Can I take the chargers for my various cameras, laptop etc onto the plane in my carry on luggage. Will not use them but well they are carried in my camera bag for convenience but am worried they might think the plug with its 3 prongs could be used as a weapon?

Why risk it, pack them with the stowed luggage, as once it has been checked through and they say you can't take them as carry on, you have no choice but to throw them in a bin.

My backpack that I take everywhere with me has several chargers leads and plugs in it including converters. Never an issue.

Friend left today flying QF.
He was charged for an extra bag because he had skis in a bag, boots in another, a small carry on and his checked clothes bag.
Unfortunately his skibag was already checked so he couldn't slip the boots in with the skis.
Oh and they unzipped the skibag to ckeck that there were no clothes and only one pair of skis.

not for a ski set chunks, we rang to check and were told 1 pair of skis 1 bag
That's worrying.
I've flown QF many times with a double ski bag containing 1 pair of skis/poles/boots and chockers of clothes and other equipment.
Anything from 20-27kg, no check-in dramas. Of course that leaves only hand luggage.

So a family using Qantas can't just take one ski bag each of his and hers' own boots, poles, and clothes????
For as long as I've been checking, the QF rules for snow sports have always specified one kit, sans clothes etc.
Anything beyond that has been a bonus. Same on JQ/AC/JAL/AirNZ/Delta/ANA/Cathay, IME.
A requirement honoured in its breach, at least until now.

SA, I've always done the same...My 'kit' has always been 2pr of skis in the one bag...apparently now they are checking for the one pair.
Vet, yeah each passenger is allowed one kit but you cannot share IOW not allowed one skibag with 2pr skis between two pax. Must be two skibags.
Anyway, I'm off to buy a couple of bags big enough to fit 1pr skis, 1pr poles and 1pr boots.
Leaving Sunday.
Silliness really. Enforcement of a skis-only rule only ends up increasing the number of bags to handle/lose.
I just checked the Jetstar conditions.
On my reading their conditions don't include a skis only requirement. You just have to make sure you stay within the weight limit and that the skis are 'packed appropriately' before check-in. So that would seem to be ok for skis/clothes etc in one bag.
I've also checked QF rules. They don't say that the bag containing the one kit has to contain nothing else; only that the kit has to be "protected in a ski bag".
Where the combined weight of the kit and other checked baggage goes over limit you get charged the excess baggage.
It would be worth taking a copy of the baggage conditions with you to the airport.
This is under the international weight system.
Where was your friend flying, Sailor?
I have 3 ski bags, 1 per person, that I hoped would have everything per person: ie no need for suitcases.
but carting 3 suitcases as well is a royal pain.
So looks like per person we'll just have tons more stuff to take.

SA he was flying to the US and Utah.
After previous dramas with airlines and baggage, he even had the printout from their website to help clear up any problems but that made no difference.
Don't know what the excuse was.
I'll be ringing today to see what the 'current' story is.

Just checked the QF site for alterations
"Snow Ski/Snowboard
One snow ski or snowboard kit consists of one pair of skis or one snowboard, one pair of stocks, and one pair of ski or snowboard boots. Snow skis and snowboards must be protected in a ski bag."
"Limit of one kit per person. The kit can be included as one piece in your free baggage allowance. If the one kit is in addition to the total free allowance, a special rate of 33% of the standard additional baggage rates will apply. Additional equipment is accepted at standard additional baggage rates."
While they don't prohibit clothes in the skibag, they do specify what the 'kit' consists of.
So I guess that's it
One 'kit'
One carry-on bag
One checked bag

I'll be ringing today to see what the 'current' story is. Nth America, so on the 'piece' system. 2 pieces is the standard allowance, with dimensional restrictions. The snow sports one-kit thing is an exception to the dimension restrictions; for Nth America it effectively is a kit-only rule, and that kit gets counted as a piece for the 2 piece quota.
The excess (3rd bag) should've been charged at 1/3rd the normal excess baggage rate (A$144) ie. $48 per piece.
How is it that the ski stuff was already checked/gone? Couldn't it be retrieved?

We are entitled to 10 bags of luggage so what if we use the double bag with 2 ski sets and allow for it to be counted as 2 bags within the 10 bag limit?
I am thinking I am going to have to call Qantas on this :(

Chunks, It seems as though you cannot share a bag.One kit in one bag each.

Chunks, you better hire a truck or leave your beauty kit at home.
United's site says 1 bag is only for poles and skiis, another is for boots only, and then there's the suitcase. No wonder Paris Hilton has heaps of bags - she's a skier.
We flew Qantas to Tokyo on Jan 11th - 4 people and we had 2 checked bags and 2 double ski bags with our ski clothes and thermals as padding for the 4 of us. No problems going through but we were with Qantas club so I don't know if that made any difference.

There are threads about this each year, and I don't know why people continue to stress about it!! I've never come across an airline that's blinked twice (touch wood) at the luggage we take which is generally a wheelie bag/case plus board bag each, and the board bags always have 2 board set ups, boots and outerwear plus other bits and pieces. It seems as long as you're close enough, it's good enough.
As for rechargers, cables etc in hand luggage, why? If it's not used on the plane chuck in your checked. On the way home from NZ last August a mate had all his cables for everything in his backpack. We told him not to, and sure enough going through security they pulled him up and went through everything. They let him through, but said they had to check as it gave a really strange picture on the xray, and who knows what sort of cables they were - could have contained a red wire and a white wire for all they knew.

What happens if your bags get lost ?
Along with not having clothes, you now cannot take any photos or charge your mobile.
You can take chargers as carryon, NEVER put anything like cameras or charges in checked baggage

Why thank you smile.gif
I have had enough lost bags in my time so I plan on losing at least 1 bag for a few days...
So another piece of gold smile.gif
Assuming you are a couple travelling, you will usually take 2 if not 3 or 4 bags.
Spread your clothes out between each bag, so if one bag goes missing you can still do pretty much everything.
EG: I have two ski jackets and pants
One set in one bag and the other in the 2nd bag
Spread socks/jocks/beanies/thermals between all bags
You get the idea smile.gif
I can't wait for the reps to pull a pair of undies out from each of my boots after a month. That'll teach those underpant inspectors!
(Hmmm, why do my feet smell????)

I have to disagree with your first paragraph as I know people who have been pulled up and told to either unpack stuff from a ski bag (on qantas) or take stuff out of carry on as it was over weight, which made their luggage overweight and they were charged excess by a couple of kgs. I really think it depends on who you get and the type of day they are having or if you are a couple, group of chicks, or a group of guys.

I'm going to be very careful with my packing for this trip with Jetstar. I plan on taking my boot bag on the plane as my hand luggage and pack my charged camera and ski pants with it. I'll carry on a jacket that can be worn to ski in if my backpack gets lost. Just need to make sure it's under the carry on limit. Last trip is was half a kilo over and they made me check it in.
So, worst case scenario is they loose my backpack and I have to buy some ski socks, gloves, beanie and fleecy and maybe some thermals, plus hire some skis and poles. The cost of all this would be covered by my insurance.
My skis and poles are 5.5kg, so that gives me a decent 14.5kg for everything else, which will be easy.
JQ carry on limit is 10 kilos, I think?
(Excludes QF codeshare on JQ flight though)

Again - If your bag is missing you need to go through the hassle of finding chargers for your mobile phone and cameras. Not something you need to do.

I prefer to take the advice of someone who's travelled more than I have! Sorry, but whoever has given you that advice is wrong.
The number of bags that go missing and/or delayed is far too high to risk not having your mobile charger and camera charger when you need it.
