View Full Version : Backcountry trips for this winter

Well I've got a few places I want to visit this year in the backcountry so thought I'd start building a bit of excitement by putting my plans out there a bit....... and give myself some motivation to follow through by putting it out there on a public forum that will kick my butt and call me soft and I don't!

For day trips to the Paralyser for sure, even as a side trip on a lift skiing day at Perisher. A day out to Mt Tate and probably a few day trips off the top of Thredbo into the south Ramsheads and Leatherbarrell Creek. Would love to do Twin Valleys but get the feeling that is a biiiggg day trip beyond my backcountry experience and fitness (or lack thereof).

Also keen for a springtime camping trip out onto the main range somewhere.

What about everyone else? Any plans, any suggestions for slackcountry trips not mentioned above?

This guys site has a few good ideas:

I plan on getting in on a trip in September once the shop gets a little quieter. I have to get some AT bindings and Climbing skins for my skis that I have put aside.

You did not like the 100km/hr winds and rotting dust covered summer like snowpack you encountered last year in September ;) tongue.gif

graemlins/big_laugh.gif @ Kaz - every year is different! this could be the one when there's lots of snow still in Sept ;)

As for slackcountry stuff, Paralyser sounds great, will have to start running again (walking is a good start!) to be fit enough so I can enjoy it, but all sounds great :D

If you ski, yes!

You could be the first skier to get turns for the 2009 Australian winter Kaz :D

For a 4 dayer I would like to camp high, up near Sentinel, easy access to Crags, Watsons Creek, Siren Song, sentinel, Caruthers, little Austria, blue lake, etc etc etc.

Of course conditions, work and pass outs have to align like a 1 in 100 year eclipse!

Definitely good access to some great terrain and snow for those prepared to camp out that way! Anyway know the rules about where you can and can not camp on the Main Range?

Something to do with staying a certain distance away from water courses from memory.

Not allowed to camp in the catchment of the alpine lakes and not allowed to camp within 100m (?) of a water course.

Aahh ok thanks, can't have those smelly backcountry types turning pristine glacial lakes into cesspits.

In 2000 while camping near Twynam I managed to hold it in for 4 days, no kidding.

Yes, except that was an early article, and it was not an ice climber, in fact it was a skier.
