Am looking at South Korea, China, Japan or Canada.
im possibly doin another 09 trip first a Surf trip to indo... i never been before so might give it a go and its gonna be +1 and mine combined 30th party :D
oh and from there maybe on to canada
The Vets are all booked for the January school holidays. 6am'ish on 9th Jan 2010 we fly Vaustralia from Melbourne to LA direct - no Sydney 'stopover'. Brilliantly, Vaust realised passengers want to arrive in the morning. Then its the tourist drive to Tahoe, maybe via Yosemite with an o'night somewhere, Then first nite on the 10th is in Squaw Valley for 1 week then sth tahoe for 1 week.
2011 is part booked.
Ski cheap, but often.

Hmmmm... looking at Hakuba Feb or so
+1 wants to see the snow monkeys
The dollar pretty well rules out the US.
The Harley that the +1 is angling for will pretty well rule out everything else! :(
I can't take a year without snow!

Antartica, New York and Paris, visit family in Holland, +1 wants to add sailing in the Mediteranian off Turkish coast, and train trip on the Oriental Express from Paris to ....? Not sure I think it is Vienna.
Might just throw in some skiing in Utah too.
Our Big 50 present from this year to ourselves next year - oh and DAD's (mine) paying! Don't you just love the old guy!
Hmmmmm, wonder if it will all come to fruition!

That's what I've heard which is why I want to get in now before it becomes over run by Aussies.
Hmmm... I reckon there'd have to be another 5-10 years of development before I'd ski either.

Also heard that although South Korea's ski areas get nice dry snow they don't get anywhere near as much as Japan so soft snow is not normally the go.
Of course who really knows without going, just relaying what I've read from those who have been. There are a couple of darkside threads on both places I think.

This sounds like it could be a good bet but like SA says, might need a few years to get up and running.
Being so far out in the middle of crap knows where in communist China chances are good though crowds of powder shredding westerners should be quiet for a long while yet!

Heavenly has a deal - ski the rest of the season and the 09/10 season for $US329. A 2 week holiday with 10 days on snow = $US33 a day for the lift ticket.
Squaw has a $360'ish 'bronze' season pass sale on for 09/10. Pity the black out dates eat into my trip.

I got an email yesterday from Bestflights for cheaper deals than that for flights to LA or SFO on Vaust or Qantas up to Feb 10 so I'd say they were expecting it.
I wouldn't fly with delta, worse record for safety and service than United, same small poxy seats too.
V had premium economy for $2100 inc taxes to LA or SFO, which is what we originally paid for our V flights to LA, so a good deal!

If I picked the US again I would probably like to sample the resorts around Deer Valley. I like the looks of Park City with its old town look too. I would def recommend Steamboat if you were heading further in.
Podlettte
16-03-2009, 08:12 PM
the town of Park city was really lovely, but I really didn't think much of Deer valley (apart from the fashions on the field and the little people mover through the carpark to the lifts!) or park city, much preferred snowbird, powder mountain and snowbasin.

Loved Deer Valley and Park City, not a huge fan of the Canyons, but when I was there it was snowing 2inches per hour with 50km/h+ winds so it make it hard to give it a fair go. Skiing thigh deep powder also make it fun ;)
The food choices at Deer Valley are amazing!!!!
Steamboat was great too, but felt more crowded
Breckenridge is sensational with lots of terrain for everyone!
If I had to pick one to go back to it would be Breckenridge, but for now Mammoth Mountain and then onto Europe

Don't lock yourself into either one until you see whether it's sierra cement, or powder or blocking high!
Well Taxi if you are listening, Ross adores the sound of Kamchatka and is WAY keen, so BBQ at mine. May even get Rover and K10 at least listening.
Our French friends have just arrived back from there - they live here for 8 months of the year and at Serre Chevalier for 4 months - I teach their youngest son. They have found accomodation equating to $1500 p/w per family at Serre in a chalet to share, can get free ski gear hire for us for the whole time we are there and are offering us free ski lessons. So, just airfares and food and lift tix basically. We are excited thinking about it - skiing in France????!!!!!! I don't know if it will come off (not since +1 is full on into buying a Harley or equivalent very soon), but it's nice dreaming for a little while.

I have 2 ideas.
Grand Targhee and Jackson Hole - I dont want to travel around too much with Zacmeister.
Or
Europe - Into London recover at a friends for 2 days fly out to Zurich - off to Grindlewald for a 8 days, then off to Italy, Rome for sightseeing, for 3 days, then off to the Alps (to see relos, great to have relos in Dolomiti' and then back to rome to fly back to london to spend a w8 days travelling around seeing his side of the family..
So 8 days in Switzerland
9 in Italy
9 in London (& Suurrounds)

29-03-2009, 12:18 PM
Either sounds great!
So you'll be riding as well as seeing relos in the Alps in Italy I assume? Stupid question really!

She looks like she took on Mike Tyson, and doesn't want to be seen by anyone so I better buy some Paris Hilton/Jackie Onnassis whopping big sun glasses. No fractures thankfully, but there's a whopping hole in my wallet. At least Ski Rescue was free (and I made a donation. They deserve a standing ovation). Oh and about snowboarders ...they weren't involved but they look guilty.
We're now at Squaw Valley - missed an 11.30am ski around session with Jonny Mosely. Aaargh. took the scenic route around the lake. Georgeous. But its top to bottom skiing, with 3' of snow around the heated pool too.

One tip is to look at trip reports, or google resort reviews on ski websites so you get a feel for a place. Then subscribe to the mountain's and airlines' email alerts in case there's deals. The place I'm at at Squaw has ski arounds with guides, a great friendly Masters ski around, and bbq dinners and wine'n'cheese get togethers by the pool. The unit is tiny, but overall its the best (and cheapest) one I got.
