Skier dies in NZ avalanche
August 14, 2009 - 4:54PM
One person has been killed and another has serious injuries after an avalanche in New Zealand's Southern Alps, police say.
Police said five skiers were caught in the avalanche at Totara Peak in the Methven area at 4.20pm local time (1420 AEST) on Friday.
Steve Schreiber, of the Mountain Safety Council, told Radio New Zealand the victim and the patient had been taken to Pudding Hill Station.
Schreiber said two helicopters and two ski parties were in the area on Friday afternoon, radio New Zealand reported on its website.
He said the avalanche risk was downgraded to considerable this week.
Two other people have been killed in avalanches on the South Island this winter, including Australian heli-skier Llynden Riethmuller, who was killed in the Southern Alps' Rugged Range on July 24.
