If goping to Queenstown - fly direct. Dearer airfares, but cheaper in long run, as if you fly to anywhere else, you have to factor in transfer to Queenstown or car hire and overnight accomodation.

What gear did you plan to take? Warm clothing a must obviously, but things like skis/board can be hired in Queenstown easily and relatively cheaply. Depends on whether you just have to take your favourite set of skis or not. I find it just as easy hiring from someone like Browns, or even on the slopes.

Getting up the mountain is easy if you are staying in Queenstown. You don't have to hire a car unless you want to also get out and look at the sights. And the scenery is pretty spectacular! Buses run to the main fields from Queenstown for a reasonable fee (might be $10NZ return I think, biut dont quote me). Thats a good option if things are a bit treacherous and you arent confident driving in the snow. Coronet is sealed all the way, but Remarkables is gravel from the time you leave the main road. Can be interesting driving with the buses up and down that one!
