Any brands I should look out for. Have a small camera bag about the size of a normal day pack and it has a spot for the tripod on the back but it looks awfully small.

Manfrotto smile.gif May as well start at the top!

My only advice is to avoid flimsy tripods as you'll get camera shake.

Actually, that's not my only advice! Take your camera along when looking so you can stick it on the mount and test the sturdiness of the tripod

Camera site (http://www.d-d-photographics.com/) check these guys out (they ship australia wide but have pick up points in Sydney and Brisneyland) they have very good pricing. I just got mine from them.

that said what kind of camera do u have???
As Pod's said i strongly recommend Manfotto i have one and pretty much anyone whos seriously into photography does. theyre pretty sturdy and all parts are replacable if something wears out. I've been told not to get a giottos cause they dont compare.
you want to make sure your tripod can support the weight of you camera and any telephoto lens you wish to attach to it. And like Pod's said u dont want a flimsy one that will blow about in the slightest of winds.
also if you dont have one already u may want to invest in a remote for the camera to get those nice long exposure shots with out having to set the timer on the camera every time

Also if ur tall like me u want a tripod that your not gonna have to bend down to look through your camera all the time ;)

Yes thanks. Yeah I want a good one. I have a gift voucher for Photo Continental up here so am going to head over this afternoon.

I have a Nikon D80. And I do not want a flimsy one. My old broke where the extension from the tripod part extends up to give u extra height and the parts cannot be replaced.

its like anything camera wise these days u need to spend a bit of money to get the good gear. Go the manfrotto

i got the 190X pro with the trigger grip head on it. Expect to pay around the $300 mark but they're solid as a rock. and actually pretty light too

If you've got a cheapie tripod, make sure you pack a shopping bag with you - fill it with sand, dirt, water whatever to give extra stability when shooting.

i have a $39 inca cheapie.. its awesome!!! (cost me $10 with staff discount!)

light weight (compared to the manfrotos which weigh a ton) and great for backpacking.

eye height for me (but hey im short!)

and if i need more space when im overseas i can throw it out and buy a new one when i get home!

love it!

the huge benefit of the manfrotto's is their replaceable parts, you don't have to throw the whole thing out and buy a new one if something breaks (which contributes to global warming etc etc) you just buy the bit you need. Having said that, dad's had one for 30 years, it's metal, and a newer super light one for about 10 years. different mounts, could have just bought a different head, but he splurged and got new legs as well

I ended up getting the MF190 XDB and the 804RC2 head.

Initially after looking at all the tripods I went up to the salesperson, pointed to one and said I like that one - how much? $660. It was the 190cxpro3.

Ouch. On a budget and it looks like an all round good tripod. With the possibility of a compact camera and either a zoom or widescreen lense for the D80 on the cards I needed to be careful of my spend. Hopefully I made the right choice.

Something to consider (if anyone else is looking), if your going to use it with a video camera then you'll want a nice fluid head for panning. I really like Manfrotto - best for the price.

The RC2 looks like it is suitable for video too.
