same blurb as the NZ thread.
Seems (based on your collective advice)NZ not best option for us this year.
We will get one week this year so we want to be pretty sure of snow and pretty close to it!!
Our regular accom at Thredbo is booked out 19th - 26th July (and that's the only week we have). There are other options, but none as good for our needs (with three small kids and a massive desire for ease as it will be our only holiday this year).
The Stables at Perisher looks pretty good on line but I can't find any reviews. We want 4 star plus (again, an indulgence but our only one this year so hang it!). And it has to be that week (so if anyone wants to recommend somewhere very close to snow in Thredbo that I've missed that will fit the bill, please do!!).
Perisher lovers I need your help, as, apart from tubeland, I've never been to Perisher to stay or ski.
Don't want to drive the extra mile to vic this time around. Mr Legs is burnt out with 2009 already so less fuss is better!!!! (which is why I thought flying to NZ might work...but it won't so moving on...).
oh, and while I'm at it, and seeing as no-one seems to have put in any major requests yet, perhaps I could get in early and ask Mr Frog for a good dump the week before that, and a steady dusting all that week? smile.gif

I will be in Thredbo 10th-17th of August so the best snow will probably be then. smile.gif We are staying at Ski In Ski Out again as there isn't much choice when the family has to have 5 star. Only problem is they don't have ADSL/Broadband. A great thing last year at Frueaf at Falls was they have free wireless internet which is good when you run a site like this.
Never stayed at Perisher so can't help there....but still love my major sponsors none the less. smile.gif

tough one there. I'm at PB but we are members at a small lodge so I've never considered commercial accomodation. Perhaps some of the jindy locals have the good oil on whats good to stay at PB or smiggs.
The Stables does have a good reputation, as do some of the smaller commercial, boutique lodges. Not sure what the Moritz is like. I'd avoid The Man & The Matterhorn like the plaque -They dont sound like a legs family vacation based upon your other holiday descriptions - they'll be too barn like (and average).
PB certaintly doesn't have the village like atmosphere of thredbo - its just too spread out. Hence, it doesn't have the same nightlife feel (ie. lively compared to needing life support sometimes ;) ) I would suggest its a lot more low key than thredbo.
That said what it does have is a far amount of space to get away away from the punters (who don't know any better or cant handle T bars) It also has the prettiest little ski spot in nsw - guthega.
Again, there's my 2C - use, abuse or disregard as you see fit! smile.gif

Legs, I'm guessing you're requiring an apartment, which PB don't have many of. If not, there are a number of hotels that might suit you.
As far as apartments are concerned I think The Stables are by far the best. The ones at Smiggins are clean and comfortable, but basic. I have a feeling Salzberg was in the middle of renovations when I worked in reservations and did a tour of the accommodation up there. I really don't remember it.
Where do you usually stay at in Thredbo? This might give me a better idea of the type of place you're used to staying in.
Stay in Jindy then you can choose to drive to Threaders or the much superior PB depending on conditions. tongue.gif

Hey legolas , if you can get in , take it from me,
Smiggins hotel ( or the apartment ) go for the full meals ( they are brilliant with kids club etc complimentary , separate meal times and menu etc. Ski in ski out , park your car 20 metres from the front door , ski over the back very quickly to either the cow or Perisher , smiggs valley contains the littleuns in a defined and safe area .

hmmm, never stayed in a lodge, the kids are a little older now so might look at that...which then, of course opens up Charlottes as a destination...

Denman has smaller rooms but we do like dinner there. We need a 3-4 bedroom apartment that is pretty much on snow. We are actually staying at On The Snow which is run by Ski In Ski Out. It is next door and looks straight up the Supertrail so will be good for the inlaws minding the tadpoles.

Legs,
Lodge 21 is pretty basic but right there at smigs, or there is my place in jindy smile.gif
mmm, Ski in Ski out, I cleaned for them back in 02/03 and stayed there last spring, the best accom in Thredbo! But such a long stroll to the village and back (5min). It's so good to pop in for a cuppa and bite to eat at your accom then hit the slopes without having to deal with punters.

Thanks BB, but we've done our years of basic, and with the hours Mr Legs works, he deserves to spend a bit of cash on himself (and his wife and kids :D ).
The kids saw me googling earlier and there were many loud objections to leaving our beloved Thredbo (keep in mind here that we have never skiid anywhere else in Oz so the objections are baseless...and yet...I do love Thredbo)
Thinkin we might just have to go for that week earlier 12 - 19th and hope for snow (amazing what a difference a week makes!!!).

Charlottes is a horrible place, you would never want to go there, espeially with children - ski tube from Bullocks; horrible over snow from Perisher; small ski area where you can see your children from your lodge window; everything in walking distance and horrible ski-in/ski-out conditions (hey I want to waste money on Hans oversnow or wear out my boots); wierd friendly people without any steeze; huge lift ques; and only 4 lifts with very limted terrain. No, don't go to Charlottes, not an island in the snow, but a prison. smile.gif

I've stayed at the Stables, and it's pretty good. It has the only self-contained apartments in PB I think, and a great restaurant as well.
I've stayed at Peer Gynt too, and it's great. Not 5 star, but not many are I don't think. It's close to North P T and the Interceptor, and great for getting first tracks. Peer Gynt is kinda true ski in/ski out, whereas most PB lodges are ski out/oversnow in.
Illabunda is good if you know a member, and close to Sundeck.
The thing about PB lodges is the walking or oversnow, so maybe Smiggs would suit better.
And Charlottes is a good family option as well.
Hotham, on the other hand, has heaps of 5 star ski in/ski out apartments in Hotham Heights that are truly awesome and well worth the extra 3 hour trip. And the skiing totally craps all over anything at PB. Best skiing, and best apartments.
I just had to add Hotham Legs even though you said it's out, coz as you said, it's your only week...

Anybody with a plane and a pilot's licence can, and there are a couple of charter planes available out of Sydney, Bankstown or Albion Park but they're very dear.
Obviously you mean Qantas Pods?? They weren't last year, and I doubt that they will start again this season but ya never know....
They want bums on all seats but even that won't cut it sometimes - it's all about profit margins.

The Stables are OK, but the walk from the lifts is a pain in the rear end.
Polaris, how do you get to stay at Caralaika, or however it's spelled, that would be the best bet.

Stables are good, but with little kids that don't always last the day, it probably won't suit the Legs family being so far away from the lifts.

;) Absolutely yes to Muddles Lodge - checked this out last time I was there - very, very nice and affordable. BUT, if snow is bad, Interceptor chair won't open and then it's a hike in and out. That's why it is cheaper than other 4+ star places in the village. I wanted to stay there, but had two other families with us and they wanted to stay at Jindy, so we stayed with them, so I stopped in at Muddles to have a look for another time. Do NOT stay at Matterhorn - we did and it is very nbudget like - i won't go there again.

Yeah Bear, I do, but agree with SW that when it's not at its best, it $uck$ like any resorts do with all the good runs still closed.
It took me years to get one mate to go, and now he wants to go every year. Having said that, one mate went in '06 and hated it. But he wouldn't have seen its true potential.
Legs has one week, she wants on snow luxury, is on a budget and Mr Legs is fairly competent I gather. They'll enjoy it once they recover from the drive, and as long as it dumps early (please?)they will want to go back again too.
p.s too early in season to stay at Smigs - prolly won't be open if it doesn't snow. Could be too early for Muddles too. Interceptor doesn't open till snow levels are really good - it was closed when we went with 78cm, but that was 2006 - the bad year!

Yeh I've had the same experience, been twice now and snow was horrid both times. Done a total of 1/2 days skiing there in the end. Could see the terrain looked nice just was no point attempting to ski most of it.
Like anywhere in Australia I guess, its going to have its days. Just got to arrive at the right time!
I've been doing PB, or P, since 2000, every year up to 2006. 2006 was the only year that I wished I had saved my money for the lack of snow. Having said that, we always go mid to late August to almost guarantee snow base. This worked every year except 2006. Am in Whistler at present and it's crap snow for Whistler. So, snow conditions are a lottery anywhere - it's one of the inherent risks of the sport we love - sometimes the sport we love sooooo much, doesn't love us back!

Hi all and thanks again,
Okeydoke, I've well and truly tapped the friendships now.
Muddles came back with a dinner bed breaky package and I'm working on Mr Legs who has now dug his heels in and is insisting we just go the week earlier and stay at our favourite spot (it's Indi Chalet by the way, very pleasant and ridiculously handy...but of course, now that I've told you I'll have to kill you all). Between those two options I think we'll firgure it out.
Cheers

Personally, I'm not too sure Muddles is a great choice with littlies in tow. North P area is mainly blue runs and whilst Legs's kids have skied before, it wouldn't be a great location if the weather turns nasty or at the other end of the scale, the snow cover is marginal. Also a bit of a bother to get them to and from ski school, etc. Especially taking into consideration the stupidly convenient location they're used to! Does look nice though.

Oh I just realised I've got children too of similar ages. Maybe thats why they're so traumatised being dragged to the snow from Jindy every day. Followed by a swim at Jindy pool on the way home. Think I'll have to start saving for the therapy. Suppose there was no point in following the original suggestion with a tongue.gif as it obvioustly must not mean anything. tongue.gif

they just need to get the interceptor chair up in the morning, over to prety valley (easy peasey run down copperhead road) then back to the bottom of interceptor from bottom of pretty valley in the arvo and it's 50m past interceptor bottom station.
as for hiking in if there's no snow, the SI link says they have transport with or without snow

Podlet, if they have lessons (and I think the kids usually go into ski school) taking the chair, etc. won't get them to front valley in time, so they'd have to take the shuttle to the tube station in the mornings.
The place they prefer to stay at is about as close as you can get to the bottom on the gunbarrel chair and thredboland, so they're used to convenience. Given they have youngens who don't always last the day on the slopes, having somewhere with easy access is important.
Getting to North P is easy peasy for the likes of you and I, but a bit more difficult with 3 young children, though plenty do it and it doesn't bother them.

I have skied every resort in mainland Australia (except Buller) stacks of times. Thredbo is my place and apparently yours as well.
Do not go to PV/Smigs-you will hate it. It remains flat and you will grow one longer leg. Nice lunches at the Pub at Guthega!!
PV is a day trip from Thredbo maybe even two day trips. It is not a place you stay for a week.
Hotham is your next best option, unfortunately the "village" ****s-spread out over about 1 km of main road. But the shuttle works and the skiing is mostly awesome (too many lifts to get anywhere, bit to much skating from the extreme zone, any boarder in your party will be once a day max to that bit). However these are the extent of my criticism, the actual terrain and accom standard is awesome.
Falls Creek may work, if youve never ever been there it's OK. If you have then please ignore me. Not a do twice place.

TB, yup, thinking I'd better go with gut instinct and stay with our safe little world we love.
Mr Legs pointed out (rightly, but don't tell him that) that the first week of July hols this year (12th-19th)is the same date as the second week of last years school hols when we were in lovely dumpy fluffy snow at Thredbo.
Swede's reports and the thoughts of many have got me interested in Perisher though, so might try and convince them to do a day trip out...either that, or look forward to a girls trip to muddles with SW, Pods, BB and Bear.
Thanks again all.

Hi Legs
I was gonna tell you about Dinner Plain but I guess I'll keep it to myself.
Nah, I'll tell you anyway. We found it unreal with our 2 little ones and used the shuttle bus up and back every day no problems very reliable, up there when it opens for lifts every morning, super friendly staff and locals everywhere you go, awesome accom as most is newish (2-3 years old)no noisy neighbours as most is seperate chalets.Drive and park your car in the garage so it's there if you need it (we hired a car as we thought we would need it but hardly used it).
Not much there in the way of night life but that's not what we go away as a family for anyway.
We have been to Thredbo and Perisher several times in the last few years (usually a week at each)in the past and have no massive complaints they all have their pro's and con's but I think we will be honourary Victorians again this season we just found it very welcoming.
