just got a crack in the screen on my current Nokia 6300 and the lcd is starting to pixelate (sp)

been very happy with the 6300, seems a reasonable phone and don't really need a phone with all the bells and whistles

have been considering the iphone, but don't really need it and don't want to spend the extra $$$ on data downloads, but would save me carrying around ipod and phone

what suggestions of models of phones peoples

Cheers

i scored a blackberry through work last year and would have to say i'd be lost without it these days but if you don't need net access and emails it would be a waste of time.

dilbert, I had my blackberry without data for a month over here, it was hard! So I moved and got a data plan, much better now ;) The newer BB's coming out will compete with google and will be even better in the next few months!

hoots, you are not a luddite, you obviously just don't have one!

I do have one and I could list the things it does, but I'm busy.

Mr Legs and I are both cynced to the same computer and for scheduling, lists, internet access, music, the lot! I find I actually use many options on here and there are so many more to learn about if I just had the time. Even kids games (which I've never gone to before).

But at the end of all that, it is a very sexy phone to have smile.gif . Just picking it up makes me smile.

I have a blackberry I scoreed from work as well & I ruddy hate it.
Apart from being on call all the time for work (I haven't mentioned recently how much I dislike my job), the thing breaks down, I have to remove the batters 2 turn it on, the roller keeps stuffing up....
get an i phone I say

Legs, I know you can do all of those things with an "I" thingy. I can already sync my phone and connect to the net and listen to music and take pics and..... christ, the thing even makes phone calls!!! I've just choosen to try to be a bit less 'structured' about my life these days.

By way of explaination I work with technology daily so I dont feel the need to be connected to it or live my life through it 24X7 like lots of people seem to do. Whether that's I things or facebook or whatever. A few forums is enough for me in dealing with the 'cyber' content of life. I dont feel compelled to know when an email arrives. I dont feel compelled to have a zillion details of people at my fingertips and I dont feel compelled to have a mini computer at my fingertips that will tell me the news, the shareprice or my horoscope. :D

The day any organisation I work for gives me crackberry will be the day I quit! I just dont want or need to be connected 24x7. Thats just such a depressing thought (in my mind anyway) :(

So sure, yes, the I gadget does a lot. Its just not for me as I have choosen to recognise I dont use (or want to use) lots of the features it has. smile.gif

The best things about the iphone are; that it works-unlike many others, It's super easy to use-my 5yo has mastered the navigation and can call mum then there's the Apps, oh the Apps... believe me there is something for everyone and many yet to be thought up.
Example: I can pull up any ski resorts trail map in the world and get a full report with a single tap on the screen, including Oz.
ATM my favorite is my surf log which checks the conditions and cross references it with the data I've put in (breaks/boards/sessions) then tells me where, which board to ride and at what time!

The down side is no Java support and the battery (it's not unusable).
Speak to any iphone user. And believe the hype.

there aren't any iphone plans without data are there?

spaz
12-02-2009, 10:16 AM
Why do you have to buy it on a plan? There are that may out there that you could get it 2nd hand, use some other sim card and PAYG.

Caboose
12-02-2009, 10:46 AM
nah

i mean you have the phone call plan & a data download plan

so like you have $60 phone cap and then you also have a $20 data download plan of 50MB or something

so total monthly cost is $80

also i don't think you can buy one outright "new" for under $850 - also locked to the mobile service provier

JA2340
12-02-2009, 09:18 PM
so ... buy a used one (or new unlocked one) on eBay and use an existing SIM. No locks (if you are smart) and pay as you go. No plan, no contract. I have 3 mobiles, use whichever I need for the current situation (ie a nextG with 2100Hz for Japan, a plain simple one for everyday and one with vid and data for other stuff) and swap the SIM between them.

spaz
13-02-2009, 12:19 AM
check you pricing Caboose, my 12month plan costs me a bit over $80 a month; that includes the cost of the phone and 120MB.

JA2340 has made a good suggestion.

I  Sony Ericsson and Blackberry.

Sony Ericsson you can get W phones up to 8g for the music and cause it is sony the music player is awesome.

My last Sony Ericson had 4g and i had that for 2 years.... i could get email and internet access as well - so in essence i had an iphone waayyyy before it ever came out.

I won a blackberry so that is what i am using - will go back to Sony tho probably.

And the positive to carrying only one piece (ie no ipod) is that your phone is insured an ipod is not...

You know what else is funny - people thought i was crazy having a phone and a player in one and then all those people jumped on the iphone band wangon LOL...

I have never owned an ipod ever... I went from a Minidisc player to the sony ericsson phone the first phone's memory was quiet small but no less than a mini disc but the 4g was a dream...

JA2340 has made a good suggestion. figures were made up on the spot, they weren't from a plan, but prob similar to something telstra would offer so you get reemed ;)

not really affordable, getting phone on a capped plan i'm already on seems more reasonable - yes i know call costs are higher

not really

paying $45 bucks a month atm

trying to find a plan around that price range with a minimal data package

0 dollars for the phone for 24months etc blah blah

(and yes i know the cost of the phone is included in the call costs etc, but that is the same for all of capped plans)

Voda - $49 plan, 24 months with Samsung F480v (full touch screen, mp3 player, etc etc).

i just chose the LG viewty over the Samsung F480 due to the phone forum reviews.

you cant forward TXT or MSM on an iphone..
did you know that..?

or, should i say..a fella i work with (who wont let me play with his iphone) cant forward those messages. and he has had it for a couple of months now..

How much longer do you think MSM and TXT will be around once everyone can use full net features on their phones.
The days of having a mobile "phone" are over. It's a mobile device, which is really a pocket computer.

The iphone is awesome! I wont go back to a conventional mobile

As for data usage you'll need/use it. Have a look at virgin $70 a month $500 on call and 1g of data and not payments for the phone. As for reported reception and associated issues i've had non and have had my iphone sine they went on sale with virgin. I went with them after a less than satisfactory vodafone experience ( I was a voda customer for years).

I have to agree the days of a "mobile phone" "mms and txt" are numbered the future is a mobile device such as the iphone
