I know I've been back a few weeks, but I've finally got a bit of time on my hands. None of my photos have been cropped or touched up yet, but what the hel.....I may never have time for that!
After spending 7 days in Hakuba I spent another 10 days travelling to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. I thought I'd throw up some pics in the hope it might inspire someone else to experience more of this beautful country and it's people than just the ski fields.
I'll kick off with Tokyo, Hakuba and Nagano and add some more in a day or two.

Nice. If you had to pick one - what would be the highlight away from the ski resort? I have a few highlights, all quite different. The Tsukiji Markets in Tokyo are high on the list because of the atmosphere, the smells and the extraordinary sights. Another is the Kenninji Temple in Kyoto. It's simply lovely and peaceful and the gardens quite beautiful, even in the middle of winter. Then there's the Umeda Skygarden building in Osaka. I love great architecture and this modern building is awesome!
This other highlight is quite an odd one. I went to the tourist info place at Kyoto station and was directed to the foreign tourist info office located nearby. The instructions were to go to the department store and take the elevator. I approached the main entrance just as they were opening for trading. As I walked through each staff member was standing at attention at their counter and bowed as I passed. Not just a nod, but a deep low bow so their torsos were parallel with the ground. Quite weird and most unexpected. I felt like royalty in my daggy boots and fleecy. Customer service is quite unbelievable in Japan and I was wondering if I was in the same store when I exited and the staff were then going about their day to day business. :D

My MD bows everytime he sees one of us, even if it's in Mac centre graemlins/big_laugh.gif so it's common practice. It's amusing when we have visitors in meetings, the bowing can go on for a while :D

These octopus ball are awesome.....scrumptious batter made from flour, dashi stock and eggs filled with a piece of boiled octopus tentacle, pickled ginger, ground dried shrimp and sometimes shallots. When cooked they put them on a plate and top them with a sticky brown savoury, but slightly sweet sauce, mayonnaise, bonito flakes and ground dried green seaweed. Trust me, they're to die for!

These pics are of the Umenda Sky Building. I love this building with it's glass walled elevators on the outside of the building, the glass cone that seems to float between the two towers, the great views, the escalators going up and down through glass tunnels to and from the top of the cone to the towers and even the cheesy corny way it's promoted to couples with love seats and heart shapped padlocks engraved with the lovers names and locked there at the top of the building forever, or at least until the divorce.
