View Full Version : Snowboarder fined

Vet

A boarder and his mates were allegedly racing down Lt Buller Spur towards the kiosk, and allegedly 'took out' an 8 year old. Hip and leg problems ensued. Apparently Ski Patrol saw it, cancelled tickets, recorded 2 strikes against a boarder's season pass, and issued an on-the-spot fine.

This the first I've heard of on-the-spot fines.

Anyone heard of on the spot fines before?

On the spot fine? What sort of fine? enforced by ski patrol or the police?

Glad to see Ski Patrol taking some action (provided the snowboarders DID actually take out the kid).

re: the fines, I do wonder if they can be enforced?

The 8 year old's dad says the Ski Patrol told him they fined the boarder on-the-spot, and ripped up tickets and issued a season pass holder with a 2nd 'strike'. (I think 3 strikes means the season pass is revoked). I'll have a chat to some Patrollers on Saturday night.

Probably got fined just for being a boarder!

Thats why I ski about 1-2 meters uphill of my 7YO. So the ****heads have to go through me before they ruin my kids hips etc...

i have an 8yo and 5 yo and i worry about hoons running them down on the slopes so your idea is worth trying

Lucky for them the kids dad didn't catch them. Us fathers tend to throw punches (and stomp with hard ski boots) if you take out one of our offspring for being an idiot.

I'm a boarder and I do my best at staying out of everyone's way. I got cleaned up by another boarder while bent over unclipping to get ready to board the lift.... unfortunately for him I'm a 6"1' 105KG

Good on the ski patrol.

This is our common practice also, only 1-2 meters is hardly enough 2-10 is a better buffer (depending on the slope) , I don't want me and the hoon tangled up running down my 5yo. If two of us are sliding with her one goes in front to show her the better line down the hill, this way we are able to take her on blue and easier black runs.

Spaz is pp on black runs..... Add that to the list of things I hate about kids at the snow
1) They're better than me
2) They're flexible when they stack
3) They don't get hurt when the stack
4) They're better than me

he hehe

Most humiliating moment of my life when my +1 said I don't know what all the fuss is, even the 5 year olds can do it - pointing to the Milo kids...

oh well we have to start somewhere....

last post uploaded accidently....

Got run over by snowboarder and he was full of attitude until he realised i was 6"1' 105kg ex rugby front rower..... When I stodd up again (slighty annoyed) he nearly wet his pants he he he.... just happened to be a ski patrol guy who saw it and clipped his ticket as well. That was at thredbo

Easy blacks TP, I have a video to upload from yesterday, I knew they where up for a challenge but had to carry PP down the last section, +1 needed guidance - she did it, not with grace but it made me proud.

Yer good on Ski patrol

Although my lil sister got herself in a pickle a few years ago, she went to the snow and was her 1st time she was about 17 or so, and was riding a toboggan and accidently took out a whole heap of blind people who were all attached by rope, she felt so bad I still give her **** about it now calling her a bully, luckily though it was at low speeds and was not by any means was she going fast.

Hoots, you can't do that. Seriously, there are cameras and witnesses.

When one guy was heading on a trail straight at Lil Vet, I got between them. I think the guy was truly apologetic when he realised he was on the side of the narrow trail which runs along a ridge.

I had a young lass on skis run into me today, she was in the wrong and came off much worse than me. I stopped and help get all her gear back, it was a classic yardsale. :D

We take Little E and Gnomes out (both 6) and we have four parents running block for them, one downhill and three above.

It gets scary with the grommets out when its busy.

I reckon the on-the-spot fines are a bit tight.
Everyone's out to have fun and i can almost guarantee no one is out to take out anyone else so this would truly be an accident.
A warning and strike against passes is fine but anything more is a bit harsh...

The only time I've been wiped out was by a skier and I'm a skier too. it can happen to anyone regardless of their choice of footwear

A warning and strike against passes is fine but anything more is a bit harsh... Hooning before an 'accident' is reckless conduct that can result in criminal charges. Then a civil suit seeks damages and the hoon will have a deafult judgement that will prevent him getting any car or home loans. If his folks leave him assets, the asset will be garnisheed. If e gets a job, his wages will be garnisheed. In the matter of the 8 year old kid's case, his grandpa and aunt are at the two larger no win no fee firms. They might have their own ideas on what's fun.

I disagree golfpunk, i think there is fun then there is being irresponsible, this case to me is clearly irresponsible, they'd been pulled up by ski patrol before, at least the season pass holder had.

I wonder if they even care about what they have done and what they could do by behaving recklessly on the slopes?

Google the US Ski patrol show and watch some of the idiocy they deal with, it's the same here, just smaller mountains

At Heavenly, the ski patrollers are deputized by the Sherriff and have boards showing the number of cancelled passes over the season, that week, and that day. There were also skiing cops and guys in black that might've had those American police badges on their chest. It also has a reputation with a demographic group as the place to avoid. Also the Durango County Sherriff brought a sniffer dog to the lift line. It seems to work. I was never 'waved at' despite respectable speed (and giving a really wide berth) and Mrs Vet and Lil Vet felt safe so its 'our mountain' for family trips. Meantime Mrs Vet has basically given up on Buller and Lil Vet might only ski 7 days a year in Australia.

Yeah we were fairly motoring at Heavenly, those big wide runs with barely any people around was great. Yet we were all 100m behind my mate who was going warp speed  disclaimer - he has worked there for 16 years, is a top level boarder and was actually going slow for us as he had his soft boots on, not hard boots graemlins/big_laugh.gif

Honestly, i have never heard of anything saying that straighlining/speeding/hooning down slopes will get you fined.
So the fines are a bit of a surprise to me. The last time i checked, there were SLOW signs at the kiosk so its obviously stupid to hoon around the slow signed area.

pretty sure it is all the snowboarders fault. all of them.

damn straight! tongue.gif

look its also in context.

if you are clearly in control with good technique the ski patrollers are often less inclined to slow you down...plus good riders should know how fast/slow they should be going considering the amount of beginners around anyway....if you are cleaarly being a nutter and going too fast for your tehcnique/conditions, then its prett dumb. fine away i reckon

can anyone elaborate on how the fines are enforced?

Richard

The State Government needs to immediately start (vigourous pushed through parliament), an Anti-Snowboarding Hoon Legislation.

1st Offence : Immediate snowboard confiscation and impoundment:

2nd Offence : Make them wear a belts

3rd Offence : Send them into drug rehab.

4th Offence : COMPULSORY FOR THE FOLLOWING. Banned from Snowboarding for ever, plastic surgery to knuckles, confiscation of any "cool" music (or talking about it), skiing lessons......

Ski Patrol have no authority to issue fines, best they can do is inform the on mountain police.

They can cancel ski passes obviously but they are not a law upon themselves.

People that ski/ride recklessly should be clipped/fined and made to take a safety class (like auto drivers have to) on my only day @ Northstar@Tahoe 4 idiots (all skiers believe it or not) camme within inches of me @ high speed I followed *****ed 'em out loud enuf for the entire Mtn to here and threatened a beat down if it happened again ...it didn't happen again an the father of the 8 yr old should thrown a beat down on the perp ( not a crippler just a lesson).. Here in the states there is no way he would have been convicted had it ever made it to court

That's why I try'n avoid heavenly !! the only dogs that should be anywhere on the slopes are rescue dogs not the I'm going to ruin your day dogs... but it is a family mountain w/ mostly cruisers (the runs and the patrons) so it's ok,
