I know everyone is excitted by the upcoming snowfalls. But for those who aren't going I can provided a distraction.
Anyone want to tell me their secret recipes for Glühwein?
I am going to a farm for Christmas in July and want to make some.
Last time I made some I used a flavouring sachet that I got from the off licence in London. Sounds gross but the Glühwein was a hit!
Googling brings up some many different variations....

My girlfriend makes a gorgeous gluhwein however she is unwell in hospital at present so I unfortunately can't help you with her recipe.

isn't it just star anise, cinnamon sticks and nutmeg or something? Have never drunk it but love he smell.

When made correctly it is actually really good. Weirdly enough I remember it from my Childhood (hmmm what does that say about my childhood!)
Haven't heard of star anised or nutmeg.
Most recipes I have found have....
Water & Sugar (to make a syrup)
Oranges & Lemons, sliced
Cinnamon Sticks
Cloves
All Spice (Which I suppose has nutmeg in it)
Orange Juice

I have made it also with some slivered almonds and sultanas.
Don't know what I did different this year but last years was much much better.
oi vet! I'll thank you to know that I wash every other week and I shaved for summer!

Legs I was actually secretly counting on you!
Well I got the 'secret' recipe from the family friend who made during my childhood and it is not much different to the above except waaaay less sugar also only one clove and one cinnamon stick. This is for two bottles of wine. He also said that he used to make it with half red half white. Anyone else heard of that?
I am making it tonight at the farm - will be werid to head to Bowral but not keep driving to the snow.

I've not mixed the wines oz, but it sounds ok to me actually...would possible make it a bit fruitier and less tannic (I find once the red is cooked it gets quite bitter and strips your mouth a bit dry). BUT, if you're going to do that I'd definitely add less sugar.
Nice blustery night for it. cheers

Lots of red (the rougher the better, but it needs to be drinkable).
A few cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
One apple (cored & cut into chunks)
1/2 an orange & 1/2 lemon (same as you would in sangria).
Bring to the boil, light (and stand clear until the flame dies down - ps it is extremely volatile).
Get out a few mugs (or a couple of friends).

This thread reminds me of some big BBQs we had with our Italian relations in Mossvale. I have always called it mulled wine. We used to make it in huge ptos on a wood fire. The northern italians usually made it at festival / celebration times..so I was toldl . It had red wine , lemon, cinnamon stiicks, cloves and sugar! Drank warm. Yummy!

I knew star anise was wrong, was trying to pull All spice from the back of my brain.
yeah cloves and oranges go together as a natural pairing, so makes sense.
only way to know is to make it and if not right then experiment. I'm not a fan of the lemonade marmalade I made last week and just tried, way to sour for me, needed to add more sugar.

My secret tips - use brown sugar and caremelise it in the pot first. I dont use fruit bits as they can stew a bit and I put my oj in last for the same reason. I only use cinnamon and cloves, oj - no apples or lemons - and a reasonable red

It was delicious - mmmmm so easy to drink.
Eisbear tho the caramelising of the sugar sounds good.
Piston broke - it should never boil, that cooks out the alcohol.
