Fyi Amex has 10,000 bonus points for new travel insurance policies,

... and Velocity will add 25% IF Amex allocates your bonus points by (I think) 30 Novembeer and IF you roll them into Velocity by Velocity's deadline.

Of course, make sure the policy is the best for you.

PS: Its underwritten by Allianz Aust and Mondial Assistance handle the claims. Allianz/Mondial flew me back 1st class when I twisted my knee 'no questions asked' under a tid.com.au policy, but someone here wasn't treated well when skis were stolen (if I recall correctly). Anyway, 10k of points can go a long way to a free flight so happy shopping.

I am in the market for a domestic travel policy, but it looks like it is only international. Silly thing is most gold cards have international insurance bundled.

Yep, its for international travel but you can get a starting date in 2011. I need a policy for the March/April 2011 trip because my tid.com.au policy runs out in March '11 - then again 3 o/seas trips for the family for $A400 was pretty good value.

As for rrelying on the free credit card policy, I tried to claim on Citi Plat/Zurich for medicals in the US and there was some loophole they relied on, so I used the Travel Insurance Direct/Mondial/Allianz policy for my and Lil Vet's injuries. Mondial paid up asap. I'm therefore wary of the free insurance in credit cards.

Or you can look at the offer as 'where can I spend $200 and get 10,000 points"? Everydayrewards only gives me 500 QFF points for $150 shop with the amex card. And 10,000 points + 2500 Velocity bonus points means, for me, Europe in 2013 will be a free family trip.

I have claimed twice on the Citibank platinum card free insurance (Zurich) successfully. Mind you, I did not have to change flights or big stuff like that - just medical costs, unused portions of ski passes, lessons, gear hire - about between $1 and $2K each time - ohh, and a lost camera.

I'm using a prepaid car rental with no excess insurance and $1m of 3rd party injury and 3rd party property in case I get sued by the other driver. CC policies don't cover 3rd parties if they're injured whilst I'm driving a 'mechanically propelled vehicle'. So then i need medical/travel insurance but I can either hope the cc insurance pays up or I pay $400-$500 for an annual family frequent travel policy that has worked for 2 injuries (leg injury and Lil Vet's fractured face) and get 12500ff points that'll cover the March/April trip, NZ in 2011, and two trips to the US in 2012. I think I'll get the policy that I know works.

PS (10,000 'insurance' points + 25000 points under the Amex promo + $3000 normal points for mostly tax deductible expenses like phone and power bills etc) x 1.25 Velocity bonus = 47,500 points. That's half of a return fare to ski the US some time in the future.

Cripes I better donate $20 to Taxman's charity ride, get 250 pounts and a $10 tax deduction too boot LOL

Maximising these bonus promos means anyone can get closer to o/s ski holiday. It might take years, but so does saving cash.

A return flight to LA on points is about 95,000 points. I can get almost half way there by 1) already being a member of VAustralia's Velocity program and Amex's Membership Rewards program, 2) accepting Amex's invite to join the Amex hopscotch promo, 3) buying , in $20 increments, $2k of groceries or office supplies until 28/11/10, 3) receiving 250 points per $20 (or higher) purchase, and 4) transferring the Amex points by 30/11/10 to Velocity. That's 25000 of Amex bonuses + $2000 of normal purchase points. 5. Velocity are running a 25% bonus offer. By putting the 27k of Amex points there, that = 33k of Velocity points for use on the Virgin group tto the US (or Europe etc). And if I get the Amex annual frequent travel policy, there's another 10,000 bonus points which become 12500 Velocity points if rolled into Velocity by 30/11/10. TTotal 45,500 points which = half of the 94,000 ppoints needed for a return ticket one day. Iiirc we have, by grabbing these promos, enough points for o/s ski trips a year to the US or Europe until 2016, just by buying things we normally do like postage stamps, groceries, petrol etc.

We've also converted our Woolies card to the scheme where you get Qantas points instead of points for their petrol. So $100 of groceries bought on Amex becomes 70 QFF points and 100 Amex points. Those Amex popints can be rolled into QFF or, if I roll tthem into Velocity, I get 125 Velocity points whilst also having 70QFF points. Its like geting paid twice, or like having your cake and eating it too.

We get email invites to spend $150 this week for 350 QFF points, 150 Amex points (which become 187 Velocity points under V's 25% bonus promo). Or Dick Smith might give 700 points if you buy a laptop. That's 700 towards QFF and the cost of the laptop is say $600 of Amex points which can be 600 QFF or 600 Velocity points. Ergo 1 new laptop earns 1200-1300 of points toward a flight. (And if you can claim the laptop on tax, terrific).

If I pay my 2011 ski accom at Buller on amex and roll the points into Velocity by 30/11/10, there's another top up towards o/s skiing.

It all adds up.

And if you don't have enough points for a totally free trip, the airlines will allow the points to be applied as a discount to the fare.
