Now I know you lot go on trips often, and I have to say, that in the last year, the legs family have made up for a lot of lost time ourselves.

Surely there is some sort of auto printout packing list eh?

I found a bit of one on another forum, and I have a few things organised in my head, but gee it would be nice to just print out a list the week before we go, pack the bags in a well ordered fashion, and go.

We are a family of five!

We are having a two day stop in Sapporo on the way to a week in Niseko.

I'm thinking to try and send the bulk of our luggage ahead and fit our sapporo gear into carry on for each of us (but then there's the vanity bag with associated liquids that has to go in main luggage, apres boots which I imagine we'll need in Sapporo?).

doin my head in.

Any organised people out there? you know those minds that can input all this info and spit out a list of how many bags, what to pack in each and what not to forget? I don't.

skis, boots, ski gear, icebreaker tops, jeans, undies, socks, toiletries. Wear hiking boots and comfy trackies on plane, with down jacket in carry-on.

Done.

Sounds like you're taking too much stuff Legs.

Legolas, the liquids things do go in the checked lugguage for the international flight but for domestic in Japan they need to be in the carry on. That is for JAL. Our travel agent told us this and I had it confirmed by JAL yesterday.
The packing thing is very hard, I leave tomorrow for Niseko and its hard to think cold clothes when it so hot here.

Legs - Think of Sapporo as a ski resort without chair lifts asyou'll be wearing the same clothes there during the day and night as you would for apres wear in Niseko. It's very cold in sapporo. The kids can wear their apres boots on the plane can't they or am I totally clueless about beasties?

Where you are staying you'll have drying facilities, so don't go overboard as if something gets a bit wet it can hang in the drying room for an hour and it'll be dry smile.gif

You stopping over in Tokyo Legs?

1) Take one set of cloths for each person and some basic toileteries in carry on bag.

2) Take empty suitcases and credit card with plenty of credit.

3) Shop your brains out in Tokyo and Hokkaido.

100ml max for each bottle/container with a total max of 1L all in the 1 zip lock bag. Buy shampoo and stuff when you get there if doing what BH suggests, and most other things are the right size or you can get nalgene type bottles to squirt stuff into

I think Hiking boots are a pain in Japan, they come off and go on so much the lacing gets arduous. I prefer to use slip on mocs....I have some North Face ones, but Merrell make some good ones too!

I wore my Lowa goretex lined low hiking shoes last year, but did the laces up losely so I could slip them off easily. worked a treat and their grip was better than any other shoe I've had on ice, only got caught on one spot walking down our street, so I sat down and slid down the sheet ice road :D

doing a search on the topic myself... found this on epicski, credits to skimangojazz and jstraw

Here’s my pack list, been using and upgrading it for years. I don't bring all this on all trips, but print it out and have it while I pack. With the list I can pack in under an hour and trust I didn't forget anything important (like the bathing suit - most often forgotten pre list days.

My carry on is ski boots, goggles, ski pants and one set of ski underwear – also toiletries (whatever I can’t deal with waiting for if they lose it.)

Skis

Poles

Ski Boots

Ski Pants

Ski underwear inc. socks

Gloves

Ski tops

Sweaters/Fleece

Neck Gator

Hat

Helmet

Goggles

Toiletries

Flip Flops (for hot tub/pool)

Bathing suit (don’t want to have to buy one there!)

T shirts, shirts

Jeans, sweats

Sneakers

Extra eyeware, contact lens stuff, sunglasses

Room deodorant (shared bathroom)

Bathrobe

Pillow

Tickets, membership cards

Books/magazines

Pen paper

Sunblock

Vitamins, medications - first aid, motrin, tums, ice pack

Fanny pack, backpack, etc.

Cellphone charger

Camera, film, batteries

If I bring a laptop, long telephone cord to get to inconveniently placed phone jack. Possible extension cord for power too.

If I'm staying where I'll be able to cook I bring some coffee for the first morning, maybe an oatmeal package,etc. salt/pepper.

ON THE BUS

* Footwear

* Blankets or sleeping bag

* Pillow (or pillow case for jacket)

* Cards, small games, things to read

* Wear clothing you can sleep in (sweats make great bus clothes)

* Ski Jacket

* Coolie Cup for cans

* Toothbrush, toothpaste, mints for "bus breath"

* Small bag for personal items and medication (you can't get into luggage stored under the bus)

* Cash/travelers' checks/plastic

* Motion sickness pills (if needed)

* No wine! (causes sickness)

* No illegal substances

ON THE MOUNTAIN

* Skis, boots, poles (can be rented on-site or in Kansas City)

* 2 pair long underwear

* At least 2 pair ski socks (wash & alternate day-to-day)

* Bibs or ski pants

* Goggles and sunglasses

* Ski sweater, if desired

* Turtlenecks

* Ski jacket

* Wool hat

* Waterproof ski gloves or mittens

* Sunscreen, chapstick

* Fanny pack for carrying things

* Kleenex or handkerchief

* Credit card, money, identification

* Wind shirt or powder jacket for warmer weather

* Neck scarf or bandana

OFF THE MOUNTAIN

* Warm winter footwear

* Swimsuit and towel for hot tub

* Robe (to cover-up in group environment)

* Sleepwear

* Slacks or jeans (dress codes in ski areas are very casual)

* Shirts and sweaters (same as above)

* Camera and film

* Toilet articles

* Underwear, socks

* NO VALUABLES (leave the good jewelry at home)

* Best of all, a sense of humor: the unexpected DOES happen on ski trips!

Tobi,
I hear that you can get a private onsen for you and that special person.
When I was in Niseko last, 2 people from the pension I was in went to a public onsen and the attendants said they could arrange a private onsen for them. However, the attendant didn't realise that these people were brother and sister, and the offer of a private onsen didn't go down too well with them.

Legs, If you are staying with HokkaidoTracks - they can arrange for your other gear that you don't need to be Black Catted to the Airport in Tokyo that you leave from.

We are using this service while we are touring Japan and not skiing. You then pick it up at the airport before you check in with Qantas or whoever you are travelling with.

Black cat will cost about $15 per bag and this is the way all Japanese travel, that is why they don't have anything with them.

When we arrive in Tokyo we are taking our bags straight to the Black Cat servie at the airport as we are staying in Tokyo for a few nights. It will be waiting for us either at our accommodation or with HokkaidoTracks.

See you there.

Whiteman

Be very wary of the baggage limits coming back!!!!

Make sure you get to the airport VERY early to check in and be in the queue! The Japanese staff at Qantas are not as helpful or lenient with weights and enforce the limit. Pack light for the return trip or they might hold your boarding pass as ransom.

No pay excess baggage = no boarding pass!

See you there. Thanks for the tip sjs, we are staying at Youtei tracks, so I'll email them. Will the gear get there in a day? On the way in, we are in Sapporo for a few days, so thought we'd forward gear that way, but I hadn't thought about the trip back.

might bump into your plaits over there.

Do it from the airport when you arrive otherwise you will be lugging luggage all around the place and the train people don't like that.

So if you arrive in Tokyo late one day and Black Cat from airport, it will be there, not the next day, but the next one, so we are in Tokyo for 2 nights and then travelling to Niseko, and the bags will be there then.

Japan is very reliable for this and the trains, they say you can set your watches by the trains arrival and depature.

I am at Deep Tracks and then at Freshwater.

Wow you guys take too much.

Ski gear-all of it including the warm stuff. Dont triplicate stuff.

The rest, one pair of shoes, heavy duty-I use hiking boots but JD has a point. Couple pairs of jeans, a few tops, couple warm jumpery things, undies/socks, some toiletries in travel sizes.

Credit card to buy what you need, including some warm fleeces etc that are also souvenirs . That is all.

Admit I have no kids, thats tougher but still pack light and use the laundry.

SA
17-02-2009, 12:58 PM
I agree. This last trip:

Non-skiing:
undies (enough for trip), jeans (worn every day), light puffy, 2 t/long-sleeve shirts, shorts for indoor, 2 pairs of non-skiing socks, Merrell mocs, toiletries, digicam, mobile, travel docs, chargers+power board.

Skiing:
skis, boots, poles, avy gear, helmet, shell pants/jacket, polyprop x2, mid/top layer thermals, skins, gloves, soft-shell, boot dryer.

I ovepacked with the soft-shell. Bought a full-zip fleece for 980yen :D

Fitted in a double roller ski bag (22kg, 6kg empty) and my daypack (7kg). Makes for easy transfers.

Next time around I aim to look for a lighter roller bag.

Just more socks. And a pair of cargos I wore on the plane.
Plus I just wash tees clothes etc every 4 days.

SA
17-02-2009, 01:26 PM
I could've left more socks at home, ended up wearing a pair of wool ski socks the whole trip - another pair, not the skiing ones.

Wash, what is this wash???

Donza
17-02-2009, 01:33 PM
Wash = my wife made me do it.

Seriously though I was at a lodge a few years ago when a group of four guys rocked up.
They had. Between 4.
4 ski bags
3 large wheelie (think big) suit cases
4 day-aeroplance day packs.

Then they proceed to lounge in their trackies and stinky thermals after skiing each day.
Too buggered to go out and enjoy their clothes.

SA
17-02-2009, 02:55 PM
I forgot - skins as well. They weight about 1.2kg by themselves.

I have packed most of the things in my list above (less a few items not required for this trip) into 3 bags:

Check-in Ski Bag: 1 x pair skis + 1 a set poles = 7kg
Check-in Bag: Boots, most clothes, shell jacket, gloves, helmet, goggles, toiletries etc. packed fairly tightly into a smallish duffle-type bag (that isn;t quite small enough to be a carry-on bag) = 12 kg
Carry-on Backpack: Docs, Wallet, Cards, Cameras, Chargers, Cables etc., some clothes = 4 kg

Total Check-in luggage = 19kg
Total Carry-on luggage = 4kg + worn clothes and fleece jumper.

JAL stipulates 20kg max total Check-in luggage, + 10kg max total carry-on luggage.

Sweet.

One thing I have not packed is my pocket (swiss army victorinox) knife, though I would like to - I know it could only go into Check-in luggage - what do you reckon'? Are they ok to take (in Check-in luggage)?
