Well, the time has come. My 24 month WHP visa has been granted, I have resigned from work, my one way plane ticket has been bought (tonight) and I am on the way to Revelstoke this season, and will arrive in early November.

Can't wait to get out there!

Watch this space for reports and photos!

... and if you'll be there, look out for the Snowatch hoodies!

If anyone else is planning on coming to revelstoke just send me a PM and i can help work out some of the details, give you any extra information you may need etc.

my advice would be (if flying into vancouver) is to take a flight to kelowna rather than taking a bus, a 1 hr flight and a 2 hr bus is much better than 10-14(depending on road conditions)

Revelstoke, up to 3 years ago was a small town on the trans Canada, the main influx of tourist were sledders during winter. Most trips were short stays so there are plenty of short term accommodation available. Longer term stays is where the problem lies.

When the ski hill started last year they were 500-800 beds short during peak times(long weekends). So prices started to rise on rental accommodation, a 4 bedroom house is likely to set you back 400 a week, fine if you have 4 room mates. This is pretty much the standard price across the board here in Revelstoke.

As the village isn't completed yet the staff accommodation is non existent and its almost everyone for themselves, things might change as we get closer to the season but for what i have seen, for this year at least, that there will be no staff accommodation.

60 month US Visa???

How on earth did you get that?

And where do I sign up?

skijacski
09-09-2008, 06:41 PM
It is a non-immigration visa, and allows you to stay for 6 months in the USA for each visit and is valid for 5 years.

http://canberra.usembassy.gov/consular/visas/

You need to have an interview for it and that needs to be set up, pay fee etc.

You need to have one of these if you have been a naughty driver and booked by police or have ANY police record!

Tobi
09-09-2008, 07:08 PM
So you can go in for 6 months, leave for a week then go in for 6 months again and repeat for 5 years?

Or is there a certain amount of time you have to leave for?

This is seriously making me think about heading to the states.

skijacski
10-09-2008, 07:12 AM
You just can't leave to Canada or Mexico and a few other places, I can't find the info. So if you flew to UK, or Europe that is allowed, it is quite cheap too.

This is not a work visa!

I tell you it's easier to get into the vault at the Reserve Bank than going through security to the embassy window......... 2 security checks, and Aus Fed Police escort you in the lift from Level 10 to Level 59 for the interview, and then the glass on the 'teller type' window is 3 times as thick as a bank teller window ! Got finger printed 3 times for verification it was me LOL

You can be turned away at the border, and sent home on the next plane. If your records come up with the passport and the USA systems which have changed, you will be in strife. Safer for you to get the visa than to be sorry and sent back home.

Skijacski is right. I asked what would have happened if I didn't tell them about a particular offence (because when I originally told them, they laughed and said I'm very honest for declaring). They said if they found out, you will be deported and not allowed back in for X years. They said ALWAYS declare things even if they seem stupid (like mud/dirt on your ski boots when landing back in AUS)

Podlettte

This is not a work visa! From what you are saying you have to leave the North American continent.

+1 and I got the extended tourist visa ("B-2 visitor visa") allowing us to stay in the US for either 12 months or 5 years - in the end we just chose the 12 month one, although in retrospect we should have got the 5 year one.

Our visa made no mention of having to leave after 6 months and then coming straight back. Theoretically we could have stayed in the USA for the entire 12 months.

There are two parts to the non-immigrant visa fee: the application fee ($120 - pay at any post office - cash only) and the issuance fee.(free for 12 months or around $40 for 5 years)
(note: prices might have changed since we did it in 2007)

We found the process pretty quick. We basically made an appointment, turned up with all the required paperwork (passports, photo, bank statements to prove we could support ourselves, etc). The interview took like 2 minutes - in the end they didnt even look at 90% of the stuff we bought along. Then again it may depend on who interviews you. Our interview was for 9:30am but they were running late by about an hour (typical embassy stuff i guess!). We gave them our passport and they posted it to us the next day with the visa stamped our passports.........

Snow Yeti

My driving offence was over 5 years ago and I have to declare this for life. I had to declare this on several gov paperwork, it's such a pain in the *** because I have to get a RTA driving record and JP witness each time !!!

kort - I have the 5 year one, you get a combined B1/B2. It doesn't say anything about 6 months, but it has a R which is restricted, notsure what that means. The fee is $155.65 at the post office and the 5 year issuance fee is $28.50. Both prices are in AUD.

I forgot my bank statements, my car rego papers, evberything! They never asked for it !!! but then again I had 5 interviews about my driving offence! Thankfully it wasn't DUI !! I would have been denied ...... and yes I got mine next day like you kort smile.gif

Brumby Jack, mine was a speeding fine.

I emailed the US consulate in sydney and this is the reply I got.

Dear Ms. Podlettte. ,

Thank you for your recent inquiry.

Applicants with any drink-driving charges are advised to apply for a visa and not to use the Visa Waiver Program.

Depending on your individual situation, at the time of your interview you may be referred to a panel physician for evaluation. If this requirement applies to you, you will be supplied with the names and contact details of the panel physician along with a letter explaining the need for this examination.

If you are ineligible to travel under the VWP, you will need to schedule an appointment to apply for a non-immigrant U.S. visa. Please consult the VisaPoint service and FAQ’s found on the link below: http://aus.us-visaservices.com/Forms/default.aspx
All applicants must appear in person for an interview at the U.S. Consulate General serving their state as listed below. Australian citizens or permanent residents under 14 years of age or over 79 years of age, and applicants for diplomatic and official visas, may not need to appear in person.
Residents of New South Wales, ACT, and Queensland should apply to the Consulate General in Sydney
Residents of Victoria, South Australia, Northern Territory, and Tasmania should apply to the Consulate General in Melbourne
Residents of Western Australia should apply to the Consulate General in Perth
Applicants must first book an appointment for interview online via our website at http://canberra.usembassy.gov/consular/niv.html using the "VisaPoint Service" under the heading "Part Three: How do I apply?"
Kind regards
AMVISA
U.S. Consulate General, Sydney
-CC-
Note: You should never pay for travel arrangements (e.g., airfare, hotels) without having a visa in your possession. The U.S. Consulate General accepts no responsibility if you do so. We are able to issue most visas within two business days of interview; however, we are unable to guarantee the issuance of a U.S. visa before a fixed travel date. You risk significant financial losses if you ignore this advice. So, from their own words it's only if your driving offense is related to drink driving, not any offense.

follow up....

Dear Ms. podlettte.,

I apologize about the confusion of information that was given to you.

Travelers with minor traffic offenses which did not result in an arrest and/or conviction for the offense may travel visa free, provided they are otherwise qualified.
Kind regards

a driving offense such as mine, bumping into the back of someone is not a criminal conviction, just to be on the safe side I did ring my local police station who thought I was loopy.

But SJS was talking about the US, not Canada! I know you're going to Canada, but for the US I don't need a non immigrant visa, simple as that, they have confirmed that for me, they being the US consulate in Sydney.

I am waiting for a reply from the Canadian consulate in Sydney regarding a neg driving for me and a speeding offense for someone else.

will post results when I get them, as their website doesn't mention if these are offenses punishable by conviction over there.

skijacski
11-09-2008, 02:59 PM
Pods when you said neg driving, I thought NEG Driving, which you go to court for, but if you do DUI, that is one you need a visa for.

I know of one person who was sent back and had booked a tour! Lost his whole money and insurance does not pay for it as it is up to the individual to check they have the right visas etc.

Always better to be safe than sorry, I get the 5 year visa as it is so much easier and I have never had a traffic ticket or parking ticket only an aeroplane ticket!

I would have thought that if speeding could stop you from getting into either USA or Canada then hardly anyone from OZ would get in ;)

Podlettte
11-09-2008, 04:08 PM
you don't go to court for negligent driving as a rule, only if there is a criminal offense attached to it.

I ran into the back of the car in front, that is negligent driving.

the guy who crashed into the back of me and wrote my car off (seperate incident) was also charged with neg driving, however he was also charged with other stuff due to the accident and taken to court, so his offense is a criminal record, mine isn't.

My brother was knocked back on a tourist visa because in their words " being single he was a high risk candidate. And that he might over stay a try to get work."
Even though he has a house and a mortgage in Aus. And has worked for the same company for 20 years. He was also advised no to appeal in case he was black marked. And then not be able to get a visa if he was sent to the US for training by his employer who happens to be an American based company.

Be a part of history……..Enter to Win a Season Pass by Helping us Name our New Chairlift!

Revelstoke Mountain Resort has a lot to boast about for this coming season, including North America’s Longest Vertical Descent with over 5,620 vertical feet (1,713 vertical metres) of lift-accessed terrain, and the addition of a new high-speed quad chair in the North Bowl area – but we need your help! Be a part of history by coming up with a great name for our new chairlift, and you could win a Season Pass for the 2008-2009 season.

Submit your entry by September 21, 2008. The winning name will be announced and chosen by the end of September. If the winning name has been submitted by more than one person, a draw will take place to choose the winner. By indicating your interests on the contest form, you will be added to our e-newsletter list and will receive information on the resort progress, current events, and special offerings. http://www.revelstokemountainresort.com/revelstokemtn/contest.aspx

ok, final reply after I clarified with them that I had a minor driving offense, and explained it in detail and listed the proper references etc.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Based on the information you have provided, you should be able to travel on the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) and as long as you meet all the requirements you will not be required to apply for a U.S. Visa.

There is no application process as such. VWP travelers must present a completed and signed I-94W Nonimmigrant Visa Waiver Arrival-Departure Record to U.S. officials at the port of entry. I-94W forms are free and often provided by airlines or cruise ships prior to arrival in the United States. Forms will also be available at your port of entry.

Please refer to our website to see if you fully qualify, and for Frequently Asked Questions about the Program:
http://canberra.usembassy.gov/consular/visawaiver.html

If after reviewing the website and attached information, you find you do not qualify for the VWP you must apply for a U.S. Visa. Most short term visitors traveling for business or pleasure apply for a B1/B2 Business/Tourism visa. Further details can be found on our website at http://sydney.usconsulate.gov/consular/visabus-plsr.html

Further details of how to apply can be found at http://sydney.usconsulate.gov/consular/niv.html

Best regards

AMVISANote: this only applies to my situation, which is me: Neg driving, NO crimminal charge or arrest, other person speeding ticket.

this is for a tourist situation, NOT moving their to live/work.

Hi guys, we are hopefully heading to Revelstoke as well this season but just don't know how the job situation is there. We already have visa's organised. Has anyone had any luck getting jobs? And is seasonal accommodation still a tight market?

Oh and how close is the town itself from the ski lifts?

Any info grately appreciated

Thanks

i can field this one. jobs at the moment are very tight(the quietest i've ever seen the town) once the hill opens up on nov 27(or 29 cant remember) there will be plenty of work to be had. even sooner once the sledding starts up.

long term accom is in very short supply if you can get a few friends together and share a house is the way to go.

from the post office the, new, base of the ski hill is about 5-6 km. there will be a shuttle bus running everyday of the season $2 a trip. last year it was weekends and public holidays only.

If things don't work out in revelstoke you can always be in the area golden(Kicking Horse) banff(Sun Shine,Lake Louise,Norqay) vernon(Silver Star) kelowna(big white) kamloops(sun peaks). all within 5 hrs drive and all have resorts.

PS did i confuse sunshine and sun peaks again? oh well you get the idea if i did.

I have a bell and it doesn't seem to scare them away. They just seem to stare at you, although I am walking a lot at around midnight, to get home from work. I didn't get spray but I might, it's so late now though that I am thinking bear spray /or/ more vodka. I haven't heard that bears stay awake but I have been told that if you see a bear in winter be extremely careful as it may be awake as it's ill/dying and thus desperate for food.

the bell probably makes the bear aware something is there rather than scaring it away. Better it is aware you're there than stumbling across it scaring the crap out of it!

The photos are from my iPhone camera. My normal camera isn't charging so I am left with it.
As for the bear bell, it is supposed to make them aware of you, it still seems odd, like somehow I am ringing a dinner bell.
In the car pic when we were leaving it took a long time to turn the car around, I think a 15 point turn. The lower snow had melted and formed an icy mud mix.

Animals dont like humans. The bell just makes a racket and in general it will keep a bear out of sight. The bears in BC can get quite large. If you are hiking alone then a bell helps. Bears arent the only animals there either Yeti. Some bears dont sleep because there are food sources about. I would think in that 99% sleep because at about 6000 feet where they decide to rest there is only snow.
Saying all this an attack is rare but a bell is cheap too.

I found one of them!!!

A guy walks into this sporting goods store in Alaska, immediately spies a rather haggard-looking old salt of a store clerk sitting by the cash register.

"Hear ya got a lotta' bears 'round here?"

"Yep," answers the clerk.

"Big bears?"

"Yep."

"Mean bears?"

"Yep."

"Black bears?"

"Yep."

"GRIZZLIES???!"

"Yep."

"Got any bear bells?"

"What's dat?"

"You know, them little dingle-bells ya put on yer backpack so bears know yer in the perimiter so's they can runs away ..."

"Yep. Over yonder ..."

"Great. I'll take one fer black bears, and one fer grizzlies. Say, how'd you know if yer in black bear country anyway?"

"Look fer scatt."

"Oh. Well, how how'd you know if there's GRIZZLIES????!"

"Look fer scatt."

"You just said that!"

"Yeah. But grizzly scatt's different."

"Well now, just what's IN grizzly scatt that's different?"

"Bear bells."

I have read Pods responses from the consulate. My wife had a traffic fine for going straight ahead in the centre lane of a roundabout. Skichic would know the one near the Landscape place. They then changed the markings to be clearer 2 weeks later and from that my wife would have been in the right. It was well over 5 years ago. Both of us (touch wood) have never had a speeding fine but I take it that if you get one and it is minor going from Pods consulate response we will be ok?

BLurdy I hope she is ok cause if she is not my passport won't be as well!

I'd be a just a bit ticked off if I had to spend another $200 replacing my passport which has another 6-7 yrs on it just cause the silly paranoid freak show over there in the US demands a certain type of passport.

Chunky, responses from the consulate were same or next day, so for peace of mind, why not email them yourself? From what I was told, it there wasn't a conviction, or the situation wouldn't have incurred a conviction in the US/Canada (which ever you are entering) then you'll be fine. YOu still have to pre register for US travel more than 72 hours prior to arriving in the US

chunky I dunno, just declare whatever, you can never be too safe! I asked them what would have happened if I didn't declare my speeding, they said if they found out, I could be deported and inadmissible forever !!

The list of crimes of moral turpitude that are reasons for exclusion from the U.S. is also quite detailed. The most common types of crimes involving moral turpitude that would make you inadmissible are murder, manslaughter, rape, theft, bribery, forgery, aggravated battery, prostitution, and fraud. At this time, driving under the influence, breaking and entering, disorderly conduct and simple assault are not considered crimes that make a person inadmissible to the U.S.
