Well since new skis were off the agenda (again!) I decided to spend some of the $$$ I would have spent on skis on a new cmaera/camcorder to replace my 8 year old cannon 3meg pix camera.
and this is what I brought. Really looking forward to giving this a workout in japan in few months time. Certainly different buy HD video + 8megpix pics at teh throw of a switch was a winner.

Looks nice!
we're looking around for one at the moment, to take to Japan as well :)
possibly one of these, I've heard some good reports on the quality, and for the price it doesn't really matter.

Nice camera. I used it as my personal cam as well, great quality for mid-bright light but a bit average in low-light. Good for casual recording and skiing. With such a tiny camera you will get camera shake no matter how good you are at skiing and filming. I highly recommend a .5 or .7 wide angle lens to minimize that and take better shots.
At the very least get a monopod to help stabalize shots. Jerky HD shots are really bad when you play them back onto big screens.

great tips!
tho if I'm pissed will that help smooth out the jerkyness on the big screen?

It is quite amazing how much better the quality is, compared to the old Mini DV. Also, there used to be a constant humming noise on the old one in every clip, that I think was caused by the noise of the tape spinning. This one has no bakground noise what so ever.
Get some 3M dual lock velcro and put it on your helmet.;)

Gotta get on that and get a HD camera before next winter.....

Should I go Hard Drive video camera or one with memory cards? NOt keen on tape ones as I have owned two previous ones like this.
Want to look at a H Def one.

I have been playing with my new found gadget. I love the way you can change modes, settings etc all one handed. Seperate buttons for pic or video mode means its ready to do either without rotatinh wheels or entering settings.
My only issue is that my home PC doesnt appear to have the processing power to handle 60 frames a second high def video. Even the instruction manual tells you you'll need a dual core processor. Works fine on 1280 X 720 @ 30fps but capture it higher and the PC cant play smoothly and the sound goes out of sync. That was a drawback I didnt see. Oh, well, just better upgrade to to HD TV!

They are apparently reliable Chunky - and people have said this review is spot on so there's pros and cons - http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/digital_video/kogan-technologies/full_hd_1080p_touchscreen_video_camera/329047

I think this is the same review

It's where I originally saw the review anyway...

well the reviewer might do a good review of the Kogen camcorder but they have failed in checking their facts on pricing criertia when comparing other camera's.....
"roughly a third of what you'd normally pay for a high-definition camcorder (even budget models like the Sanyo Xacti HD1010 (http://www.goodgearguide.com.au/article/271237/sanyo_xacti_hd1010) cost $1000 or so)"
ahhh, no, you can get the sanyo xacti HD1010 for around $400 and its been like that for a while. My HD2000 was only $500. Chris Jagger is clearly a 2nd rate journo.
That said, it is a good price for a touch screen camcorder that films in HD.

Depends on the date of the review Hoots, though the good gearguide one was 9/12/09.
You're just being a pedant ;) We haven't bought it by the way, delayed it a little, prices will probably drop again soon

agree. I being a pedant (what the hell is that??!??! pedantic? hehehehe) and I brought my camera about 15/12/09! I sourced my camera from hong kong so I'd imagine that you'd pick the kogen up there pretty cheap (if you havent already priced it there!)

the kogen/kogan isn't available anywhere other their own website, it's an aussie guy who brings in his own brand (his surname).

So tape, hard drive or memory stick? What's better?

:(
Don't forget - ski pole = monopole. Some perfectionists even modify the top of the grip so that it has the correct thread screw in it - I reckon it's overkill for a bit of casual shooting on the hill.
Pods - never heard of that brand either (but I haven't bought one for a few years now). Looking at its specs - isn't 5x optical a bit short in a digicam these days?

I vote for flash memory with a memory card slot.

I have heard of Kogan. A friend of mine bought a Kogan full HD tv and he loves it, he has not had one problem with it. Not sure what the camcorders would be like.

So tape, hard drive or memory stick? What's better?
Tape (DV) is still great medium. Cameras like the HV20, HV30, HV40 record fantastic HD videos without the compression artifacts you see in FLash medium recorders. However, for convenience and new technlogy, Flash storage is so so much more convenient. The cameras coming out these days are fantastic and really catching up to DV and in many areas beating them especially in image sharpness.

Sorry chunky, no internet at home yet, and I was without my work laptop. posting from a nokia phone is a nightmare, so didn't try.
I think others have answered far better than I could, I know nothing about it all.
