help!!
Time to crack open the peanuts, pour a sturdy whiskey and read a bit of Occy’s auto biography…
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/Ecka_Swede/s69.jpg

When the rain eased I dug two toilets in case they would be needed during the night. Rather dig some at 5.00pm that will never be used than having to dig one at 3.00am in howling wind and pelting rain.
Had some Thai chicken curry for dinner washed down with a lovely red wine, orange juice for Little Swede. Spent the rest of the night reading and playing UNO and mighty have downed a whiskey or two.
At about 5.00am another thunderstorm went through with rain sounding like hail and wind pulling the tent in all directions. The lightning made it look like it was in the middle of the day and full sunshine at times. Geee I’m glad we’ve got some good gear.
6.30am ad it’s pea soup fog, can’t even see the hand in front of you, 7.30 am and the fog is gone but still low clouds ripping through the valley. 9.00am and the clouds are blowing away and at 10.00am it’s pretty much clear, but still very windy.
Probably could have had a crack at Mt Townsend today if we would have pushed on yesterday. But hey, when it comes to spending time in the mountains I’d rather regret turning back than regretting NOT turning back. The mountain will still be there tomorrow and you can always have another go, it’s also another good reason to head back down the mountains soon.

Looking out the tent we had the Snowy river one direction and Twynam and Little Twynam the other…

We packed up camp and left about 11.30 am. Little Swede did a great job holding up the tent in the wind as I was getting the pegs out…
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/Ecka_Swede/s73.jpg

We had some lunch on the way back and Little Swede admired the views…

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/Ecka_Swede/s75.jpg

We got back to the car at 1.00pm and the GPS reading was:
Trip: 22.8 km
Moving average 3.9 km/h
Moving Time: 05:52:15

Headed down to Perisher for a toilet stop and to get some fresh water. Decided to go for a hike and look at the progress of the new snowmaking on Mt P, looks like they’ve still got a bit of work to do on Towers…

Looks like the pipes are already down all the way up to mid station and the connection points are ready for the guns to be mounted…
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/Ecka_Swede/s80.jpg
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/Ecka_Swede/s81.jpg

A bit more snow needed before we can ski down to the double chair…
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/Ecka_Swede/s82.jpg

And a bit of grass showing on Olympic and Sun Valley…
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/Ecka_Swede/s83.jpg

Hard to believe this is where we’ll be lining up in about 5 months…
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/Ecka_Swede/s84.jpg

And someone has a big job putting all these back on…
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/Ecka_Swede/s85.jpg

After that we headed back home and are now planning the next trip down the mountains. Think we’ll have to have a serious go at those trouts next time.
Well if someone is still reading, that’s it, and have a good one!!

Thanks Swede and Little Swede. You two have really hit some horrid weather on the last two trips! It's just beautiful here now. I so admire your adventurous spirit. Fingers crossed for the next trip.....third time lucky maybe? :D

what a lucky little girl to have such great experiences.
How were the wildflowers up there Swede? Are they out in bloom yet?
When we were there last March we had just missed them, with seed heads everywhere and we are hoping to get back for the best of them this Feb..... smile.gif

err tambo, those yellow things are wildflowers ;) I'd say they would all still be out, or most anyway

A lot of the alpine bushes lower down are out in full bloom and very nice at the moment.

Great report, I must say, the lightening was crazy, and I was inside a snug apartment at Thredbo!

Hope one day you get to do something overseas in the deep powder.

Keep it coming!

Thanx Skijackski, I used to live in Cham, so have had my share of pow and steep skiing. But will definitely get Little Swede over there when she's ready, still have friends over there.

It was a hard enough job pulling them off, I can tell you that. Very heavy Chairs to push and stack.
