Hey Guys, just wanted to get some ideas on what you can do, and what type of equipment you can use to get your car out of the carpark after parking on mountain for an extended period of time.
ie. Shovels, good battery that has a high 'cold cranking amps' rating, placing some type of cover over the wheels to make it easier to remove buildup of snow??
Anything else that i am forgetting?
Thanks
How long are you planning on being up there?

That's what I was thinking. ;)

Yeah will be up for 1 month
What type of car?
And which mountain?
Don't worry about it, digging your car out is half the fun.
Just remember to take your shovel with you to your lodge, so many people leave them in the boot of the car....................
Good points Azz but I was thinking month on the hill probably doesn't want to eat out most nights so driving down the hill once a week for food supplies = car will be fine.
Providing it's not an old battler.

Best thing is to get in the front row of the car park so you can be towed out more easily...Shovel and a snatch strap (plus a passing by good samaritan 4WD owner) should handle most situations. Well that's how I get out of the Guthega overnight carpark.

Usual stuff. In gear, handbrake off. Wheel chocks. Windsreen wipers (plastic bag trick?). Folding BC shovel. Accessible towing points. Fresh ANTI FREEZE for alpine conditions. If diesel engine use alpine grade to prevent waxing. Run engine every other day if you can get to it. As with driving in mud etc by rocking steering gently from side to side you may increase grip of the wheel 'shoulder' when getting going with the chains on. If parking in extreme conditions cover the radiator intake also makes for faster warm up.

We pulled out a couple last year when we were driving past at Guthega! Not me. Last season I was the "puller", not the "pullee". Season before was a different matter though. smile.gif

And you can disconnect your battery for the period, just go down once a week and reconnect and start the car up.
Also don't park in nose first, park rear in.
If you have a diesel, fill up near the mountains so that you have winter diesel which does not freeze easily.
A bit of DW40 wiped onto the windscreen wipers at start of stay helps keep ice building up and cutting the rubber and easy removal of ice and snow on the rubber.

How does disconnecting the battery help?
Is it worth wd40 the wipers and than plastic bags over it as well, or just one of the two.
Also how do wheel chocks help? (is it to prevent ice buildup in that area of the wheel archs? without haveing to shovelling it out) or to keep the vehicle fixed without the hand brake on.

dont use wooded wheel chocks as they slip easily on snow and ice

Good point D-Dog. Nothing beats a well placed rock. Worth getting the battery checked - had mine done - they connect a gizmo that loads the thing to see what it can deliver. Start of the heavy frosts in Canberra is a reminder of the unseen things that count. Was minus 6 on the drive way this morning.
