I have a Nikon D80. The lenses might have to wait due to costs and I am thinking I might have a chance to convince the other half on a flash unit as I have heard they can be good for improving low light scenic shots and making the lighting 'softer'? WHat should I be looking for?

the flash is only good for a certain distance, so people, and things in the foreground. it's not good for scenic things which are more than a metre or 2 away from the camera - each flash has a different distance it will throw light
