View Full Version : I'm pretty sure I've broken my knee
Attempted to clear the table top in the epic Thredbo RX course, plenty of speed, been riding it for weeks and felt in the zone.
PP inspiring me by hooking through the track and minutes earlier pulling her biggest air to date - a little out of control but settles mid air, lands on one ski, brings the other down and lays out a huge speed turn to ski away in control to the bewildered public and me - hooting.
So don't give me NPDH replies. :ninja:
Confident, I set myself for the down slope landing from take off, pop on launch and get good air but fall short and land front foot heavy before the transition (snowboarding) the outside of my leading knee takes all my weight and G force. I estimate about 250-300kg. Now I'm a strong bugger (I know my strength) and I controlled the landing but with what felt like my knee dislocating. More pain than tearing my calf in '08.
I collapse in pain, unable to speak or even whimper, almost into unconsciousness thinking about a ski patrol rescue. A minute later and a few deep breaths I spot PP 100m down hill telling me to hurry up! I tell her to wait. Another minute passes and the throbbing [I]starts to subside, I can sit up but don't want to. I'm gingerly moving toward PP to let her know I'm not good. Another minutes rest and I attempt to board - painful but I'm able to match PP's pace, finish he course and put in some nice controlled turns but don't push ANY limit.
After talking with knowledgeable persons the diagnoses seems to indicate LCL ligament damage but I feel the Fibula has impacted the Tibia and either bruised or fractured as well as damage to the corresponding collateral ligament.
It still hurts.

Far out man, hope it's better than you expect. Take yourself in for an xray and make sure you dont have permanent damage, that could screw you later in life.
Good luck man !

Not good at all fingers crossed its not that bad but I concur to getting it checked out by a Dr.
I will get an X-ray and I have it heavily strapped until that happens.
It wasn't to bad through the night (pain wise). As long as I don't bend it the pain is dull.
I have to drive PP back to Wollongong this arvo - luckily I know how to change gears without using the clutch. Thinking about driving is motivating me to go see doc hollywood this morning. Driving mightn't be possible.

Not good! Incidentally, my wife's sister fractured her tibia just below eagle's nest a couple of weeks ago during one of the gale days. Got a splint put on it and couldn't drive back to Sydney...I think she can now put some weight on it but yeah, maybe that's what you got...get it checked!!!
I went and had it checked out/Xrayed.
-No fracture :)
-I can drive :)
But...
-Torn/snapped ACL :frown:
-No skiing/boarding :frown:
-Reconstruction required :frown: $$$$$$
-Refund on season pass :) Thredbo dollars :frown:
-Heavy pain killers required :p:spin::cloud9:

Sorry to hear about your accident and a real pain ( literally) for you during the ski season!
Hope the op goes well and you have a speedy recovery also.
I like your positive attitude about getting the website finished...keep it up!
Thanks guys,
I didn't leave Thredbo today. Instead went to the top of Friday Flat and started building an igloo while PP did laps. Plan is to use this weeks snow to finish the roof and take/sell photo's of every person who rides EDI. My thought is 'who has a photo of themselves in an igloo?' I don't, but it would be cool! A shot you couldn't not buy. And I'm told the cost of surgery is more than 2X my car so I need to make some.
It attracted plenty of helpers and comments and was pretty fun. Or is that the Panodine Forte's veil of illusion.
Hit the road tomorrow and test my pain barrier as I wont be on those pain killers with my princess in the car. Doc says I can't damage it any more (unless I push my limits) but it will hurt.

Who cares if the fun of igloo building was fromt he pain killers - you had fun :-) and thats what matters and PP. And if you make some cash GREAT. I was really happen to hear about the camera gear showing up.
Can you sell the thredbo dollars (at a discounted rate?)
Good luck with the drive back to the gong.

Cripes! That must have been one heck of a painful stack. I hope you have a speedy recovery rednut.
Perhaps we should have an injuredwatch catch up at the pub. Byo panadine forte.
Stay safe snowlovers. By the way you all owe us big time for sacrificing our limbs to the snow gods. Two knees, a tibia and a thumb later Huey seems satisfied to deliver snow ;-)

Hehe, maybe.
Reading this really made me laugh tonight.
I finally got a second dose of pain killers into me since the injury. So hope it is as funny as I've found it.
To bad about Rednut and Coops - was hoping to get all the sympathy to myself. ;)
I do like the injuredwatch idea but with all the panadine forte how many beers do you think we will handle before falling off our crutches.
The drive was difficult but finally got PP to her mums. PP's sniffle should have been seen to by a Dr apparently. !??
Went and dipped my feet in the ocean, sat on the sand and listened to the surf.
MRI on Wed to find out how damaged the ligaments are.
Still think I can slide and keeping an eye on the storm front, getting excited about imminent snow - keep have to remind myself I'm done.
Guess I'm a sucker for punishment.

Go for it spaz (and make sure you have a slide for me). The damage is done. Have a chat to skijacski about which brace she used to ski out the season before having her reconstruction. Good luck with your MRI. Hopefully they find an incomplete tear and then you can rehab rehab rehab! Mine is three weeks today and feels as good as gold. Shame they are about to make it all stiff and sore again today but hey it's all about the long term. Good luck champ and I hope your igloo plans come to fruition.
