The last few years has been abit of hit and miss ,so we havn't booked yet.
And watching the weather threads does my head in worrying.

Wondering who else does the same these days, looks like alot of places still have alot of rooms ,units, house empty ,I signed up with a few lodges and get emails for cheap last minute deals .
Might do this more often as the savings and 2-3 night day rates are pretty cheap.
I normal just do a week or two at a time ,might just start doing a few 3 night mid week trips.

Well I have booked a school trip every year since 2006. In 2006 we had booked for late September and it looked like we were going to miss out until we got a nice dump the night before our first day of skiing. It snowed heavily right down to Jindabyne, which set the next 3 days up for us nicely. This year I have two trips from school coming down: the first is next week, skiing Tues-Thurs and the second is mid-August 12th-15th. Praying this predicted r@#$ event either buggers off or turns into snowy goodness for next week. Think of the children....won't somebody THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!

I don't pre book, I wait and watch my finances and the weather. Mostly my finances though.

About 1/2 hour after the Thredbo brochure comes in the letterbox, 2nd week of August belongs to me!

(and September if there's a good deal floatin around as well)

Never pre-booked July and probably never will!

Sounds like a few of us will be going down 2nd week of August!
I prebooked back in...April i think. Quite hastily too - a week at the Thredbo hotel with no dinners... and i didn't join the Thredbo club which would've saved a heap for dinner/booze. Ouch. But for a second honeymoon kinda thing, oh well.

i never pre book anymore, i have enough family and friends who own places to stay, so there is always a spare bed somewhere.

in general though as long as you go outside school hols you will definately be able to find a place even if you havent booked.

I prebook family trips that have to be pre-planned anyway. Everything else can be winged.

Pre-Booking can have added benefits, such as' early bird' discounts, bar and restaurant credit as well as cheaper lift passes, which are some of the reasons why I Pre-Book!
Another is that when ya get in early ya can stay where ya wanna stay!

If you go in school holidays you will have to pre-book. Word was that Hotham this week had a record booking, ie no beds left on the mountain.

Depends. Family trips I need to prebook the lodge I'm in or I dont get the week we want. If its just me I wing it and look for a spare bed at the lodge.

OS is different story as its a group of ski buddies or family so I always book as we need specific dates as at it has to fit in with everyones work, social and spousal schedules!

Prebook family/group trips with friends then I usually go down on my own at some point after a good fall (on the bus). I usually go on the big trip in august.

School holidays are always busy for some reason - I just don't get it, I'd rather take my kids out of school for a week in August (maybe that's why I don't, and shouldn't, have any!!). Anyway, things are understandably a little slow so far outside the holidays so keep an eye out for good last minute deals around the place

Good thinking when the kids are at certain ages Wang, but there are some years where the pressure of school work just makes it impossible to justify taking kids out for a holiday (the obvious one is Yr 12)
Up until the end of primary school I never hesitated in taking them out of school for a planned holiday

Haven't pre-booked this year, first time in years. Conditions are too hit and miss and almost every promising system seems to get the dreaded "downgrade" the closer it gets.

We generally book 5-7 nights in the second week of August and then see how the season is either side of that to take advantage of deals.

Some good points and you have to consider trying to arrange leave with work etc.
The main reason I would pre book was, so I could get the place I wanted ,in the first or second week of august .I always booked early ,but never got any discounts.
But now with the snow we have been having or not having, it seems wiser to wait and try to get the good snow conditions over good accommodation and there are last minute deals to be had.

By the time I was in year 12 I was expected to take myself! ;)
