FIS ALPINE COMPETITION EQUIPMENT RULES 2007 – 2008

There have been some changes made to the FIS Alpine Competition Equipment rules for the season 2007 – 2008.

Ordinarily, these changes would come into effect from 01 July 2007, but the ski manufacturers would not be able to produce the new compliant equipment and have it available for purchase now, in time for the Southern Hemisphere winter competition season.

SSA has made representation to the FIS to delay the implementation of the new 2007 – 2008 rules until 01 October 2007, after the end of our Southern Winter season.

We have received a confirmation from the FIS that this request will be granted and we will receive official notification after the FIS Conference in Portoroz, Slovenia from 23 to 27 May 2007.

Until that time, the current Competition Equipment rules are still applicable for our FIS competitions, FIS races and the ANC races.

Please note that there are no changes for Children’s Competition Equipment into the 2007 – 2008 season.

The important changes, due to take effect from 01 October 2007 are:

Minimum width of the running surface of the ski at the binding:

Currently: 60 millimetres for all skis:

From 01 October 2007: Downhill skis, Ladies and Men, 67 millimetres

Super G skis, Ladies and Men, 65 millimetres

Giant Slalom skis, Ladies and Men, 65 millimetres

Slalom skis, Ladies and Men, 63 millimetres

Note: All Rossignol Skis are wider than these minimums

Minimum radius measurement of the ski:

Currently: Downhill. Ladies and Men, 45 metres

Super G, Ladies and Men, 33 metres

Giant Slalom, Ladies and Men, 21 metres

Slalom, Ladies and Men, no minimum.

From 01 October 2007: Downhill. Ladies and Men, 45 metres, no change

Super G, Ladies and Men, 33 metres, no change

Giant Slalom, Men, 27 metres, changed

Giant Slalom, Ladies, 23 metres, changed.

Slalom, Ladies and Men, no minimum, no change.

Maximum height of ski plates:

Currently: All disciplines, Ladies and Men, 55 millimetres

From 01 October 2007: All disciplines, Ladies and Men, 50 millimetres

Maximum thickness of ski boot soles:

Currently: 45 millimetres

From 01 October 2007: 43 millimetres

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOUT EXISTING ROSSIGNOL STOCK ON ORDER

All Junior skis, Slalom up to 155cm and GS up to 175cm are OK for now and beyond October 2007
All Adult Slalom skis, 155 for women and 165 for men only have a plate height of 47mm and are OK for now and beyond October 2007
All Adult GS skis will be the wrong radius after October 2007
All Adult Ski boots for FIS racing will need to be ground down 2 mm or replaced after October 2007

If you have any queries regarding these rules, please contact me as soon as possible.

I have allowed the shipment of Slalom and junior skis on order to proceed. The availability of the new GS skis is small. If you need any race skis , please contact me as soon as possible. Demand will exceed supply. Please pass this information on to your staff and other racers please.

The change to the minimum radius for GS is interesting. As is the change of minimum widths across all the disciplines.

It sounds like there making it a little more complex. Are ski companies already making ski's to these specifications? (might be racing in FIS competions next year)

"It is 2007/08 (as from October 1st = Northern Hemisphere) for World and Continental Cup and 2008/09 for all other FIS levels.

Powderhound, many ski companies already make close to these specifications. I know with Fischer the 193cm GS ski already has a radius of 27m and underfoot it is 66mm, which is legal even under the new rule changes. (until you tune them for a season or two and then they may be narrower than 65mm.)

Currently there are two different things going around concerning when the rules actually take effect. The Skiing Australia website says everything comes into effect this year from October yet the Equipment director for FIS, who I have quoted above, says different. Im trying to find out for myself which one is completely accurate and as soon as i find out i will post it on here.

and i may be able to tell you a bit about the world of ski racing
