Take your pick, here's six that are popular:
Honshu: via Nagano - Hakuba Valley, MyokoKogen, Nozawa Onsen. Fly to Hokkaido: Niseko, Furano, Tomamu.

I'm going to cut in here (how rude). I and 2 mates are heading to Japow in Jan. We were thinking Niseko. We are after snow quality (deep pow) and a bit of night life. The least amount of commute too. Is Niseko the one?

Well it depends on whst you are looking for

Niseko is great but to many Aussies, it a bit like visiting Bali, you have been to Indonesia but never really noticed. Powder is great but gets tracked out to soon these days, if you go hire a car so you can get to Moiwa and Rusutsu.

Talking Rusutsu its better than Niseko in my opinion, better longer lasting powder and far superior grooming on the runs (that go for miles)

Furano, excellent ski area, lousy transport in town, definatly get a car here and drive over to the other resorts in the area like Sahoro

Sahoro, love it, stay at the resort hotel and not club med. Good skiing and touring the surounding asrea is great, there is a lake in easy driving distance withg the most amazing Ice Bar you have ever seen.

Tomamu is excellent but mnore expensive, I stayed five nights in the Galleria which is total indulgence but the Towers are fine, no town as such so you can feel a little isolated but a huge resort with skiing for all levels, great for a mixed level group.

If you get a car you can drive around and find many small resorts with one or two lifts, we had great fun at these as they are very quiet and its like having a ski resort to yourself.

Highly DHS, like asb said also, a trip to Rusutsu for a couple of days, but to compare it with Bali????

So if you were going to Japan with a young family -2A's +2C's 5 years and 3 years ( at time of travel), would you go to Niseko if you wanted good snow and family friendly? Or somwhere else???

Niseko would be fine, but tack on a couple of days at Rusutsu. The kids will love the hotel. The whole hotel is set up for kids. Talking trees, animatroni band, 3D cinema, wave pool, merry go round, games room..... and the snows really good too!!!

Here's a thread that covers your question: http://www.snowatch.com.au/forum/threads/3459-Where-to-ski-in-Japan-Feb-2011/page4

If you don't mind being hotel based (day & night), Shiga Kogen has ski in - ski out hotels.

My suggestion is MyokoKogen near Nagano, the Tourist Office is very helpful & may get accommodation discounts ( it worked for us). Use the JR East Any 4 Day Rail Pass. See: www.myoko.tv/foreign/english/ (http://www.myoko.tv/foreign/english/)

<---------- This pic was taken at Myoko (digging cars out at hotel).
