Just remember Manly lost their first two games last season. You don't win the comp in March. smile.gif

So do the roosters spiceman. An a no show to day. Where was the effort. Must have left it in the choock pen.

Spiceman
15-03-2009, 07:34 PM
Frog you are right about not winning the comp in March but I'm bloody happy that Souths have at least won a game in the first 8 rounds this year... Nice start but not getting carried away. I like that they kept their mouths shut all week because Souths hate the Roosters so it was a good win and the Roosters will be worried. The Roosters will either turn around and win next week or get massacred again...

SnowSnow
15-03-2009, 07:40 PM
Same I'm not to worried after 1st round. But if they don't turn it around quickly they can say goodbye 2009.

Yeah I noticed there was nothing on Stewart... it's almost like it's a non issue.. very interesting how it will pan out. If he's innocent, I'd be trying to sue the NRL for restriction of work or something like that..

...and I would prefer the NRL trophy to and A grade one or u/19 one.

And anyway there is no Manly A-grade side, just an A-grade competition made up of mostly Northern Beaches sides (e.g. Valley, Narrabeen, Narraweena, Beacon Hill, Avalon etc)

Broncos going a lot better than I expected.. isn't it amazing how a couple of close wins can build the confidence... StGeorge with the crappiest playing roster in years, showing some backbone in defence and toughing out wins... same attitude would have won them a couple of comps a few seasons ago... Bennett has definately had an influence and is doing well with very little IMHO.....

Cronulla are the disappointments given their roster and it seems they can't avoid controversy.

Bulldogs trying to outdo them:

Footy stars in public punch-up
By Josh MassoudThe Daily TelegraphMarch 30, 2009 04:17pm

RUGBY league club the Bulldogs are today investigating a punch-up between NRL stars Jamal Idris and Ben Barba on Saturday night.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal that the pair came to blows inside Wentworthville Leagues Club in Sydney' west during a night out with fellow teammates.

A witness said the tiny Barba – who stands at 175cm and weights only 83kg – shoved second rower Lee Te Maari up against a wall before Idris intervened.

Unperturbed by Idris’s 188cm, 106kg frame, Barba lashed out at the giant centre.

A shocked Idris then retaliated, leaving Barba with a bloodied nose.

The witness said the two players were asked to leave the premises immediately.

I'm bloody shocked after that cra*py effort tonight.

We (Manly) are gonna get beaten 36-8 by a heavily weakened Knights team next weekend at Newcastle unless Des and all the players start taking things seriously, snap out of it, and get some team cohesion and good sets of 6 completed on the field.

Come on boys, Geez.

The Frog
30-03-2009, 10:15 PM
Manly were lucky they weren't playing a decent side, they would have lost by 40.

Penrith were bad enough with the ball only completing 30% of their sets but Manly were below that at 23%. And the amount of penalties they gave away in the opposition 20m was a joke.

They are missing their best back three. Shane Neumann was hopelss with six erros, Bani not much better and Robertson ordinary at Fullback. I can't wait for both Williams to come back next week and then hopefully Brett Stewart the following week.

The season is not over by any means and they can still win the comp, they just need discipline in attack and around the ruck in defence.

Hopefully Jamie Lyons injury is not too bad either.

manly seem to the talk of the town in here. Might be too far gone now for them to be looking at the minor premiership? I reckon they'll be more fearful of losing again against the Tigers than they will be concentrating on playing disciplined league.

Great to see, with Snake scoring a triple of tries.
Certainly far from their brilliance of the last couple of months of the 2008 season, but a clear improvement on all efforts this year to date, and their first win of the season.

Manly's Brett Stewart out for eight to 12 weeks because of knee injury
By staff writers (news.com.au)
April 21, 2009

Manly have been rocked with the news today that fullback Brett Stewart will undergo a knee operation on Friday and will be out of action for eight to 12 weeks.

Stewart injured his knee in the second half of last Saturday's NRL match against South Sydney at ANZ Stadium - his second game in the premiership this season.

The injury initially wasn't considered serious but subsequent tests indicated it was similar to his knee injury in 2007 which required surgery.

Manly coach Des Hasler said the injury "was shocking luck for Brett but he is a strong character and will work hard on his rehabilitation and minimise his time on the sideline".

Hasler will decide on Tuesday night Stewart's replacement for Saturday's clash with the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville.

Winger Michael Robertson had the job in the opening month of the premiership and is likely to fill in again in Stewart's absence.

In the two matches Stewart has played since his return, he has scored five tries. This has coincided with Manly's only two wins of the season.Bugger, just when they were looking good.

Without Brett Stewart Manly can't score. They need a reshuffle as Robertson does nothing from the back.

1.Robertson - good finishing winger but has no impact as fullback
2.Williams - strong game and looks set to get rep jersey again
3.Lyon - tried hard with limited opportunities, defence strong
4.Matai - tried hard and made yards, tough in defence as per usual
5.Bani - looks like he doesn't know where to be in attack or who to take in defence, is too soft in defence and gets caught on the back foot too much
6.Bailey - does absolutely nothing in attack and needs to be replaced quickly, puts too much pressure on Orford by not giving a second option
7.Orford - tries hard but doesn't have anyone to finish off like a Brett stewart, kicking game was ordinary

Forwards weren't too bad although Watmough needs to make sure that if he is going to run up and hit hard he needs to make sure he gets his man. Too many missed tackles by him although he was strong when on the field.

Changes need to be made. Here is the side I would use:

1.William Hopoate (from leading Toyota Cup side)
2.David Williams
3.John Williams
4.Steve Matai
5.Robertson
6.Lyon (where he played when they won the GF)
7.Orford
8.Kite
9.Ballin
10.Perry
11.Watmough
12.Cuthbertson
13.Stewart

"Hunt out, Hodges in doubt for Brisbane
By Wayne Heming
AAP
The loss of star fullback Karmichael Hunt and serious fitness concerns over Test centre Justin Hodges could force Brisbane coach Ivan Henjak into a major back-line reshuffle before Sunday's NRL clash with a desperate Manly at Suncorp Stadium.

Hunt is battling a deep thigh cork and may even be a week or two off playing in a race to be fit for Origin, which begins in Melbourne in three weeks.

Brisbane have four players - Hodges, skipper Darren Lockyer, winger Israel Folau and City Origin halfback Peter Wallace backing up from Friday-night representative duties."

http://www.nrl.com/News/Latest/tabid/10244/default.aspx?id=54810

---

Hmmm, Karmichael Hunt & Justin Hodges are real big factors in this game for mine.

Until I heard this news about them, I was tending toward a Broncos win, probably by 12 or so.

But I also have a feeling the Sea Eagles are gonna put some good plays together on the field tomorrow.
Weather it will be enough, and they will score enough tries, we'll see.

None of the Sea Eagles in the rep games Fri night really shone greatly I thought, also - I didn't get the feeling that any of our boys were exhibiting signs of building into really good solid form as individual players anyway.
But of course, this may work well on the field for them come Sunday, as they may just be able to fire and string together some great teamwork.

Will even that be enough against an in-form broncos tho?

I'll prob tip against manly for the 3rd time this season, tomorrow.

A great 2nd-half gusty win to the (Manly) boys today - gotta absolutely love beating the Broncos anywhere, anytime!

But that first 30 mins on the field in the 1st half was pretty pathetic by the Sea Eagles.
I was starting to get a pretty nasty gut feeling as half time closed in.

But man, what a change around in the first 20 mins of the 2nd half!
Well done boys!

(I really wish I had freakin tipped them this week now!.. Doh.)

Go Sea Eagles, regardless!

Brilliantly milked!

But to Sowie's defence, he wasn't going to reach him from where he was standing, and needed to chase him down and probably would have. But the big lug in his way did impede his chase in that the angle Soward needed to run was blocked, and the video ref must have thought the same. The ref thought so too as he went straight up to the video ref for a good look at it.

Dragons were pretty poor overall I thought, and the Dogs were probably more deserving of the win. A good tough game defensively, so much so that the attack from both sides looked very ordinary.

Soward ran out of his way to run into the man stading his ground. And ran faster to the ref to complain about the non exsitent obstruction. than he did to stop patten. The Nrl has double standards. ALways sweeping bad player report incodents with qlds clubs under the carpet.
And again another example apperently on sunday souths had 14 players on the field in the win over the tigers.
Yet all they are is expected to cop a fine.

A similar incodent with the bulldogs earlier in the year and they lose there points when there 14th man didn't even touch the ball.
Yet on sunday souths 14th player did.

John Deere
24-05-2009, 10:35 PM
I think that penalty was justified, a Manly player tried to ankle tap the other teams player without the ball, and the Manly guy that got the ball basically tackled him too.......no where near as bad as last weeks Bulldogs decision.

The Frog
24-05-2009, 10:54 PM
the ankle tap missed, and the player was not impeded. The other incident Orford dived at that ball and got to it before preston arrived, he subsequently ran into him and got knocked over,, orford has to be allowed to try to get to the ball.

John Deere

Commentators love a story....Manly guy connected his ankle tap (knocked Gold coast guy off balance a little) and Orford took the same GC guy out without having possession of the ball, the media can beat it up all they like, I reckon the ref made a justifiable decision, far more justifiable than last weeks.

No offence, and I don't like manly, but it couldn't go either way. it was two players playing for the ball in a contact sport - therefore there was no need for the ref to put the whistle to his lips.

No need for any kind of penalty. I just don't know how you can see that and not just think that two players were doing exactly what they were supposed to.

Not sure about McManus on the wing either, not being biased but I thought the Wolfman has been playing very well the last few games. Good to see Hayne in there and I like the back row and bench. Not sure about our starting props though. Really don't think Kite and Bailey will have much impact. I'd have Josh Perry in front of Kite for some mongrel and start Weyman. Big question mark over the halves but what can you do when there are no standouts.

Snowsnow, league used to be a contact sport, you are allowed to go for the ball and use your body any way you like, including putting your body between the ball and the other player. For heavens sake, we do it in netball, it must still be ok in league.

not sure if that was your point. ;)

John Deere
26-05-2009, 03:01 PM
You can't take someone out unless you have the ball, you can hold your ground, but orford did way more than that!

And cabbage, if the offence was committed in front of the sticks, it deserves a penalty in front of the sticks.

Not even mentioning the ankle tap which did connect and did slightly impede the GC players progress.

Ref got it right this time.

Jahoota
26-05-2009, 03:13 PM
I think thats the real issue for league these days is that you can only contest the ball on the 6th tackle. Everything else is verboten!

I think the lawmakers have it wrong. All other codes (afl, soccer, unuon, netball) allow a contest for the ball pretty well every contact. Sadly league has deviated too far from that ideal and the end result are the sorts of issues arising in the conact area like the orford incident. Contest is only at tackle 6 or a one on one tackel (whuch isnt that common in league anymore)

Please NRL, bring some of the old rules back! (and proper scrum and the Bears! ;) )

yes orford positioned himself in from of preston? in the chase for the ball

as he dived for the ball their ankles connected and the both fell over

the attempted ankle tap before hand i don't think connected

how was Billy slaters form in taking out a doggie - should have been a penalty try - can't remember the reason play got called back

i disagree. when the ball is loose, you can play at it. the rules don't say 'play at it but make sure your body doesn't get in the way of where anyone else wants to go'.

if its loose, you can go for the ball. if his intention had nothing to do with the ball but was purely aiming for the man, then its a penalty. If he was playing for the ball (which he clearly was) he can do that any way he likes.

It wasn't "clear" that he was going for the ball. He never had it, but he took out the GC guy convincingly, two pieces of evidence that su[pport a penalty.

The ankle tap connected, check the vid, and just going for it would be grounds enough for a penalty....like a swinging arm that doesn't find its mark....still a penalty.

Yeah I agree on that one but the ruling was correct. You really should have to use your hands/fingers.

How often do you see guys roll over the line with the ball under their arm and only the arm touches the ground...if they had a tackler around them it would be no try.

Another pet hate, players taking a line drop out in front of the tryline...it should be a scrum to the other team as they get an advantage, same goes for kick for touches that are never on the mark.

I agree on McManus but would probably play Monoghan before the Wofman or even Cooper (yes I know he is a centre) for that matter. I think Wing was a good inclusion, he played well in the city v country game and I think that won him a spot, plus he's been there before and knows what to expect. He can play Hooker, centre, half and 5/8 and lock (actually even f/back and wing for that matter) so he's a good utility.

Bailey and Kite were in the test side, I think you have to play them... and I think Weyman and Poore will be enough. I don't think there is a lot more we can do in the forwards. I think Innes would have added the get under your skin mongrel to the pack and Gallen is way overrated in my opinion. I don't knock Farrah though, they've gone for creativity around the ruck with him. I just think Innes would have been a good option, and Wing could have covered him as well...

If NSW are flogged then they might bring Innes in still. I think he is better defensively. But Farrah knows how to find the try line and is like another half... Hope he has a blinder and we kick the cane toads backside.. The Toads are definately favourites though with a team that has played together for almost 3 seasons now..

On the other hand the NSW team has players coming from 12 different sides and combinations that have never played together... that's gotta make them underdogs in a big way..
