My plans are changing as I work out my trip, I now have scrapped plans to go to Rusutsu and Niseko, been there done that twice so I am heading north to skiing and non skiing destinations..

I am now working on

5 days Furano
3 days Sounkaku
4 days Abashiri
2 days Kushiro
5 days Tomamu

All to be fine tuned yet, some of the days are traveling days and stop overs on the way, there are heaps of smaller resorts to do a few runs at and other attractions like the ice breaker ships in Abashiri and frozen waterfalls in Sounkaku.

I am still trying to work out the train trip back to Osaka from Saporro.

Our dates may be changing though... We are thinking only 7 days in Hakuba as we are taking a month of to go camping in Top End of Oz in May and work is going mental.

Has anyone stayed at Villa Hakuba? Is it ok?

My dates are the 12th of Feb for 2 weeks. Doing 2 days at Hakuba on the first week and then the entire 2nd week Niseko at the Gondola Chalets.

Anyone got any ideas for reasonable priced accom at Hakuba? Nothing fancy just staying for 2 nights!

OK the plans are set for my Hokkaido Tour 2010. I am avoiding Rusutsu and Niseko completely and heading off to some very different areas.

My Trip

Sunday 21 Feb

Travel to Osaka from Sydney via Gold Coast on Jetstar Star Class. Stay that night at Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport.

Monday 22 Feb

Fly to Sapporo then pick up the Rav 4 I have hired and drive to Furano, I am staying at Tsuru Apartments for five nights.

Saturday 27 Feb

Head to Sounkyo to stay at Hotel Taisetsu for three nights, this is where they have the frozen water falls and ice displays and the small ski resort of Kurodake.

Tuesday 2 March

Travel to Abashiri staying three nights at Hotel Abashirikoso, here we will snowmobile ride on a frozen lake, take the ship to see the frozen ocean and drift ice and play at the local ski slopes.

Friday 5 March

Travel South again stopping overnight at Kushiro staying at the Prince Hotel

Saturday 6 march

Travel to Sahoro Resort staying at the Resort Hotel, we stop here for three nights

Tuesday 9 March

Drive to Tomamu resort staying for four nights at the Tomamu Towers Hotel.

Saturday 13 March

Head back to Chitose for the flight back to Osaka then back to Sydney arriving on Sunday morning.

In all there is a fair amount of driving this trip but we love this, you get to stop at locations and see things you would never see otherwise. While we will ski a lot thats only half the reason for this trip, we want to get away from the main Aussie Tourist areas like we did in 2007 and experience the real Japan.

Haven't booked yet, not sure where to go... Been to Hirafu for the last two years but I think that may need a rest. The requirement of powder though is the only thing that can draw me back to Hirafu again next year. Hakuba is an option and maybe I should just bite the bullet and say hi to the snow monkeys.

I plan to go 2 Nihon..
When? I am not 100% sure (Maybe late Jan/Early Feb). Where? Maybe Zao or Shiga or somewhere else.
With who? Well that all depends.
What beer will I drink? Kirin, Sapporo, Asahi. Suntroy, Yebisu, amongst others.
What will I eat? Hmmm... Raman, Udon, Don, Yakatori, okonomiyaki, etc etc and Mos Burger.
How will I get there? Jetstar, I say.
How long will I stay? 2 to 3 weeks.
Will I do any sightseeing? Of course.. Gotto go back 2 Tokyo. Haven't seen much of Osaka.. and really want to check out Hiroshima.

I think that my name will have to be scratched off that list. :(

The Mr PB has been asked to go on a marlin fishing trip for a few weeks with mates to Port Stephens in Feb and he wants to go desperately, coupled with my back giving me issues... I think I will take the time and go to Thailand for a week on a yoga retreat.

If we go, we won't be able to go until March.

Am gutted. Hopefully the Aussie season will play ball and provide some wicked cover for 2010.

Please post many photos so I can drown myself in jealousy as I drool over your trips!

Frog - I wouldn't book through a travel company, sorry to say. They usually add loads to the price and only have certain places available via their booking systems. I always book directly with the place I'm staying, the emails are interesting, but I prefer it

Maybe Podlette but there are those who can not be stuffed doing the ground work and just want the work performed by others so who know the terrain. Lessening the chances of mistakes I guess though saying that not all travel agencies are fool proof.

You could save on weight to japan Vet, Onsen's instead of swimming pools = no tog's required

Hoots - Tokyo, relative to the resorts, can be quite mild. I got around in a long sleeve top and fleece during the day, we weren't there at night

I'm taking my puffy and shell and fleece/icrebreaker so I can choose how to layer. or wear puffy at night out places etc

I am going 2 Japan in Feb... but I don't know if I am able to go boarding.
I am going with the missus who is an Osaka local, so I will have my own tour guide.
We have checked out some day trips to places not far from the Kansai/Gifu region... 600 yen for a return bus & lift tickets.
I hope that time permits a day or 2 sliding..

So, if you might need an extra pair of gloves/mittens or socks whilst at Hakuba is there plenty on offer at reasonable prices, or is it better to take extra from here?
Still trying to fit too much CRAP in.......

I never walked into evergreen or any of the ski hire shops at Habuka so I dont know what they did or didnt have. I'm guessing you can get extra's there if needed, maybe back in hakuba itself. It's certainly not a nor-am ski resort shopping extraganza thats for sure. Perhaps Bear or Karen can enlighten us?

Well my trips final tweeking is done, I have moved from the Alpha Towers in Tomamu to the Galleria Towers so I now have a huge room with a spa and sauna, the spa is in an area that over looks the resort, mind you once its switched on the windows will steam up.

I now have 4 nights in Furano staying in a one bedroom apartment, then three nights in Sounkyo at a super hotel followed by three nights in Abashiri staying in a nice hotel on the lake (frozen mlake) then four nights at Sahoro and five at Tomamu.

Looking at the list on this forum, looks like I won't see to many aussies on my travels.

So at the end of next week I head to Vietnam for a week then on my return two weeks later I am off to Japan.

and I reckon thats a good thing! I'm clearly of the opinion that the only difference between bali and niesko is about 40 degrees celius. :tongue:

I was walking to the Car Park from the Higashiyama Hilton and passed this guy coming the other way and said G'day as you do.

He stopped in his tracks and said he was from Scotland and he had to travel to Japan to find out Aussies really do say G'day, he said all he had heard since arriving was G'Day from all the Aussies, he was blown away by how many there were there at the time.

I agree, its a good thing, on previous trips when I got away rom the Giagin crowds I had much more fun

For those in the know, just a question about Jet* checkin.
Going Melb-Goldy-Tokyo.
Never flown Jet* before and wondering if rocking up at check-in in Melbs an hour before the flight is plenty of time or should I allow 90 mins because of extra luggage etc.

I would assume that you are going to have to re check in your luggage in Goldy, so an hour should be fine as it's domestic from Melb. I always have some time up my sleeve just in case traffic sucks

I've noticed a few of jetstars goldy > tokyo flights have been cancelled (lack of numbers I assume) and they appear to be flying another domestic leg from goldy > cairns to meet up with the cairns > tokyo flight. Might pay to check your flight details havent altered from first booked....

flying to cairns on the 6th at a civilised hour and then from cairns on the 7th (a few of us staying at mates place in cairns on the 6th feb before flying out of cairns on the 7th). Tho I think you might be on the same flight as us on the way back. 15th feb?

I should start packing, I am leaving for Tokyo tomorrow :eek:
Get into Sydney at 3:30pm I think then leave at night, that will be book reading time I guess. 2 days in Tokyo then of to Hakuba, feels like a job sometimes until I actually land there.

Have done the SYD-CNS-NRT thing a couple of years back (with QF J). Makes for a long trip.

This year booked JQ (Jet*) SYD-CNS-NRT (*class).
Then got RESCHEDULED to SYD-OOL-NRT
Then the flight from OOL was CANCELLED.
Managed to reschedule a day earlier.
Now departs from T1 SYD (Intl) so no rechecking luggage at the goldiie.
Keeping the fingers crossed for the return flights.
Also have JAL domestic flights - hope no changes given the bankruptcy thing?
Might need to increase insurance cover!

JAL is flying normally.

Yesterday was pretty good - plenty of lines to be found both in and out of the resort, even late in the day.

Pfft on Qantas Club. On our last trip from Melbourne to LA, we spent maybe 30 minutes in the duty free area after queueing up to get into and past Customs. Then we were queued up for the plane, a search and a little pat down.

On the way back, we could check our bags in at Vaustralia at 3pm (for a flight at 10pm) and go back by cab (US$20 x 2 trips) to a real club for dinner and drinks until going back at 8.30pm for a 9.30pm boarding. Oh if only Tullamarine was as good as LAX. :rolleyes:

I was in the Qantas Club today, much more civilised way to wait for a plane, I had two meetings in Sydney today the out to the airport, grab a towel pack and freshen up in the shower, sit in a nice lounge and read my book, have a snack and a drink then wonder down to board the flight as they call it at the last minute.

YAY for Qantas club - a friend gave me a voucher for QC for the outbound trip. And I am flying back J so get access on they way back. Anyone been to the NRT club?

Since the flights out are at night, the only real benefit IMO is to have a shower. You can pig out at the food bar and get pi55ed if you really want to.

On your way home if you have a Narita stop over and your not a QC member, down the lower floors is a pay for shower area, its excellent you rent the room for 30 minutes and its not inlike the Q Club ones with a nice shower, toilet and sink etc, they provide you with towels and shampoo etc.

Well worth remembering so you can fly home refreshed.

Is there a club at Osaka Airport ? I am flying via Osaka this time so the hotel is at the airport.
