View Full Version : thefts from lodges
Who on earth would knick Mrs Vet's very old Rossignol Bandits and a "Force" brand ski bag? Anyway, Buller's Police will be visiting lodges to chat about security.
The Australian Hotels Association says that any establishment offering food, drink and sleeping arrangements will soon be liable to guests whose gear 'goes missing'. The liability is to be up to $2000 per guest. Hopefully that prompts a few places to alter keycoded access numbers more regularly, sign in visitors, and provide lockable cages lest clothes, boots and skiis 'disappear'.

Stupid question-
What is the best way to lock your gear up? We stay at Falls Creek Country Club where there is a massive room for storage however I have thought about how easy it would be for our gear to go missing.
Just bought new board/bindings/boots for me + skis/bindings etc for the +1 and I would be spewing if they went missing.

To compound matters, the lodge has the same door code all season so anyone of the groups of 'guests' could come back anytime, access the 'hidden' store room, and walk out without passing a soul.
Also the manager prefers to leave the door to the hidden room unlocked.
Anyway, the door will be pad locked by the weekend.
Hey Hairfarmer, I called snowbomb but their credit card facility isn't accepting non-US/Canadian payments over the phone or on the 'net. I might need to borrow your card to get the 25% discount on rental phats. Or maybe Mrs Vet will use my old K2s so I can buy something phatter???? ;)
PS: They know you're the reason why Aussies are trying to get snowbomb cards. I hope they give you a payrise! tongue.gif

To lock my gear i just brought a simple one from Bunnings. Its a metal rope with plastic over it. For bikes probably. Then i just run it through my binding on skis and my partners. Cost $8.
We were in the bar at Blue Cow, we all left late, walk to get gear and my friend with Hire gear - gone. Crap old hire skis - Mine and partners where still there with my $8 lock. (only other pair there)
Im sure it wont stop someone determined but majority or theft is just opportunistic. I even lock them up in the car at night. Crazy i know but i have woken to see some people windows smashed and gear stolen.

I think i might go to Bunnings and get a small bike chain,
I got new board and bindings this year and last year I had hire gear and everytime would stop in at mid station or in the pub I would try and watch my hire board all the time and my mate was like dont worry everyone leaves there stuff there it wont get nicked and I am like but how easy would it be to steal a board or ski's

Wow, I am so naive. I thought in the "ski community", this sort of thing didn't happen because everyone was in the same boat. I think I might invest $8 in a bunnings lock!

Depends how nice your gear is, i brought some nice gear for myself and wife and like to keep it.
Even in Japan at Harifu backpackers a guys board was stolen from the drying room (very nice board). It happens everywhere and guess what - i had my little $8 lock on and all was safe and sound.
I don't recommend a chain - bit hard on gear or combination lock - they are easy to crack or a bit bulky for the good ones. The one that have is for bikes. Comes with 2 keys, clicks in.
Put the second key in a safe place...... At the snow fields ahha no good at home.

Had a 3 pairs of skis stolen from our car (at the Jindabyne Hotel) back 1981 (very annoying during an epic season) - one pair of Blizzards with Salomon 555, one pair of Dynastar Omnisofts with Salomon 767 bindings and one pair of Fritzmeyer Duo with Geze bindings. Didn't care about the Duos as they had totally delaminated after landing a few too many jumps that day, but the
Dynastars were brand new had only one day's skiing on them.
Lesson learned; weasels have always existed.
Vet, happy to give Mrs Vet my old Volkl AC3s (170cm), but I fear they may be a little too much ski for her. And no, I'm not giving you my Stormriders, although I'll bring them down for the Team Challenge for you.

what lenth were the bandits??
They were about 165-170 I think. She loved them because they were barely parabolic.

Then again, Red's got 170cm Stockliis and he's coming to Buller this weekend. Memo to self: pack bolt cutters. tongue.gif

My advice is not to leave anything of value in your room unattended.. most cleaning staff (if not all) are seasonals.. therefore imo can't be fully trusted. No offense intended for those members or guests who are employed this season as cleaning staff. It's just that in the past few years I'm more than well aware of a few dodgey cleaners that do more than just pick up dirty towels off a floor when servicing a room. It really angers me that not enough is done about it when the guest lodges a complaint or files a lost item report

I'm amazed - I'm glad I've read all this, I suppose I've been really lucky. Definably buying myself a little chain! What about Ski boots? Do they ever go for a little walk out of drying rooms?
Yes, Snowie Meli. A club has a sign at the moment - someone's hoping a guest returned the wrong boots to a hire place.

I just use a burton boardlock. It can be easily cut or broken but it definitely is a huge deterrent.
Better safe than sorry ;)

It’s worth being vigilant where ever you are. Three weeks ago at Hotham a bloke had bought new skis from Hotham central, skied a couple of hours then headed to his lodge for lunch. He placed his skis in the racks on the side of a Hotham bus and when he got off they were gone (I always carry mine on the bus).
Last weekend at Hotham we stopped for a coffee at Snake Gully Hut a lady was searching for her ski's in the lift queue as they had disappeared. When ever we stop fro a break anywhere we always mix and match ski's, ie I take one of my wife's and she take one of mine and we keep a large distance between them (that way they are useless to the thief).

I wish they usd ski key here
Skikey is in North America resorts ... can't cut it off, need to drill the lock to break it !!
Thieves will steal anything. After a long treadmill run at the gym (where I sweated bucketloads), went to the change room, nuded up and had a shower.
Came back a few mins later and my running shorts AND running top were gone?! I mean who steals SWEATY, SMELLY gym gear?! After that episode, I put everything in my locker when I have a shower.

Funnniest thing that we got stolen..
A few years ago we were at Perisher for the Interschools, had to drive to Falls Creek after presentations. Jumped on the train, got in the car drove to falls creek.
Driving up to Falls Creek for some reason couldn't find my ski lock, then realised it was around 2 pairs of skis and poles on front valley!!! In our rush we'd forgotten we had downhill gear as well.
So I rang Guest Services, they said I can see your skis from here, so I gave them the combination for the lock... they rang back in a few minutes to say they had the skis, but no lock or no poles!!!!!!
How weird is that graemlins/big_laugh.gif

Classic BJ.
A mate lost his cheap & nasty skis out of the back of a covered ute in Jindy.
I remember when working front office in a certain hotel in Jindy one season a guest approched the desk and asked if he could discuss the matter of an unusual lost/stolen item from his room after it had been serviced by housekeeping... someone had nicked a substantial bag of weed that was hidden under the garbage bin liner in the bathroom of his appartment.. Poor bugger.. he felt really awkward bringing the matter to my attention and knew there really was jack I could do about it.. but it's the principal of the matter that really peeved me.. the invasion of privacy and lack of trust from staff.

That's a pretty dumb place to leave it, you could easily tip it out when legitimately cleaning the bin!!!

Never Ever report lost or stolen Weed... the cost of possible incarceration is much more expensive than another bag o Weed
Yeah - in Canada, someone stole my son's hired board and returned it to the hire place, because someone had stolen her sons! She thought she had reasonable justification. The thing that annoyed me is that the hire place wanted us to be responsible for having no board to return. Took a bit of Rumpelstiltskin-ing from me, but it got sorted out. In this day and age of barcodes, I didn't see how it wasn't obvious that our board HAD been returned and HERS had not.
p.s VEt, what does 'barely parabolic' mean? I know the word, but can't figure it out in reference to skis.
Taxman
16-07-2009, 09:03 AM
Xena, "barely parabolic" means the ski doesn't have a lot of side cut, i.e. it is straighter. Straighter skis don't carve so easily as they don't ride the side cut, however they are very easy to scarve and side slip (which us how most people ski anyway).

I was on the quad at PB one day and I got a phone call from the hire place in Jindy where I got my gear to say someone had brought back my ski's. I had ski's on!!!!!!!!!!! They suggested that I go to the Perisher centre and get them adjusted, which I did quick smart.

eewwee that's just creepy
Well the Police called about one solitary ski they found somewhere on the side of the Buller Road on 9th July. So the idjit can't even use them. And s/he hasn't got skiis that fit in the stolen ski bag.
