View Full Version : The Tahoe Snowatchers Thread Jan/Feb 2011

As a few snowatchers are now in Tahoe, I thought I'd start a thread.

Fyi, Kirkwood has $US45 day tix - but (grrrr) you need to print a coupon from www.snowbomb.com. axi and I are seeing the Snowbomb man on Saturday because he wants o/s skiers accessing his deals. And Sierra has a $35 'lift rental and lesson' deal. Both are an hour's drive from Heavenly.

Taxi and I today did gs race gates on the most amazing surface. The snowpack was silky smooth like talcum powder. In the afternoon I skied the mountain with the Masters/Race Dept. Our coaches were coaches in 3 Olympics and 2 World Cups and following them around Squaw is like doing a skier-cross course. Squaw is simply an amazing bunch of peaks.

We are doing slalom gates tomorrow morning, then skiing the hill in the afternoon with about 15 locals who are in the Masters Program. We get to meet great people, and ski terrain we wouldn't know existed.

I'd love to post pics but my camera was wrecked when we were drinking $2 PBR-brand beer. So take care with their cheap drinkies!

Have fun.

Today we raced slalom gates with video analysis from super-coaches. We've never done that before, and they uum promised not to post us on youtube. (Hmm, I better google 'world's worst slalom skiers' to see if we're famous)

Then they made us ski past a bear cave to georgeous red rock formations peppered by these massssssive things they called moguls. We are well and truly bugga'd.

Today we check out the Daron Rahlives Banzai race: a schuss from Alpine Meadow's crevase down a run to the Day Lodge. Yes, it's insane.

Vet
23-01-2011, 03:08 PM
Awesome day at Alpine Meadows. We met up with the owner-manager-family of 600 acres of Squaw, a manager at Alpine Meadows, and folks running the largest discount online lift ticket company for the US. We watched these crazies hurtle down a mountain in 1 minute 9 seconds as they competed for a $10,000 prize. And we toured the mountain with complimentary lift passes with the owner's manager.

We move to Heavenly tommorrow night - after freeskiing Alpine Meadows again.

Taxi has photos.

Shoes, clothes, sunglasses, - still eyeing off a pair of pants, but need to do some shopping without children.

Noticed I-hop, same as SC, what is it???

Thinking Mia Mafioso and I will take tomorrow off, we haven't done a lot of riding, but I think it may be needed. Still not sure, see what we feel like in the morning.

Vet

Funny you mention I-hop coz I took Taxman to the Ihop tonight. The ambience was enhanced with 1970s classics.

Even took a pic of him next to the 'all you can eat for $4.99' sign.

He had the lo-cal burger though. Piker! He liked it. It looked like a decent non-greasy burger too.

I sampled the all you can eat pancakes + sausages, bacon, eggs and hash browns. Good solid food imo.

A lil bit of Americana culture.

Loks like SC & Tribe, Taxi and I will catch up tommorrow morning at 10am at Stagecoach lift.

Vet

Got your pm. Sounds great. It will take you a while to get across to Nevada, especially if you don't schuss down the long flat access trail. Would you prefer to meet up at East Peak Lodge at the bottom of Comet and Dipper Chairs?

Vet
24-01-2011, 04:31 PM
I-hop is an all you can eat iconic American institution (near Ski Run and Tahoe Blvd) with booths (a la the Diner in "Bones" on TV). Its dated in the decor but its just good solid food at bargain prices .... and pancakes. (On 1st march you eat free and they ask that you donate to a charity they support. Talk about trusting). Nothing pretentious at I-hops, just umpteen types of omlettes, bacon and eggs, and steak dishes averaging about $10-$12 a meal.

Podlettte
24-01-2011, 04:37 PM
yeah we enjoyed it when we were there, something weird happened, probably the portion sizes (yet again) BH might remember......

there's an irish pub in the street behind (heading towards the lake) the incomplete entertainment centre, the big unfinished thing (if it still is) opposite the gondola area and right before the start of the casino's. Nice food, small, cosy (very hot inside) atmosphere.

Late yesterday I tried to ski out and back in to our place perched above Stagecoach & Boulder Lifts. Getting down was easy on 'firm' pocked snow. Getting back was something else. Firstly I couldn't find our knoll so I tried several in a row. Finally I found ours, skied down to neighbours sitting in their hotub, then down this icy hard pocked stuff to our carpark. Maybe I should just take the shuttle bus today :)

We'll be back there, and Alpine Meadows too.

After another amazing blue bird (but cold) day on amazingly groomed slopes at Heavenly, our crew went to an awesome 'all you can eat for $25' Japanese food place, 'Sushi Pier'. Talk about feeling 'full'.

Thursday we hit up Homewood - a place Taxman and I were really surprised by.

Friday will be packing up, and a ski with Boarding bunny's crew, followed by a charity dinner with people from Stanford Uni et al.

Saturday will be the Snowbomb/Start Haus/Rahlves Banzai at Kirkwood, then a dash to Reno for a flight on Saturday night in LA.

Sunday might be lunch somewhere with pals in LA.

I accept Medicare cards :)

Bartonhealth are towards your end of town, treat US racers, and are excellent (though they used an olde fashioned X-Ray on Lil Vet for microfractures which won't show for weeks).

Call your travel insurer first for approval, then take him to the doc, and keep receipts. Importantly they'll check his vision. He fell downhill, splat, at high speed onto his face so the jarring could jar retinas. His left lower eye socket rim was impacted - his goggles and helmet were knocked off him.

When he's better, he and I can go punch out some US speeding drunk drivers.

Just on the phone to insurance now. Cover is confirmed... Gosh I feel much better now.

Im on hold to speak to the Registered Nurse. Have to get him reviewed by a doctor in 5 days, which is also covered. I reckon he'll be ok'd there and we can ski for the last week. We shall see

Anyone know of a private doctor in the area. Must be time to visit the visitor centre

I reckon Im pretty happy with our $350 worth of skiing. We've had 8 days on snow so far :)

That's great news BB. I'm glad it's all covered. There's nothing more frustrating than paying for insurance for them to only do backflips to get out of it. Fingers x for one more week of skiing for him :-)

hey BB, sad to hear of little Zac. Our master busted his leg this trip skiing, insurance claim is currently in at $9.5K !!! I feel your pain.

Hope he fires up and is fine, happy skiing.

O BUGGGER! Master Dad? or Master Son?

Sorry to hear that as well, atleast we know it will only take a week or so to settle things down. Keep in contact, let me know how he is doing, be it Hubby or son.

Are you home yet or still away? Isnt it just devastating, it takes a few days to think clearly!

Crystal

yeah i feel your pain...it really throws things up in the air. But things will work out, a few days of rest and doing tourist things and you can hit the slopes again.

Master was Seth, we managed to score a cool nannie from Texas so we continued to ski after the initial 2 days, he loved her and would cry when we came in early from skiing as he wanted her to stay. Video games, board games, DS, movies, crap food and not to mention she would take him out and carry him around the village. He is a small fry as you know so she managed quite well :D

We are home now and cast comes off in 6 days. He did it Jan 4th in ski school !!!. Lucky it was mid way through the tip as we were could not fly for minimum 10 days after it was set.

We'll have to organise a joint trip sometime soon and the boys can race each other through the parks.

Some are forecasting snow for the weekend thru to tues, some are forecasting monday thru thurs.... So we hope the earlier storm comes thru... YAY, Wouldnt mind some fresh snow...

Crystal, where did you go this season?

We have a week left here then over to Disneyland, so are slowly starting to make sure we can find everything we bought and to check that we can fit it in the bags! We have already bought an extra case....

WOW!!

Started getting some snow today, only little bits, but enough to get us excited.

Was very very windy today, so much so Monster was blown up slope along the cat track to the right of Stagecoach (towards East Peak), I think there was maybe 5 lifts open for both sides of the mountain.....

We stuck to stagecoach, but even we were blown around. So off the mountain and went shopping... again

More snow due in the next couple

Lol @ Monster.

Don't forget that Northstar (like Homewood) is usually fully operational when the rest are on wind hold. (And Homewood has $25 and $12 adult and kids tix on Thursdays (and maybe Tuesdays: Skichic has the details) for those with season passes for Heavenly & other resorts).

I'd have to say Sunpeaks has a very similar feel to skiing BW, same sort of hill, activites, terrain and accom.

Nice Xena Nice...

Well it has started snowing.. A little late I must say. We leave here on friday morning and its now meant to snow through the weekend :(. Im very tempted to delay leaving, skipping vegas and a day of Disneyland, just so we can get some tracks.....

How annoying. However the dusty grey black chunks of snow along the roads are now covered and my holiday looks like I expected.

Nice BB. We copped quite a snow dought, but at least it is finally breaking. Watch the traffic on Hightway 50 on the way out; 2 years ago Vet & I took about 3 hours to drive 65 miles from Colfax to Tahoe Vista in a snowstorm. We saw plenty of carnage along the way.

Ah Vegas was a gift and hell I wanna do disneyland. However, I did check, we cant change flights and I am not driving 8hrs to LA... not to then fly for 15.

With the forecast being another 26+ inches before Friday, we have decided to stay in Reno tomorrow night - also we just spent an hour at the end of the street digging ourselves out...... they said 11cm..... and its about waist deep at the house...

Nar. Going pow hunting today :)

Thats enough, its been a long trip for little mister, especially considering he got hurt. Theres plenty more years of hunting to come. Monster is over it, sore and grumpy (as is husband). Mind you monster is out hunting powder with me today..

And I'm not willing to throw away the gift of accomodation in Vegas. Its a beautiful place (the Hotel) and we would just like to see it and explore.

I think if there hadnt of been the head hit, we'd be ok, but as for the timing (and being stuck non-skiing for 10days), its definately time to hit Disneyland.

but it did take almost 7 to drive back from Vegas to LA then fly straight home. Ahhhh the roads were carnage as it took just over 4 hrs to drive from LA to Vegas
