View Full Version : Picking up at the snowfields? Really?!
Having just read Miss SIA's blog about "Snow adultery" (or whatever the article was called), in all my years when I was at the snow as a singel guy (be it in Oz or overseas), I reckon my total encounters could be tallied on 1 hand with fingers to spare!! I must have been hanging out in the wrong bars or something because it was always a bl00dy sausage factory/dude stew no matter where I was. Then again I don't really recall actively looking to "pick-up" - I was more there to snowboard/hang out with my mates.
Is it all a myth or is the snow a great place to pick up? Perhaps I should have been an instructor? I guess there are more encounters between those who are there for the season as opposed to those down for the weekend?!
disclaimer: am happily married, but thought this would be an interesting conversation starter!!

oh I could make so many comments! tongue.gif
Hooking up for short term relationships seems to happen often, with the prospect of not having to stick it out for longer than a couple of months means by the time the honeymoon is over so is the relationship.
As for one nighters.. I don't think it happens as much as people make out, lots of flirting goes on but after a day on the hill and an evening in the pub sleep is more attractive.

Miss SIA lives in a world of her own...
Yep, the snow is a good pick up place if you have the goods, but the guys do outnumber girls in the snow big time. Even being 6'2" with eyes of blue and a trendy blond hairdo don't cut it at times...
Not that many single girls go to the snow either. The ones that are single are often with guys in a group so they miss out as it seems that they're taken. And even if they're not, one of the guys usually wants her anyway, and makes the job even harder...
Then there's often a lack of places where the deed can take place due to several others in the room. Not many girls like audiences...
Being there for the season does improve the odds greatly, especially for instructors, but it's generally a battle unless you're the hunkiest guy in the hills.

In Thredbo in Aug guys out number girls 5-1
My g/fs were all daughters of hoteliers and had their own apartments. Why would anyone bother going to a bar and then paying for drinks?

I must admit the article really threw me.
I have never had a huge amount of success... so totally thought it was over rated.
The talk about married guys was a bit weird - really?? Hoe many really get a pass out for a boys weekend to the snow?

I have a trendy blonde hair do. As in it's long and blonde. I get hit on constantly at the slopes - mostly by the lifties, and once by a very helpful "off duty Instructor" (yeah ok) who wanted to give me free lessons to improve my technique.
Oh oh oh and by a bloke just last weekend at Perisher Centre. I had just taken off my skis and was putting them up on teh fancy rail to go in for a hot choc when I got this line: So I am just wondering, once I ski down and take off my skis, how do I get back up to the lines?" Mr PB was less than thrilled and was glad to advise that the best way was to walk up, put your skis on and then you're on your way.
The fact that I ski all day with my partner does not seem to deter them.

LMAO great thread.
I would agree that it can happen but way to often its shared accomodation so unless its a spring special beside the lake when the temps start to rise then I would say the audience thing gets in the way.
Also I have noticed that most people go in groups, guys will always go in groups of guys but girls are much more likely to go in a group with guys/girls so the odds decrease as mentioned above due to the "im just a friend - but wont actually tell her how i feel so im not lettin any other guy near her" factor.

i've had some terrific encounters on snow trips and met some amazing people.
hey, its a social, energetic and physical activity, where you are always meeting new people in beautiful surroundings with high energy.
i think heading out to "pick-up" is trying to force something in life instead of just being open and allowing yourself to meet people naturally.
i say go with the flow and see what happens, but just remember someones gunna end up with a really cold bum.!!!!
I certainly never intended to "pick up" when I was down at the snow - it was more just meeting interesting and like-minded people. On those extremely rare occasions where I did "hook up" it kinda "just happened" on the night. No plans - just went with it.
I have met some amazing people during all my years of snowboarding - alot of the people I met on the ski slopes are lifelong friends :)
The wonderful people I have met and the experiences I have had on snow trips are things I could not put a price on :)
