Don't you have to be like instructor standard to do it? I'd hate to take a spill holding a flare. smile.gif

If you fall, you just dowse your flares and shuffle to the end.
Frog It’s soooo much fun & we are hoping to where Spaz’s head cams.

ive always wanted to do the flare run but wasnt 100% sure on how to do it/register.. id be at perisher that weekend but would def make the drive over to do it... would i need to buy a lift ticket for the night?
Barcoo

No guys you don't need a lift ticket. we will all meet beforehand and I will guide every one though it .
It’s so easy we just rock up, sign a peace of paper and your in. I showed Skipig last year and he wants to do A flare run every week this year. It’s well worth the dive MJ.
By the way I will Also be doing one on the 8th of Aug.

All the standards have dropped and its a really fun and relaxed atmosphere.... and its not that quick a trip back down on freshley re-frozen groomers .... and if its a nice night its really pleasant skiing down by moonlight..... BTW... make sure you are wearing something really warm and also dont mind getting it burnt (mabe sml spots from wind blown sparks) and a broken set of stocks for holding the flare so your gloves dont get burnt(Lesson learnt and later, taught by the brilliant Barcoo last year) I will collect some before everyone gets down ... just need to know #'s

If you do every single flare run from the beginning to the end of season that they run, you get invited to a dinner. I think they also give you a free beer to make the Slowbums ride a bit merrier.
Watch out for Backpacker! He is a knarly little fellow, who has ended up going around the bullwheel at the top when his backpack caught up on it. It was a sight.
Oh and dont wear your best gloves wear some old ones, as you can end up with burn holes in them from the flares.
The flares actually give you better definition of the snow so it is much easier to ski. Depending on the conditions the snake goes at different speeds.
If I feel so inclined I might participate, but I could be busy with +1.

Good tips SJS, but the closing line?!?!
do you plan that stuff this far in advance? graemlins/cold.gif
Only done the flare run once, the biggest ever anniversary one.
Old gloves check, rotate flare (seriously It will burn down one one side otherwise), have a laid back attitude-maybe less important with much less than 1000 skiers smile.gif
My hero (yep he told me later he was a semi-pro roller blader),
"well this was my first day on skis/snow and I'd never been on the supertrail before, we did Friday and Merritts all day!!!"
Why this is cool-
Firstday on snow-anywhere, any transport system
First snowgums ride
First supertrail view
First ride sans stocks
1000 other skiers
Its dark!!!
This guy should have started skiing way younger-olympic champ. (PS he was for real). No he did not crash.
My tip, do not line up behind a boarder unless you know that they are:
a) good
b) if the answer is not a) then swap with some ****er. Rubbish skiers can play follow the leader, rubbish boarders seem to wish to flatten the leader.

They also do them in the US, Canada and Europe

Last night was the first flare run for the season, with about 20-30 participants... evryone had a great run, there was no falls and there was lots of laughs, whoops and cheering ... there was the usual cheering crowd around ski in ski out with glow sticks and cow bells... there was the traditional tossing of non insructors...both spaz and myself got tossed along with a few others...overall a great night and there's only 15 more to go....looking forward to next week!!

Was that supposed to happen Skipig?
It was, they warned us at the top something different was going to happen and to just follow the person in front. Which isn't always the best advice as the.. eh emm, skier in front of skipig fell twice veering off course into the dark.

Barcoo &/or Spaz
Can you put a summary together for those who at the last minute want to participate and or watch like SC mentioned.
Also orignally the meeting spot was the bistro for those who are participating but Spaz mentioned (either to me or somewhere on the forum) that we were meeting at his box, can you please post the exact details for people who don't have your mobile etc.
What is the last moment that you can register - say if someone wants to head over from perisher at the end of their day skiing?
And one other thing - I am hoping to be in the village at 1pm in time for the late start ticket so will call or msg Spaz or Barcoo (24 I seem to have missplaced yours so PM) for a slide in the afternoon :)
Looking forward to this weekend :)

Four of us here are interested including missus frog and myself, just don't know what we are supposed to do.
#1 You need to be at VT (Valley Terminal) by 5:30.
#2 If you've never done a Flare Run before you need to sign in at #1.
Nothing complicated, just turn up and scibble on some paper.
VT is at the base of Kosciuszko Express chairlift, which is across the foot bridge from Thredbo Alpine Hotel (the far end of the Village from were you drive in). My little booth (or box or hole) is in VT and is the window that everyone chooses to rest their ski's against while they wait to catch SnowGums chair it's also right were you sign. I'll be there from about 4:30-5 drinking beer and I'm normally the last to leave after the FR - drinking beer.
You don't need to be a great skier I did it after 2 days skiing, you just need to be able to follow the person in front and be fit enough to do the Supertrail without a rest or falling.
They have a convenient bin at the top of Slowgums for empty bottles if you desire a drink on the lift.

For Apres Flare Run people I would suggest the Bistro - Anyone else got a better idea?
It would be good if someone was wearing a Snowatch hoodie or something? 24 is 25 participating or watching? That way there would be a central gathering spot. Rather than +1 or friends of Snowatchers having to scranle for phone numbers.
The Frog
13-08-2009, 05:34 PM
We were told to wear old gear as the flare's can spit and burn holes in your stuff, especially gloves...that has me a bit worried as my stuff I have here is top dollar.
Might be a bit cold for a snowatch hoodie though as it will be very windy at that time. I have snowatch on my helmet anyway, as does missus frog.
Jerraman
13-08-2009, 06:00 PM
Yes, there's a risk that the flares will burn your gear. Instructors use old suits and gloves. I've done a couple of flare runs and not had a problem. I hold the flare right at the end and out to the side rather than up. Only problem is that it's easy to drop the flare.
I'll do the flare run on Saturday.
ozgirl
13-08-2009, 06:26 PM
Frog can you wear a windbreaker fleece under the snow watch hoodie (ie lots of layers).
I suspect that you could ride the chair with an outter layer for warmth and then put that outer layer in the a backpack for the actual run.
I will be going to mum and dad's tomorrow will raid their wardrobe for old gear (it could be really old tho) you are more than welcome to borrow whatever i find.
Enjoy the run everyone. Was hoping to make the weekend dash but I think I'll have to save it up.
Hey Spaz - was good to say hi. Yeah, I'm hooked! Have been in my cave these last 10 days...plotting my next assault.

Spaz i forgot to take the stickers down today (even though you weren't there) but met lavender lilly anyway.
Missus frog is not so keen after hearing about the gear burning issues. If the wind is not too bad I still might give it a go.
I wear my good gear, but use broken poles to extend the reach of the flare, so far after many FR's, I have only one tiny hole in my pants and one in my gloves - both occurred when I didn't use the poles. The other trick is to keep rotating the flare so it burns evenly.
I have a good stock of broken poles.
Meeting in the bistro is a good idea, though I'm generally to rushed to get there (I will make an effort) If skiing till the end of the day you only have time for one (maybe 2) beers before heading to VT - I prefer to have my beer in VT, I have half a case stashed there and will buy another for Sat.
If anyone wants to wear a camera come to VT earlier-no charge. I will be wearing one but you only get a good view of the person in front. And I'm likely to fall :D I play them back as soon as it finishes in VT.
Finishing off the beer is fun on Friday Flat for a couple of runs during night skiing (then drinks at River Inn was skipigs standard)-it's a good way for none able flare runners to join in (kids & boarders). Any other ideas, for dinner perhaps? pizza?

Have fun guys, I am unfortunately already booked.
It is true, wear your oldest gloves, they are the things that get burnt with me, and if there are too many flare runners, sometimes your skis will have burns in them, but I don't care about that, add's character.
Ozgirl - drop the $$ with Spaz and let me know, as I am outback most of the day.

I am sure it will be editted - i don't think anyone would want to watch the dark footage of you riding the slowglums chair!!!
Riveting stuff that would be - NOT!
