From the Snowatch equipment guide.
http://www.snowatch.com.au/equipment_ACCESSORIES_stoecklidemo_backcountry_kit .php

I also sell this kit and took it with me to Hakuba where I felt much safer going out of bounds with a group that all had this same kit with them.

The shovel has an extendable probe stored inside the handle.
We didn't have to dig anyone out thankfully, but I wouldn't go out back country without a beacon and the rest of the equipment to dig someone out if buried, even in Australia.

I also have this kit.

Although lucky for me I've also never had to use it.

Want to go have a play with it with some friends but none of my friends have one and you need another beacon yeah?

*admin note: Snowatch likes to support the Australian snow industry retailers as much as possible and doesn't promote OS sites that undercut them. Any links to OS sites like this will be removed.

Caveat. I have only bought equipment from overseas that wasn't readily available in Australia or available at a reasonable price.

Hopefully, with more people getting into BC skiing/boarding, this safety equipment will become more readily available and demand and competition will make it fairly priced. In previous years however, this type of equipment has not been readily available and has been virtually twice the price as overseas and that IMO is not fair or reasonable.

I also bought safety gear overseas at a similar time to Taxxy, at the time Paul was unable to source the gear, but I have to say that the deal Paul and Stockli offer is better than what I could get it for overseas! Taking into account local warranty and delivery, it really is quite a bit better too!

I bought my avi overseas and boots as they are not available in Australia.

When I can I buy local!

I sell Avi beacons, and usually compete well on price with overseas shops, no work required so low profit margin on beacons, shovels and probes.
Boots are another story, we have to do a lot of work to sell a boot, and a BC boot has to fit even better than an Alpine boot, so most of them are close to $1000 here.

Could it be this? (http://www.shopwiki.com/detail/d=MAMMUT_Barryvox_Pulse_Avalanche_Beacon/jumpToFirst=t/)

The Barryvox is a nice unit, but really, the BCA tracker is all anyone would ever need unless guiding (possibility of multiple burials, ie more than two or three!)

I have also heard (unconfirmed) that Barryvox pulse tranceivers and UHF radio's don't get along, something to do with the switch being magnetic (for waterproofness) and the radio interfering with it. Easily overcome by radio's being switched off in the event of a burial, but not ideal. I stress that this info is only from a couple of guides in Japan and is unconfirmed, and it is also 2006/07 info, so they may have fixed it....please inform yourself thoruoghly if you are thinking of getting one of these.

Barryvox Pulse is a great unit and turned out to be the best of the lot when i was doing a special course in Japan with one of the top 5 guys in the world. No interference with radios, multi burial this unit was top marks.

Lot of the time it was the operator not the equipment.

The radio issue is only when the searcher or someone very close is transmitting. A rather specific circumstance, but nonetheless, existent.

A good friend of mine snapped his A.C. ligament (knee) at Blue lake, we couldn’t drag him out so I used my mobile to call for help. they sent an helicopter . We couldn’t believe it as we were expecting snow mobiles. Good thing his health ins. was paid up.

My advice when avvy gear training, tie the transmitting beacon to a moving target....like a dog.....it stumps the searcher graemlins/big_laugh.gif

Owners are lovely people and the food is great. My favourites, cherizo fajitas and chicken and vegetable chimichanga.
