211 days, 0 hours, 38 minutes & 10 seconds until opening day.
Not that I'm counting or anything.... smile.gif

Any & all questions on BW will be answered in here!
The "street" clan will be there from 01 Jan to 01 Feb. Staying at Timbers #104. We won't be hard to find & all are welcome to call in and say hi!
& a couple of my favourites to kick things off....

Goin nowhere at present - got China Airlines flights to Vancouver held in our name though, no deposit paid yet so not accountable to keep them, but they are booked so far. If we take them up, we would arrive at BW on 31st Dec and leave Canada on the 18th Jan. How about you? Whatcha up to?

All set in concrete in the Street house.
Air Canada to Kelowna Jan 1, couple of days there to shop & look around before heading up the hill on Jan 3. Leave for Aus on Feb 1.
Plus...... currently in negotiations with a company in Canada for me to fly in/fly out on a 4 week on 2 week off roster ex Sydney to Toronto/ Edmonton/ Vancouver..... do that for a year or so & they'll look at a sponsorship for immigration & they'll cough up the $$ to bring the family over..... Settle at a place of my choice & have the roster go to a 2 on, 2 off set up.
Fingers, toes, eyes, etc, etc are well & truly crossed.

Tentative SIC date is Wednesday Jan 14
What exactly is a SIC date? I am imagining a slide day for anyone who wants to join? What does SIC stand for? Slide in convoy? Slide in cooperation? Slide in common? Slide in conjunction? Slide in coincidence? Ski it collectively? Skiing is cool? Synchronised idiotic carving?

No,..... it's a term from the "dark side" , going back to when the site was called "Sno Info".
Whenever there was a get together on the snow it was called a "Sno Info Conference" .... or "SIC"
& yes,.... it usually ties in nicely to how one tends to feel the following day !!
Over in BW, last years "SIC" saw a "first tracks" session, breakfast, free skiing, Ski races, Wine tasting, Apre's, ...... & a formal dinner/fundraiser to benefit disabled skiers. There was a "single Malt" session to finish off the night.
All part of the fun.

Has anyone stayed at Trailside? Both visits to BW we've stayed at Whitefoot, but for next year we're looking at Trailside.
Any comments?
Also we're planning on heading over to either Silver Star or Apex after BW. Haven't been to either before, what would you guys recommend>

We stayed at Trailside on our first trip in Jan 07.
It's in the lower village & about a 5 - 8 minute level walk from Happy Valley.
Good level of accomodation.
You can ski into the units, but you'll have a 4 minute walk to get to where you can ski down to the Gondola.
If your budget will stretch to it, I'd suggest Spyglass, Timbers or Southpoint. True ski in/out and great access to Happy Valley & the Gondola.
You'll be able to ski SS on the same pass as the one you'll get from BW.
How long are you going for ?? ...... an earlybird season pass may also be your best bet.

Thanks for that. we've been quoted $1680 for 3 people for 7 nights with a private hot tub at Trailside. Can't really spend anymore than that, oherwise we were going to go with $1614 for no hot tub at Chateau BW.
We're going to BW for 7 nights then to either SS or Apex for 7 nights.
cheers

I am thinking of heading to BW and or SS early next year. I have a few questions...
1. January for 2 weeks or February (after Valentines Day as we are florists) ?
2. Is it worth doing a week in Big White and then a week at Silver Star?
3. Where to stay? MUST be somewhere quiet, we go on holidays to relax and ski NOT to party hard and make noise!! Doesn't have to be anywhere fancy but somewhere nice would be good!!
4. Who to fly? Any stopovers recommended?
Thanks in advance for your help and hope the questions aren't too monotonous.

Some questions back at you smile.gif
1. Skier levels ?
2. Kids ??
3. Budget for Accomodation ?
Doing a week at each place can add to your budget somewhat, but if you spend 2 weeks at BW, I can guarantee that you won't get bored !!
Avoid any connections through LA like the plague. Air Canada direct from Syd - Vancouver is a good run...... then just get an Air Canada Jazz flight from Vancouver to Kelowna.
You can do the trip via Tokyo too if you wish.
In Feb, you need to be mindfull of Presidents week..... it gets insanely busy then.

Slow day at work.....
The damn surgeon has put Jo's appointment back to July 30.....
But his office has already sent through the paperwork for the knee reconstruction & made a tentative booking at the private hospital he visits for late august.
Consequently,..... with this years BW trip almost certainly off the table...... I'm considering the odd weekend trip here in Aus....

Its chaos in here.
Bummer about the knee and the whole trip cancelled,I know how much you looked forward to it but 09/10 will be so much better for the waiting.
We too will be skiing local,we`ll do a week down at perisher just as soon as I get the workload under control.
ARE YOU FOR FREAKIN REAL????? You not at BW???? Don't suppose I can have yuor lovely unit at Timbers can I? I am there 30 Jan to 10 Jan - definite! Jo will be right to ski in Jan!!!! If not, put the knee up and enjoy the view and lovely quiet time on the condo!
main street

Fraid so Xena.... :( :(
Bruce Caldwell (Merv Cross's equal) does all the League players knees here in Newcastle & his minimum rehab for a non professional skier is 8 months...... (& he would prefer 12 months). Jo pushed the edge of the envelope by skiing on her other reconstructed knee after 9 months, but that was after we used a personal trainer 3 days a week for those 9 months.
Hehehehe..... I didn't even try & float the idea that Jo put her feet up for 4 weeks while we all went nuts in the powder...... just wouldn't be fair.
On the upside though...... I've got a booking set for Dec 5, 2009 through to Jan 29, 2010 in our unit at Timbers...... 55 straight ski days. Doesn't quite make up for not going this year, but it sure helps !!

55 ski days........that would burn the thighs. Not to mention the dent in Bc liquor supplies,I think I might buy shares in BC liquor.
On another note and not meaning to rub salt into the wound,I was able to swap our crappy ff flights for some more direct ones.We originally had Air Pacific Syd-Nadi-Lax (21hrs)and return Qantas Lax-melb-syd.Now we have Qantas Syd-aukland-lax(16hrs) and lax-syd (14hrs) a small victory but we are travelling with a 2 year old.

NO...that is a huge victory considering the 2yr old.
We are travelling this year with a 12mth and 5yr old. Should be interesting. Doing the direct Syd-Vancouver though YAY !!

2.No kids. Just 2 adults.
3.Nothing too expensive (only need a place to rest our heads when not skiing) but not into "budget" accomodation. We always find budget to mean NOISY!!
Have skied in BC (Whistler) before and went Air Canada both times. Not interested in travelling via Tokyo (lived in Japan for 3 years) but would go via Taiwan or Tokyo if it was cheaper!!!

OK,.....
Have a look here:
http://www.alluradirect.com/1059/index.cfm?contentID=welcome
It's a unit at Spyglass. In the lower village, true ski in / ski out & great access to Happy Valley.
Not bad pricing either..... & the hot tub is a must !!
You can easily do the 2 weeks based at BW & simply do a couple of day trips to SS ( The staff at BW can organise this BTW ).
BW is an intermediate skiers heaven too.
Mid (ish) Jan will see a drop in airfare costs as well.
2 weeks means that you'll save quite a bit of $$ by getting an earlybird season pass each (on sale now,..... until Sep 1 )..... & the pass gets you discounts at places all over the mountain too.
Cheers..... Ian

Mid January is sounding good. (Will get us out of town for the damn Country Music Festival anyway) LOL
I did have a look at the prices on Air China and they are about $500 cheaper than flying Syd-Vancouver Direct. Do you recommend booking accomodation through an agent (we have always done this in the past ) or try doing it through BW itself?
I think the airlines are good through an agent as the can arrange all the internal flights and transfers?? Or do you do all this yourself?
We have travelled over there before but want to stay a few weeks this time so are looking abit more "budget" this time

The only thing I do via an agent is the airfares.
The link I put up is for a place handled by Allura Direct & they are very good.
Doing the earlybird season passes yourself direct with the resort is a very simple process too.
Have a look at the bunch of links I'll quote in the next post !!

Hey azkaban
My advice will no where compare to Main Streets, but I thought I'd let you know what we did too. We booked our airfares (Air Canada) with Mogul Ski World and they were heaps cheaper than other agents and AC site itself.
Also when it was just 2 of us at Big White we stayed at Whitefoot lodge, the fitout of the room was new and it's right in the centre of the village with an amazing view. Extremely cheap prices. Both times there we didn't experience too much noise at all.
We also got some extra nights for free (stay 14 pay 12 etc) and extra lift days too.
We compared the agents prices with doing it ourselves and the agents came out slightly lower.

BTW we're paying $568 AUD for a 12 of 14 day lift pass. The early bird season pass on BW site is $645 CAD + 5% tax.

Thanks for the added info bbd's. So you used mogul ski for both the airfares and the accommodation or just the airfares? If so, which agent did you book the accommodation through?
Cheers mate

May I ask who you booked through? Did you use a travel company or did you do it all yourself?
Cheers
Mick </font>[/QUOTE]You can book on China Airlines website.
I booked through Flight Centre, because website only allows you to book 4 people at a time and we have 5. They gave me a $20 cheaper price per person than the CA website. But, then they slugged my some percentage for paying by credit card, that ends up about the same anyway.

Today an agent with Travelplan said he could do internals from Vancouver to Kelowna for $261 each, but you have to have an international flight with a Star Alliance carrier - which China Airlines is not. Agents best price for AC flights then was about $450 each. AC website booked by self - $435. All prices quoted are AUD and taxes included.
What I want to know is - can anyone tell me if I can get the cheaper flights somehow?
Can I get lift passes with kids ski free deal from anywhere without having to have accom booked with them???
Allura Direct Azkaban! It's worth the look. My friends are going to BW around same time as us. They are paying $3412 for accom and lifts for 7 days (approx $487 pd). We are paying $5100 for 11 days (about $463 pd). Our accom has one more bedroom than theirs, they only have a kitchenette, we have the full kitchen. They have no laundry facilities, we have one in suite. We are staying 4 nights in peak time (New Years) at nearly double the cost per night, they are only staying one. Better value at Allura or Big White Vacation Homes (aligned with Allura) trust me.
I used Allura last year to go to Whistler also and saved $2000 on accom compared to travel agent quote for same place. Have booked for BW and Whistelr for Dec/Jan. And paid deposits - we are going.

Hi Xena !!
So,..... can I talk you into a 09/10 trip ?? ;) ;)
Maybe - but there is a whole big wide world of ski resorts out there that I have yet to experience. I'd love to do something in Europe or US, but may end up doing either Japow or nothing - for us it'll have been 2 big trips in less than 12 months.

Am checking out flights and accommodation through agents and online now. Thanks for all the advice MS Xena and BBD.
Only problem is the +1 now wants to do the "lets track our celtic heritage and do Scotland and Ireland" trip next year.
Maybe we can all meet up in January 2010. Only problem is that Canada will be crazy busy with the Olympics that year.

We found it easier to let her do all the organising for us!

BBD - come Jan 09 to BW or Whistler - I'll be at BW 30/12 to 10/1 and Whistler from 10/1 to 17/1.
We got other friends at both places too! They will overlap our stay by 7 days at BW and 3 days at Whistler - they're going to Silverstar in between.

Azkaban,
There's not been any kickbacks of that nature & I don't expect or really want any....... I do what I do because we just adore the place.
We do get treated rather well when we are there, but we tend to get involved with everything too, so it helps out the mountain a bit as well ..... & the activities guys usually looked to our mob to get things rolling with "audience participation" (something we were rather good at apparrently ;) ;) ).... All part of the fun. :D
We get "staff" discounts all over the mountain ... even though we're not really staff.
We were lucky enough to be their "feature family" on the float in their Christmas parade last season too.
I've got a full page article running in the "Snowy Times" here at BW's request as well. ;)
Want me to use your staff discount for you in your absence?

Correct. For families I would def go BW. Whistler is just enormous and for me would be better once the rest of my family can ski more of it.
My family can ski all of Whistler - so - when yours can - BW or Whistler?

Awwww Xena that's a toughie. Whistler offers more but I like the smaller village feel to BW so I guess BW but only by a whooshka. Accomodation wise you get a much better ski in ski out deal at BW. I prefer my own house rather rather than being in a big lodge/hotel and BW has oodles of it from the main village across to the Snowpines Estates.
Well - having said all that - I'm doing both - 2 weeks at BW and by then we might be beginning to get bored, so we will tehn go for a week at Whistler. A week at Whsitler aint much - but I agree with the accom comments - that's why 2 weeks at BW for the "holiday" aswell as the skiing and then a week of just the skiing at Whistler.

Bear in mind that this is from early in a "slow start" season...... We arrived to a base of 75 cm & about 16 runs open (mind you.... the combined length of those 16 runs was still well longer than the combined length of all 48 or so "named" runs at falls creek.... :D ).
By the time we left nearly all of the 118 runs were open...... & we'd had more than 20 "powder" days :D

I am buying my season passes in a week or two and getting my half price lessons too. Wish the Canadian dollar would go back up - wish I had paid for everything 6 weeks ago.
