Well I'm not sure which part of the forum to ask this question...it's equipment but not of the alpine variety. ;-)

Just curious as to what lures people use in lake jindy for trout. We are staying on the lake this year and I'm going take a couple of my rods down. I know swede and others have mentioned their fishing prowess' before so I though I might get a few ideas of what the local fishies will have a crack at. Whilst I would imagine lures like minnows, silver spoon etc would be good any other thoughts?? I guess I can also head over the other side of the lake to the caravan park where the local fishing guide has his tackle shop but I thought I would pick up a couple before heading down in case I don't have time. Cheers

Hey Coopski, Tassie Devils are always a good lure from the bank, they cast a long way and they are a the sinking type, you can vary the retrieve speed, slow retrieve to keep them close to the bottom or quick retrieve to raise to the surface. I find Pink Colours work well.

Hi Coopski I'm a fly fisher so can't help with lures but I would call in at the Alpine Angler top of the hill on left just out of Cooma always very helpful. If anyone wants to come over to the light side;) and learn to fly cast pm me

Sorry, can't help you with the Lake Coopski. We just stick to the rivers and streams. If you ever head up high in summer I can share our fav spots..... NOT!!:p;)

Thanks mazza. Sounds good.

Fear not swede. I never expect anyone to give up their favourite spot...especially with such a large audience and without a case of beer to lure you there ;-)

Thanks guys.

Coopski, whatever you do, have a jar of Powerbait handy as sometimes that is all that will work in the lake! Best colours are Chartreuse and Rainbow, but Fluoro Orange, Pink and Lime Twist work well. Use light line, small hooks on a short leader off a swivel to keep a small sinker off the hook. Try to keep the sinker sitting still on the bottom with tension on the sinker so you feel any bites quickly.

But for lures, Celta Spinners in Red or Green colours are the duck’s guts. They don’t twist the line as much as some spinners, and trout love the flash and colour.

Floating minnows are probably the best HB lures for the lake. Wind them so they dive and then stop so that they surface like a sick or wounded fish. Use this stop-start method over weedbeds, and fish the shallow waters early or late in the day and deeper water in the middle of the day. Some of the better HB’s to try include:-

Tilsan Minnow in Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout

Halco Laser Pro 45mm In H51 Black and Gold

RMG Scorpion 35 in H59 Brown Trout, H60 Rainbow Trout, and H66 Oz Frog

Rapala CD3, CD5, CD7, or CD9 in Trout or Perch patterns

Also try a Halco Nightwalker for night fishing.

Some of the soft plastics also work well. Try Squidgie Fish 50mm or 60mm in Rainbow or Gary Glitter, or Berkley Powerbait Minnows 3in size in Pumpkinseed.

The best places around Jindy are the Creel Bay and Waste Point area, Hatchery Bay, Curiosity Rocks, The Claypits, in front of the Banjo Paterson Park in town, and the Snowy Arm.

For spinning, I have always gone light and used small Celta lures. Better still, get yourself some fly fishing gear, much more engaging.

Remember, rivers are closed untill the October long weekend.

Thanks guys that's tops. And yep I know the rivers are off limits. To be honest we've got a place backing on the lake and I've always wanted to drop a line in. I'm usually up the mountain all day every day when in jindy (or I stay on the hill) but this year I'll probably be off the slopes more than on due to having the little guy in tow (too young to ski but next year.... :-)

I've heard the powerbait can do the trick sometimes with trout so I'll throw some in the kit.

As for fly fishing it's always something I've wanted to try. I want to come back down in the summer months to do some hiking so I might give it whirl then. Nice summer holiday in thredbo sounds peachy. Long hikes, some mountain bike riding, few rounds of golf and learn to fly fish :-)

Only sometimes...???

During my last season in Jindy a workmate, an avid trout fisho, told me about all the fishing gear he brought down with him including a G Loomis rod with a $600 reel and a backpack full of all the best lures and gear. He asked if I had brought any fishing gear with me, which I hadn't, but I said I'd buy some cheap gear and fish with him. So I bought a $40 Shakespeare combo from Jindy Sports, a pack of tiny hooks, swivels and sinkers and a jar of Powerbait.

Whenever we had split shifts and weren't skiing, we'd go fishing for the few hours between shifts. In about 20 trips, I only failed to get fish a couple of times.

My smallest was over 1kg, and my largest went 3kg cleaned and fed 8 people! My mate, with all his fancy gear and lures, finally caught two fish around 20cm long. To say he was peeved is an understatement! But like most true trout fishos, he would not convert and use the fluoro Playdough!

Oh well, I hope he enjoyed his tiny little trout from the supermarket freezer...:big_laugh::big_laugh:

I'd love to learn to fly fish, I think it is such a beautiful sport and an art. Love love love watching a river runs through it, the cinematography is fantastic!
